Key forward solution

Looking at the 'types' of forwards and their roles, I have listed the players that can fill these roles next year.

Linking Player (HFF)
-Fyfe
-Pitt
-Morabito

Power Forward (CHF)
-Pavlich
-???

Forward Line Pressure (HF)
-Mayne
-Mellington

Mr Magic (FP)
-Ballantyne
-Walters

Leading Forward (FF)
-Anthony
-MJ (The Ross Lyon Project for 2012) :D

Pack Crasher (FP)
-McPhee
-Bradley
-Clarke

Kersten at pick 16 should be ready to fill that 'power forward' role at CHF (or does he play more the leading forward?)
If he isn't available we definatley need that type filled in this draft or PSD...

Sandilands and Griffin should never be used as a 1st choice forward and only sit up front during a game for a spell.

If 211 needs his load to be managed next year I would prefer to see him be rested for the games against GC, GWS, Port etc and let Griff ruck it out with Zafro.

I think he is a more leading forward. Doesn't get a lot of possessions but has a high scoring ratio when he does get the pill. He's also very solid but at 190cm's recruiters may think he is a bit too short to be the key target forward for when Pav retires.

This time last year I assumed we would draft tall. We did get JA and we did get Faulks, but neither have had any impact, and that could remain their contribution to the club. Interesting to see what Lyon can make out of them.

I am assuming we will draft tall this year, and as fate would have it (if mock drafts are worth reading) a host of players look available; Kersten, McInness, Lockyer, Talia, Dobosz etc all seem to be valued in our draft pick hotspot of late 1st-mid 2nd round draft pick. That creates an alignment of need and best available. And it sounds like some of them can play straight up.

Go get 'em Bond.

From an outsiders perspective I cannot for the life of me understand why Pav isn't stationed in the goal square each and every week until he retires irrespective of how many mfs are injured.

ps...I trust Lyon may bring the old Pav back ala Riewoldt.

Sounds like a ' pick 29 ' type if I've ever heard of one.

Excuse my ignorance as not seen or heard much of Kersten.

How likely is he to be available at pick 16?

Is he a top 20 pick or a below 30 type pick but one we are looking at to fill a gap and play a role?

Who would be other forwards we would look to draft if thats what we decide to do with pick 16 or 20.... or 29 for that matter?

Oh two posts just before mine literally answered my questions as I was writing!

IMO would have been a top 10 pick if he hadn't been injured and missed this years U18 championships. Played Senior WAFL last year and was very competitive, and had a good end of the colts season. Very good contested mark and excellent kick, the only major "drawback" is he only Pavlich size.

Could go anywhere from 15 to 40 I reckon.

Jackson Paine - #16
Usual midfielder who slips - #20
Shane Kersten - #29

How does that look?

Paine seems the more power CHF ala Pavlich, Kersten leading in the forward 50 and a top 20 midfielder.

If we want Kersten I would take him earlier. There look like a heap of decent mids around that stage of the draft and unless someone is a standout, get Special K.

I like it thats what I'd go with I think Kersten will slide to 29.

I do think we need another mid tho so maybe there is a delisted or mature age player we can grab in the PSD that Lyon can get the most out of.

If available what about T. Elton at 16? can play forward as well as play stints in the ruck for us when sandi goes forward occasionally. He has alot of potential and would be a good pick up.

yes agree with that Kersten good and I think pick 16, then Paine 20 then a good tough inside mid eg Waldhuter 29

I do think we have lacked in the strong nuggedy body type but with quick hands and break away......at 56 Marley Williams as example

Zyrus is a natural I would like to see us take a punt on him even at 29 if they are happy with his psyche but......from him enculturation and from the club acculturation......could be great for Fremantle to have Zyrus

I see a lot freo on here saying "Mitch Clark, pressure's on him now" but there's also gonna be a heap of pressure on whoever freo pick up with pick 16.... I hope he's better than M Clark....

EDIT: You wouldn't wanna see another one added to the list ...

my friend you must be young and a little naive McPharlin becomes an all Australian and Croad while he did move back to Hawthorn goes on to become a centre half back in a Hawthorn premiership. Now today if such talent was to be put up what picks would be offered by clubs for their services

And you incorrectly compare our pick 16 with Mitch Clark ....how many pick 16's will have a contract of a couple of million over four years.......i dont think he or the club is under pressure because the deal did not go through....the opposite in fact
but thank you for your opinion:)

I think Kersten will slide to 29 as he is that size similar to Darling that most AFL recruiters dont rate as a KPF in the big leagues. He also isnt rated as highly as Darling was and really didnt set the world alight at the draft combine so I dont think he will be taken before 29 but who knows really.

In the end I still think that the first players to get a crack at the KPF position should be either Johnson, Anthony or Bradley. I'd actually like to see them all played as FF and CHF in the preseason comp (if that gets played next yr) or intraclub matches and instruct Pav to sit in the goalsquare out of the way. I hope this will show us that one of them can stamp their name on one of those positions and lead us in to 2012 with confidence that Pav wont have to do everything down there next season. It might even give us some depth as Harvey showed a great reluctance to play any key forwards at all last season.

we need a straight up forward. not a forward moonlighting as a ruckman. not a forward cum midfielder. a tall, preferably big bloke, who leads, marks, turns around, chucks up a bit of grass, kicks it through the big sticks and does nothing else, except maybe lay some tackles. a larrikin who the ladies like, with a bit of dash, strong enough to move a fridge on his own, light enough on his feet to sidestep a goose. we need one of these.

A cross between Peter Parker and Thor ;)

I'm simple.
Some who can kick straight will do me.

Callum Wilson has been delisted by the chooks. Would he be worth a rookie spot? While I'm not for taking discards from down the road, I reckon he could be worth a spot. Probably a question for those who spend lots of time at the WAFL, but is there more upside to Wilson than Sibosado?

Yes...WILSON...:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Agree 110%...absolutely jipped at Wet Toast...great kick, can mark....twice the player Ryan Murphy was...plenty of upside...
