We had 34,000 against the Adeliade Crows on Mother's day at Colonial Stadium last year.

it just makes Collingwood's crowds look all the more inferior to Essendon.

Not that the Pies get bad crowds. Far from it. They're just not in Essendon's class. No one is.

Dan when you talk about Essendon keep your hands above the table please..............

jlcapa...I`m still waiting for your 80,000 three weeks in a row call....and an explanation for 34,000 v north, where as ess had 34,000 v w.c.e at the same venue, speak to me brudda.

Firstly u definately aint no brotha............quite simply the game against Carlton should not have been pre sold. But i guess there is no excuse for the poor crowd. How many more people did Essendon draw for their match against Carlton ?? How many more people did Essendon draw against Richmond ?? You are the reigning premiers if you cant beat our crowds then you never will.
Well Kangaroos may as well be an interstate crowd as at most they had maybe 5,000 supporters at that game. Once again no excuses it was a poor turnout on Motherday. I guess the Collingwood people wanted to spend the day with their mothers.

Now explain the Essendon v Melbourne crowd today. A replay of last years Grand Final and the only game in Melbourne today. The weather wasnt too bad either. Yet you couldnt even break 50,000. According to Dan Essendon can draw 50,000 by themselves ??

Past crowds indicate that we can draw 55,000 by ourselves IF we are playing another top-of-the-ladder team. We're not going to have 55,000 Bomber fans against "middle of the road" Melbourne, or "bottom of the ladder" West Coast.

When we played the top of the ladder Swans in 1996, for example, we got 69,000 (55,000 Bomber fans)

Last year against Melbourne in Round 9 we got 62,000. Melbourne were travelling far better than they were this year. We have proven we can get over 60,000 against Melbourne given the right circumstances We did last year, or have you conveniently forgotten that?

I personally predicted 54,000 today, and was wrong by 6,500. I didn't expect a massive crowd, because it wasn't a big match. Next week's match is a HUGE match, with both teams having won a combined 15 out of 16. That is simply huge.

Remember JLC – you must treat each match on its merits. Different matches have different circumstances. Since 1994, we have drawn over 60,000 against Melbourne on 3 separate occasions. We didn't get that today, because it wasn't a big match. It might have been the GF re-match, but that doesn't make it a big match at all. It's a different year for a start.

Essendon and Collingwood met in the GF re-match in 1991 at Waverley and drew only 41,000, because both teams were struggling. Just because it is the GF re-match does NOT make it a big match. No way. You have to treat each match on its merits.

Shut up dickhead. What would you know?

South Melbourne always had a small following. Always. Given that they are now based in Sydney, their Melbourne support certainly hasn't increased over the last 20 years. There would have been 55,000 Bomber fans easily that day, in the crowd of 70,000. I was there, and I can tell you it was sea of red and black. The Swans had their fans, but it wouldn't have been more than about 14-15,000. That's still quite a bit remember. The Swans don't have a big following.

i know much more about football than you will dickhead..You are loser...I bet you were the neird in school everyone picked on...hahaha.....Sydney do have support here....Get real Dan...Essendon isnt the only club in melbourne

Mr Ripper did you on 3aw on the weekend that only 9,000 hawthorn members turn up every week...I dont need a little stat book to defend myself...There is no way ess vs haw this week would draw 70,000...Argument over now..

You're a mischievous little imp, Michael. If you'd listened to that interview a fraction more carefully, you would have heard Demetriou admit that this figure was for adult members only. Ian Dicker disputes those figures too.

And anyway, whoever suggested only members were entitled to go to the football?

Now, let's look at it this way: When playing against a poor-performing interstate club (WCE), Essendon drew 34,000 (conservatively 30,000 of their own supporters); Hawthorn got 23,000 (say 20,000 Hawk fans). Add those totals together and you already have Colonial's capacity of 50,000. Add in a near-full capacity AFL members' section, a healthy smattering of MCC members and various other supporters who want to see the top two sides shape up and you are looking at 75,000+.

Just looking down the track a bit, and if both Collingwood and Hawthorn maintain their form; the attendance at their MCG clash in round 16 could give a very good guide to what this Essendon v Hawthorn match might have drawn if transferred.
