Jack Darling is not the sort of player that you can build a forward line around. He's a complementary forward, a bit like Mayne is. You put Darling in our forward line without Pavlich and he's going to cop the best key defender every week and probably get towelled. We could get better value elsewhere given we'd probably have to pay $500k+ to get him. I'd rather get an ordinary key forward with at least some size for not many $ to fill the same role.
Who's gettable and better value? I've never had a look at every list, but I can't think of a genuine power forward. And we need someone with some presence. Even if they take the best defender, opening up Mayne and Ballantyne is seriously beneficial. Our forward structure is so all over the place – a great attribute of those blokes we have is their defensive pressure and their hard running... freeing them up do that, without leaving an empty 50, is a good thing.
We won't win a flag unless we spend the money, make the trade, and get a good forward.
For me, would go after Mitch Clark. Melbourne have Dawes, hogan, and watts. Plus two rucks. Maybe, trade Sheridan and our second round picks for Clark and third round pick.
Would he come now?
I mean, theoretically he should. Got to go to Melbourne for a bit and now he can claim a flag and get (maybe even more) good money at Freo. He'd be an alright get but I don't know if it'd be a chance of happening.
If it was, I'd give up Sheridan, Michie, and a second rounder. Or Sheridan and a first rounder.
