who do you reckon is the best and who will be the best?
personally I think it will go Ablett then Kelly then Bartel, because of the big step forward that ablett took this year I would say he is looking the goods!. Also I think Bartel has been starved of opportunites a bit, he has played well in every game he has played I think but then we drop him...why?

At the moment, Kelly is slightly ahead of Ablett and then Bartel, but Ablett has the potential to be one of the best players in the competition if he stays injury free throughout his career.

Kelly and Bartel will hopefully develop into quality midfield players for the Cats for many years. I would expect Kelly to have a more attacking role then Bartel, mainly because he has greater pace. I can see Bartel becomming a Greg Williams type player for Geelong... not great pace but knows how to use the ball and has good disposal.

Interesting topic, Falconer02. :)

At the moment I'd have Ablett slightly ahead of Kelly, but that's only because Ablett got more ground time this year, where as in 2002 it was the other way around.

Bartel could become a Buddha Hocking/Robert Harvey type player. He's not blessed with pace, but his skills are pretty good.

If it rained for all 22 games next year,Bartel would be a fair chance for the Brownlow. He seems to play his best footy in the wet.

Ablett is better than Kelly. His attitude is the difference between them.

If James Kelly focused more on the ball, and less on the pink bits, he'd be as good or better than Gary.

Bartel ain't in their class, grossly overrated.

Ablett only just ahead of Kelly. I would suggest Bartel is a mile behind and would put Steve Johnson ahead of him in third place, with Bartel fourth.

Ablett is considerably ahead of Kelly at this stage IMO, and I think may have even surprised Geelong fans with his progress following 2002. Bartel further back again. Kelly will be the best, may be a case of 2nd year blues, but he will be your prime midfielder in the not to distant future.

And just to extend the discussion a bit more...

Cameron Ling would obviously be our best midfielder, but where do Joel Corey, Paul Chapman, David Spriggs and Corey Enright rate with everyone compared to Kelly, Ablett and Bartel?? In other words, what is everyone's pecking order of our midfield players??

There are 3 distinct groups.

Group 1: Ling is obviously way ahead of everyone else at this stage, consistantly getting a lot of the footy.

Group 2: Three "erratics" (Corey, Enright, Kelly). Can get a lot of the footy and stamp themselves on a game but can also go missing, or in Kelly's case sit on the bench. Two "dependables" (Ablett, Chapman). Never get a heap of the footy, mainly because of spending time up forward, but when they get it they make it count and slot a few goals.

Group 3: I was thinking about making it 4 groups but maybe that is a little harsh on Spriggs. Both will battle for game time in the seniors, it seems to me Spriggs is the one player that is very disposable.

I'd also put Moloney in the second group, although probably only deserves to be with Bartel and Spriggs, I rate him very highly.

Ling
Chappy
Ablett
Kelly
Corey
Bartel
Moloney
Spriggs

I haven't included the likes of Steve Johnson, Wojcinski, Enright because they spend much less time in the midfield than the guys listed.

Interesting to note how low you rate Corey considering he is tagged by the oppositions number 1 tagger and is rated as the prime midfielder of Geelong outside the Cattery. Another thing to note is what you have stated about Johnno, Wojcinski, and Enright. Johnno obviously spends most of his time roving the half forward flanks and occasionally will drop down to the wing. So I agree with you there. However I can assure you that Wojcinski will be spending more time on the wing than in the back during the next few seasons. His pace will be handy and you will probably only occassionally see him dash out of the back half. Enright- I am surprised you don't rate him as primarily a midfielder considering he racked up the second highest number of possies at the club this season. I read somewhere that Bomber chucked Enright down to the half back so he could even out his game and add a new defensive facet to it. A good move, as it will help round out his game in the future and help with the defensive side of his game. I know he gets alot of his possies in the back flank, but I would consider putting Enright in that list of yours as well.
As of such here is my list:

Ling
Corey
Chapman
Ablett
Enright
Kelly
Bartel
Spriggs

As for Moloney, I think he will only occasionally play in the centre, as I see him playing more on the flanks (half forward and half back). His dash off the half back will be crucial, and his ability to kick long goals will be handy of the half forward flank. A bit like what Chappy on the half forward flank; switch between forward and midfield.

I know i'm biased, but i think you're being harsh on Chappy.

As you mentioned, he spends plenty of time forward, yet averages only 2-3 touches less a week than both Corey and Enright, whilst he kicks more goals, takes more important (read contested) marks, and creates much more.

From where i sit, Chappy is clearly better than both Coreys. Tougher, stronger, better skills and more damaging.

Ling - clearly the best.
----------
Corey - gets the best tagger, not quite in Ling's class yet.
Chapman - the enforcer, plays forward and kicks goals too.
----------
Ablett - still plenty of improvement left in him.
Enright - needs to work on disposal.
Kelly - needs to become more consistent.
----------
Spriggs - 2004 is a big year for him, 2nd year back after his injury.
Bartel - promising young midfielder, needs to improve in some areas.
Wojcinski - play him on the wing, Bomber!
Moloney - promising young midfielder, will be interesting to see where he plays next year.

Ling is the obvious choice for no1, but i think that kelly needs a bit more consistency, bartel doesnt get the chances he deserves, everytime he plays he plays well but doesnt get the opportunity to build on, corey is a consistent player, spriggs could be a top midfielder, just has to beef up a bit and get some of the confidence he had in 2000, enright i consider a backmen now, a good one aswell, chapman and ablett are great players, and should keep playing the tag team role of rover/forward. I reckon this year josh hunt could turn into a great wingman, just has to play consistent and stay injury free, its his make or break year
