Coach Kenny Hinkley - should he stay or should he go (or will he be here until the end of time)?

Not trying to be a dick but do you consider shitting the bed in two consecutive prelims his fault? Was it game plan, lack of on field leadership, what does a Port fan consider it to have been?

The side is mentally weak and can't handle pressure and expectation. The coach has to cop some responsibility for that, especially when they've been there a decade and basically built an entire new list.

Were Clarkson's players all magically mentally tough or did he impart some of that into them?

The bitterness and hate for a long term (and fairly successful) coach is astounding. Maybe you don't rate him fair enough (not sure I do), but apparently he is Darth Hinkley who only coaches so he can bleed Port for money and ruin the development of all their HoF standard players.

And get free Coke Zero.
You have to live with it every week to understand, he's an absolute fraud who's answer to everything is to work harder, and the sad thing is it's the quality of the list that keeps saving him enough to make port a high quality vanilla as apposed to home brand vanilla

Has Ken ever been popular with Port fans?
Seems from day dot he just never seemed to gel with the fans.
Ken was ok, in the first 2 years. But his failure as a coach was covered up by the fitness program implemented by Burgess who gave port a edge over the comp in 2013-14. Once the rest of the comp caught up by 2015 we have lived with ken spewing out excuses for not creating a genuine premiership team, and that is including 2020-2021. The club has always been mentally weak and this has been swept under the carpet by ken since 2015 because he knows his job security it being chummy with the players who always support him because he doesn't call out their weaknesses

Not the only culprit, but I definitely consider both of those prelims to be primarily on Ken.

In particular 2021, we had players openly talking about how they were going to go in the grand final against Melbourne before the opening bounce. Our captain said that it was during the game they felt like they were still on holiday. That s**t should have been absolutely squashed by the head coach in the lead up. It doesn't matter who you're playing or where, a preliminary final is always a tough ask yet we walked out there expecting the win to just happen. 100% of the focus in the lead up should have been on that game and nothing else.

The result wasn't addressed in the aftermath either. Some younger players got scapegoated for the failures of the coaches and leaders, and again the side just expected to walk back in to another prelim this year. Its no surprise that we got jumped by, with all due respect, some very average sides early in the season.

Mentality and consistency have continuously been a problem over the last 10 years, as well as rising to big occasions, which at this point has to be on the coach. Its why our record against top sides is terrible. You'll notice that when the pressure is off we dominate - look at our comebacks this year once the game looks done, like the game against Carlton for example, or our general record against bottom sides that don't challenge us. Its how we've maintained one of the best W/L records in the AFL while never really being a threat, because we don't perform when it counts.

Yeah but you're forgetting none of that is Kenny's fault. It's always somebody else's fault. Judge him on his wins, not his losses 🙄

He needs to go, port fans if you need help I’ll ring up the guy that dumped manure at the RFC when Danny Frawley was coaching. I’m sure the smell would make Ken leave.

Good coach if you want to consistently finish between 4th and 10th, but ...

After 5 years of mediocrity you become impatient for success.

After 10 years you want to kill yourself.

No other supporters can relate to this sense of frustration because in the history of the V/AFL no-one has ever lived as long under a single coach without making a GF, let alone winning a premiership. We're in uncharted territory here.

How come the fans hate him so much but the players seem to love him so much?
because he doesnt hold then accountable on the proviso they dont stab him in the back, the few that have questioned hinkley soon found themselves out the door quickly. Its a nice little boys club down at alberton where you can play your career out and Ken will even prolong your career as long as you prolong his. Just bear this in mind, have you heard even a whisper from the coach or playing group as to why they got flogged by 10 goals against a banged up bulldogs in a prelim.......the cricket tell you everything and thats just a recurrence of the past 10 years under hinkley.

Failure helps build that mental toughness, then from what I understand it was the players holding themselves to more account for their actions in big games for the Hawks.

Fair enough mate, it's weird though because Kenny is seen as that 'motivator' rather than a tactical coach, but it seems he can't do this that well.

The calls of being a destination club, players loving the coach, etc... just reeks of a soft culture.

Boak's bio program on Fox Footy recenlty just highlighted the attitude the club has taken to make the players feel special and appreciated and less focussed on field results and success. The culture no longer reflects the creed the club has been driven on since the 1950's.

The ruthlessness and the ability to kill off any team no matter what position on the ladder doesn't exist anymore. We have become the ultimate flat track club and its sickening. The fans want see the hard edge in our team again that is feared. Hard at the ball, hard at the body, never slow down when in front & never give up when behind.

I think he played the motivator role well in 2013 & 2014 and was a cog in the relative success of those two seasons. I think his own drive dropped off after that and so too did his ability to motivate others.

Time for a change I think it's been a bit overdue not sure on the president though he gives mixed feelings doesn't seem to make hard calls.

Interesting who would Port fans like as next coach ?.

After watching tonight's game, there's no doubt McRae has done wonders in his first season as coach, deserves to win coach of the year. Meanwhile stinkley has fluked his way to riches, just in the box either sculling cokes or sitting with a blank expression whilst achieving NOTHING. I hope koch was also watching & is planning to sign Clarko (if not then perhaps Buckley, Yze or any other decent assistant), freeing us of the no-hoper for good.

We North fans under Brad Scott, nearly got to 10 years. So genuinely understand the frustration of Port fans.
Sometimes success looked possible, but you just know deep down the club will fall short.
