That St Kilda side was ridiculously talented and should’ve won a premiership. Grant Thomas got them to a prelim and (almost GF)… calling them a basketcase when he took over is a comically inaccurate take.
Wanna hear about freos finals record pre Ross Lyon from 1995-2011?

It's garbage. Only made finals in 2003, 2006 and 2010.

And you wonder why I savoured all 9 of those finals under Ross Lyon from 2012-15.

Poort have had some absolutely elite assistants or have gone on to get the top job
Voss
Walsh
Richardson
Carr
Brett Montgomery

Over the last few years it's becoming clear that you need more then just a good head coach. You need very good assistants to get the best out of players and Port have definitely done this.

I don't know if Ross is up to the landscape clearly changed between him starting at freo and now

On paper his record speaks for itself but were talking over 10 years ago
bounce of a ball and he's a premiership coach
Port loses two Prelims by under a goal and Hinkley would be in the same category as Lyon
Just on the assistants thing, Lyon I think it was has been quoted as saying that for the 2010 season, our football department spend was a whopping $3million less than Collingwoods was.

Him, SOS and Elshaugh were carrying an enormous load.

And Geelong beat St Kilda by 12 points so the Hawkins goal also doesn’t mean s**t now does it, so why bring it up?
Of course it does, because it’s what’s called a “sliding doors moment”. As in, everything after that point happened differently as a result of what happened.

In this instance, Geelong got 6 points for a ball that clearly hit the post, and instead of the ball being in St Kilda hands for a kickout, it went to a neutral centre bounce. Geelong then got the centre break and scored another goal within seconds of that centre bounce.

So two goals within 65 seconds, off the back of a ball that hit the post.

So what “should” have been 1 point, a demoralising miss from the goalsquare, and ball in St Kilda’s hands, quickly became 12 points to Geelong. In a close, low scoring game (was 31 points each, 24 mins into the 2nd, when he hit the post).

Which was cancelled out by the St Kilda dubious double goal at the end of the second quarter

WTF. AFL media said Hinkley should be extended only if he makes a prelim.

That's ******* outrageous and unreasonable expectation and pressure on Hinkley.

Reckon Semi/Top 6 is a good middle ground.

I think a two year extension for top 6
And 3 year extension for top 4 when the dust settles.

I agree with the wtf. That standard is too low. He should only be extended if he makes a Grand Final at a minimum. By the end of this year he will have already been the longest serving coach in AFL history at one club without making a Grand Final by over a season and a half.

This should all be a moot point because he should have already been sacked at the end of any of 2018, 2019 or 2022.

Ken has also squandered much better playing lists than Lyon
In 2009 the Saints nearly had an undefeated season with stars at every line and very good key position players, I think this is exactly what people mean with Ross Lyon gets a lot of credit for underperforming, the Freo team was loaded too.

Ignoring all the more personal off-field stuff we know for a fact that he:

  1. Has a disposition towards playing unsuitable favourites like Zac Dawson which blatantly backfired in big games, consistently played some weird guys like Clarke even though they were terrible inside while if they were good on the run, in that gameplan they were never going to show it.
  2. Sidelines good players like Luke Ball, which so blatantly backfired in big games (led at 3rd quarter grand final, randomly benched Ball in the entire 4th quarter and got overrun).
  3. Despite having star studded lists and superstar key forwards, was top 4 in scoring ... once.
  4. Does not develop stars. He just doesn't.
  5. Has a history of not accepting any fault and talking down to reporters who question anything, while deflecting to what other teams were doing.
He is a Paul Roos acolyte who also massively underperformed with an amazing list IMO, self-sabotaged really talented lists with a reliance on defensive tactics. If they lost, well the scoreline was so close, it's almost as good as winning!
