As you are no doubt aware West Coast does not have a first round pick this year after a last minute trade during the 2017 trade period.
This trade consisted of us giving up pick 50 (Brayden Crossley) and our 2018 first round pick for the following:
2017 Pick 21 - Oscar Allen
2017 Pick 26 - Liam Ryan; and
2017 Pick 37 - Jack Petruccelle; and
2018 - GC Round 2 selection.
This trade is possibly the first future trade that actively made either team heavily invested in the fortunes of the other in subsequent years.
Had West Coast dropped down the ladder (as expected by "experts") the trade would've been pretty even.
Had West Coast done extremely poorly (as tipped by one R Walls) Gold Coast were likely to be the clear winners.
The reality is that West Coast have far exceeded everyone's expectations whereas Gold Coast had another very disappointing season (bar the first three rounds).
As it currently stands the above trade means that West Coast have conceded pick 18 of this year and Crossley in exchange for pick 20 of this year and Allen, Ryan and Petruccelle. Obviously, the jury is out on these players (except Ryan). I also acknowledge that additional compensation picks may amend the current order. However, in light of our success this year we have made off like bandits with this trade and I'm struggling to think of a more lopsided and reckless trade on the part of Gold Coast (perhaps in Fremantle's earlier years?).
Needless to say this trade is reflective of a prevalent perspective from within the club as to our chances for success this year. Collectively the entirety of the West Coast staffing had bought into the expectation for success prior to this season starting. So I want to thank all those who work at the club. But I particularly want to thank the Gold Coast Football Club. Either for their blatant ignorance regarding our chances of success this year, or, more likely, for their lack of care and due diligence when it came to the 2017 trading period. This disparity between how we rated ourselves internally and how others rated us from outside the club is quite stark. Yet the club's position was validated in a Grand Final win yesterday. I am thankful that they kept the faith.
