Whisper getting around possible points system next season and 6 games to qualify for finals, if so some teams might have 17 local players in the senior side , x afl 6 points , vfl 5 points gvl 4 points will not tack much to get to 46 points with every local worth 1 point. Anyone else heard the whisper ??

YVMDFL do it and it works pretty well, not sure the numbers / ratios are the same but system is okay. Actually spreads the "elite" imports more

Points systems do not work
I sort of agree, it may work for leagues with larger town populations but what if a town doesn't have many local kids wanting to play footy to bring through as your local product. Our primary school 2 years ago had 130 kids at the school and this year have 35 with a larger number being girls. We get a lot of our thirds from mostly Euroa and in the past Benalla, so coming from GV and not a local what points do they incur if they play seniors. The populations are not very big in any of the towns and we all rely on GV to a certain extent so will make it very hard. If the league can find a way that it works successfully then a trial might be ok but I don't it will

If anyone wants to find out if it works or not go and ask some clubs up home in the Central Murray league where there is evidence to show that I doesn't work. The gap between the best and the worst is bigger than ever and the town clubs ie: Kerang and swan hill ( the only major towns in the league) will always be at an advantage versus the samller town clubs. The other point is that poins systems work in the a favour of clubs with big bank rolls in that they can pay whaler they like to draw blokes from further way to avoid points loadings

BANG! Spot on Roota. Clubs with money will still spend. But will look to Picola, Heathcote or Murray before GVL to recruit players. Undera raised this idea, I think it's notable that they helped start the arms race in this league and now they want it stopped??! Anywho...
This would be the death of Longwood for sure. If they can't pull in multiple GVL players and need to rely on locals then where to from here?

There are many ways that a points system can be constructed to suit local circumstances. For example: junior age players coming from a major league to plays seniors can be allocated a lower point score, an AFL or VFL or other major league player can be discounted for each year they play at the same team, senior players over 30, 35 or even 40 years of age could be discounted accordingly. The key is to analyse the data surrounding player movements in the league over the past three or so years (all available online) and to trial a system that best serves the longevity of the league. I'm not sure that Undera really started the "arms race", there have been plenty of big names and egos (and waists) drift in and out over the past twenty years.

I agree that some measure should be put in place to even out the comp, but I tend to agree that a points system in the KDFL wouldn't work... Simply because the KDFL is recognised as one of the worst leagues in Country Vic (according to VCFL rankings).. So basically, every recruit that is not a local will be coming from a 'higher ranked league' and will incur maximum points, even if they're average players?

Does it need to be evened out, though..? Any of the top 5 this year are not without a chance of winning it, nearly every team (barring longwood) have played finals in the last 5yrs & a side hasn't won 3 flags in a row for ages (like they have in GV, bendigo FL, Murray fl & O&M..). In fact, stanhope's been the most dominant side in regards to their consistency in making finals & they've hardly done it on spending heaps of cash.. Like I said in an earlier post, yes, VT have the 3-ex AFL blokes, but it's not like they're completely dominating the comp. They may not even win it this year.. In terms of evenness, and the fact there's 13 sides in the comp, I'd say the KDL is going along quite well compared to other leagues across the state. I'm not sure a points system is the way to go, at the very least it'd make more sense if the entire state were all made to adhere to it.

gave your mob a smacking.

Might have to challenge you on that statement TP, I am pretty sure that Stanhope come into the league in 1995? Since then they have only missed 4 finals series, the same as Lancaster in that period. Accept that Stanhope has won more flags, but purely on consistency in making finals no difference.

Is it just me or do Lancaster people always get like this when they feel like they are being disrespected? It's ok Winter Rd is still the centre of the universe.. Try not to steer the debate to a dead end.. Carry on.

Swoopin Pie. That quip wasn't for you, bad timing just to clarify.. Yes the Bats are a danger game for the Elim final. But as for the flag, Simply no. The only side I think who can win the big dance from outside the top 2 is VT. It's a rough ride to the GF from 3-6!

Sorry big fella, I wasn't purposely denigrating Lancy; you're right, they pumped the Tigers. I was more arguing that the relative evenness of the top 5 (happy to say 6), justifies NOT needing a points system..

The statement was actually in regards to the points system; what's your stance on it..?

Yeh, another good point. Again, wasn't purposely dissing Lancy in any way, but your consistency should be recognised. My point is that there isn't a side continually winning flags in the kdl. I'd say it's been reasonably well spread out.. Agree..? And thoughts in the points system..?

Got to agree with you Trevor... There has been no one team constantly winning flags, or playing in grand finals for that matter, to suggest the KDFL needs a points system. Do agree with didak that its a bit rich for undera to lead the charge for the points system now that they have well and truly fallen back with the pack. If you've got the cash, spend it as you like coz we all know the ups and downs of football clubs, and personally I don't think a points system will change any of that...

I must have misunderstood something. I thought investigating a points system was about finding a way to keeps clubs and leagues sustainable in the future. ALL of our clubs are community assets and no community in this state can afford to lose another club. If a points system helps clubs to manage money better for the long term why not have a look at it. This talk about about evening up competitions is disingenuous, it can't happen and would be counter-productive. How many clubs are part of the KDFL that weren't twenty years ago? Why are they there? Will they be there in five or ten years time. Do you put together contingencies now or wait for clubs to fall over? Do we learn from the demise of other sporting clubs in our communities and make something happen or just hope that nothing changes?

Woody. I hear where you're coming from. My club was on the mat only 2 years ago. However, I believe that clubs are responsible for their own fortunes, I think it's very mediocre to look at a points system for a Senior Football League of adult men. Why would we now look at potentially restricting the standard of football? The league right now is as interesting and competitive as I can remember. Not just the top 6 either, Tallygaroopna are a side that have won 3 games and have been close to some big scalps. Avenel and Rushworth can cause headaches on their day also.

Seriously if your club is struggling, you have work to do. No other clubs gain success easily. If there aren't enough people willing to stand up and make the place competitive then does the community really value that particular club? The clubs on top are generally there because their club is run better than yours (at the moment).. I know plenty about life at the bottom of the ladder so thats my references.. Sorry pal I live in the real world, the harsh one..

Points system is an interesting one. A lot of conflicting feedback from the leagues where it currently operates. Might be worth a trial, but you would think that it would need to be looked at in all of our local leagues to get a fair assessment. If it did nothing else other than encourage clubs to focus more on junior development then it might be a good thing.

Logistically, I don't like the idea of having two finals on the same day, because it splits the crowds attending and it leads to situations where you can have one team from a club playing at one venue and the other playing at another (I know that this can be fixed, but it's unnecessary).

I think what we have for a final 6 is right, but they really need to swap the elimination final at Lancaster with the qualifying final at Undera
O&K have a final 8 and play same as AFL, first week 2 qual finals on sat and 2 elim finals on sunday. second week 1st semi on sat and 2nd semi on sun, third week prelim 1 on sat and prelim 2 on sun....I am sure that works well.
