Kerr vs Hodge

This was never going to be anything more than a club vs club argument, like everything is on these forums. Anyway, it's close for me, but I went with Hodge due to the fact he has a major impact pretty much every game, whilst being tagged by the oppo's number 1 tagger.

yep:thumbsu:
Hodge has a penetrating handball, penetrating kick and better footy brain, easily the better footballer. If Hodge lined up next to Judd and Cousins you'd be undefeated.

I was disagreeing with the bolded part about Hodge being the better handballer, no way in hell that's even close to being true.

Yes of course, a heap of Hawks supporters didn't vote for Hodge.

That was not what I was saying. Go back over the posts and tell me how many non-hawthorn supporters voted for Hodge and how many non-WC supporters voted for Kerr. These are unbiased views, and from people who still acknowledge that Kerr is a star.

I think that there will be a few voting against Kerr, purely because of the dog acts he has committed. I can say I'd probably vote the same way.

People are biased for many different reasons, not just who their primary team is. Just because they dont go for Hawthorn doesn't mean they're not biased, or that they in fact know anything about the players concerned. Have a look at this old thread for example-

St Kilda supporters saying that they must be a better chance as more non- St Kilda people picked them, so they must be unbiased, and somehow that translates into them knowing what they are on about. (See post #26). Turns out they were very wrong.

Kerr, complete package. Racks up clearances, has pace, absolute gun!

the 2nd midfielder I'd take in the competition after Judd of course

Not dissing hodge who i rate, but dont think hes in Kerr's class

So just because Hodge is a very average Link up Half forward or Loose man in defence makes him a better player ?

You're totally embarrassing yourself. Learn about the game and actually watch some games that don't involve West Coast, it won't hurt, I promise.

Contested marks for the season

Kerr - 7

Hodge - 3

I know Eagles fans like to think that football started in 2006, but some of us know better. The Hodge 6 contested mark CHB game was in 2005.

Only because its the only position he can play. I'd still back Hodge anyway if he ever got himself fully fit and played predominantly out of the centre. He simply has more strings to his bow. Which is not to say Kerr isn't excellent.

Kerr is far more damaging by hand, easily the best at west coast.

Best at West Coast maybe, but there are another 15 teams in the competition.

That sentence might make sense if West Coast finished at the bottom end of the ladder last year.

Considering they finished on top of the ladder and won the premiership, it doesn't really make sense at all?

Ah because the team with the best player always wins the premiership right?

Not necessarily, but Kerr is a big game player who was critical to our finals success last year, especially the GF. It hurt us badly when he went down during the '05 GF.

He is one of the best players in the best team of last year, probably right behind Cousins and Judd who are in a league of their own.

Prior to '05, people would try to downplay Judd's achievements by saying he hasn't proven himself during finals yet. Well at this stage Hodge hasn't, whereas Kerr most certainly has.

This is a great poll...I cant split them...would be interesting to see how they would go playing for opposite teams..that may make it easier to distinguish

How does any of that impact this discussion?

A player in a great team who dominates is in no way guaranteed to be greater that a player in a mediocre team who dominates.

Who says that was what i was implying? Could Hodge be even better in a dominating side?....or could Kerr be less effective in a lesser side?

If that doesn't make sense to you, then you sir are a farrking idiot:thumbsu:

Argh, tough decision.

Kerr is a fantastic midfielder, no doubt about that. When he's out we miss his poise, his baffling ability to dash through a pack grab the ball and make everyone else look like they are standing still. At times though his kicking, especially for goal, can let him down, and when he goes missing (rarely) he really goes missing.

Hodge when at his best can be hard for teams to control, he can break a game open, I know, because he did it against us. Cops the opposition's best tagger almost every week, and I've watched in amazement as he stands and fights for his entire team, won't take a backward step, won't let a teammate be pushed around.

So if I were starting a team from scratch and had to take either one of these, providing they were both fit, I'd have to take Hodge.

How many games has Luke Hodge torn apart?

I'm really surprised Hodge is leading this poll. Kerr has easily been better to date. Hodge might end up the better player but that's still a pretty big call as there's just as much chance he'll never hit Kerr's heights.

Also, I wonder what the poll would look like if Kerr was taken at #1 and Hodge at #18. Would it make any difference?

Kerr is more hot and cold, but when he tears games apart, he really tears them apart. And there is no way Hodge has a better handball than Kerr. Overall though I would rate them fairly similar, Hodge a better kick and probably a better football brain (trying not to be biased here), Kerr a better inside player.

Very close between the two of them, and I voted for Kerr because he's an Eagle :D. I wouldn't trade him for Hodge.
