Petrie Signs on... Never pegged him as an option, but he's officially off our list

Was listening to the start of 6PR sports talk last night & Boris opened the program banging on about how it's crap that Freo aren't having a go at signing Buddy.
In defence of Ross Lyon & Freo, Peter Bell suggested that maybe Freo are having a red hot crack at chasing Harry Taylor &/or Jesse Hogan / maybe both. Good to hear Hogan still being talked about.

Just speculating / thinking about Jesse Hogan, I understand he'll have to serve out a minimum (2 year?) contract with Dees starting next year, unless he is released from his contract early. While this would be very difficult to negotiate / pull off, I'm encouraged that he hasn't signed a contract extension locking him in for a further term (ala Jack Martin). If Dees gave Toumpas an extension before he played a game, there's no doubt in my mind that Melbourne would offer Hogan one, particularly after he played a starring role in one of the early NAB cup games as a 17 year old. For any hope of Hogan coming to Freo, the most important pre-requisite is for him to truly want to leave Dees & come to Freo - so the fact that he hasn't been seduced into signing on for any further term is a good start.

Imagine this hypothetical scenario - Hogan makes it clear to Dees he doesn't want to be any part of Melbourne's future plans / will not re-sign at contract end / will appeal to AFL to be released for homesickness / etc, while Dockers simultaneously offer to trade for a combination of players from Sheridan / Clarke / Neale / Mellington.

It would cost us a fair wack. Either a 3 way deal where the Dee's get access to a top 6 pick and we cough up at least 2 young talents or we have to give them our top 2 picks and 1 top quality junior and genuine best-10-players at the club type. They always have the option to threaten to let him walk where he would go pick one in either draft whether he professed a desire to back to WA or not.
I think it is highly unlikey we will ever get him.

I think we have a chance of getting Gumby, Pears and Taylor, and the first two wont cost us the world either.

Hurley, Crameri, Daniher Gumby. Which one loses in this scenario?

Exactly. From what I see Essendon, North and Melbourne all have surplus tall forwards that cannot all play.

Would love to get Hogan if Melbourne were to trade they have Dawes, Clark, Hogan and Watts now only two of those can play up forward and all will struggle if their midfield supply doesn't get a whole lot better. Would part with our 1st pick and a present best 22 mid/HBF to get him given at least one of Crozier/Suttcliffe/Michie/Simpson look like coming on and Neale/Mellington/Sheridan have a chance as well.

I am sure Bondy has this in mind and is working behind the scenes. A young gun like Hogan plus an immediate FF/CHF option from our cap room would be bloomin ideal.

Hooker, Carlisle, Hurley? Too tall. Pears to us :)

You're a big wrap on Pears. I like him, but you've got a little crush it seems.

Care to expand?:)

I also don't understand the Hogan love by some here.

He's no world-beater. And we aren't at panic stations just yet.

I guess it depends on what you mean by world beater.

I have seen a lot of Jesse and he is an outstanding talent. One of the best contested marks that i've ever seen in junior football. He is also very quick and agile for a player of his size and can run all day.

He is also very good on the lead and on the ground.

Having a size advantage counts for a lot in junior football when it comes to out muscling his opponents in marking contests, but it's his other traits which make his ceiling so high.

Isn't Pears only 191? Would people see him as a McPharlin replacement or a third tall?

I like Pears. He's suffered a bit with injury but his first few years were very good. Has good disposal, perhaps a little small for the really tall forwards. Guys like him who are decent, and being squeezed out would be good to have a crack at.
If Frawley was out of contract I'd say have a go at him too. Bloke needs to get out of that shit hole.

Hogan is a beast marker and he moves really well for his size. I wish we actually could've got him.

From an Essendon P.O.V in order of most gettable would be;

1. Tayte Pears - 23 y.o KPD from East Perth who has really stagnated in the past 12 - 24 months with a series of injuries coupled with the rapid development (and return) of other KPP's on our list. No one could foresee the development in Jake Carlise and the returns of Stu Crameri and Scott Gumbleton. If we were to be offering him up (which I can see us doing), a pick in the vicinity of rounds 2 - 4 would suffice.

2. Cale Hooker - No one is untouchable, despite Hooker playing arguably career best football a suitable trade could be dealt (as suggested by the late trades offered up for him last year). Really turned his career around this year being played on the second tall rather than the main man (and trust me it helps playing on Josh Jenkins instead of 'Tex' Walker).

3. Scott Gumbleton - If you had of asked me 2 months ago I would have said take him for nothing. However, he has come back and really proven a few naysayers wrong. Has even kept Ryder out of the team this week (although playing as a second ruck v Blicavs isnt exactly tough :p. Again, a suitable trade came up and we might potentially entertain the idea. Something in the vicinity of a round 2 - 4 would do it IMO.

The rest - all untouchables :D

That's the problem for me.

He's a "tweener". Not big enough, yet not small enough.

Wouldn't slash my wrists if we had a crack at him tough.

Hogan to me is still just a nice highlight reel.

Just doesn't do enough apart from take a nice grab.
