Key Forward

On the subject of Key Forward;

I wonder if we could be better off going for much more mobile talls in the forward line, rather than hulking gorillas. I am talking about players along the lines of Fyfe, Morabitto etc, but with more of a forward focus. A little taller than Mayne, a lot more nimble than Cloke.

My theory is this; unless the gorillas are genuinely good (which we are unlikely to get at our selections), then their production is pretty average. No problem with average by the way, but we just saw Geelong get punished for a gameplan built around kick it long to the big guy. I am suggesting a forward line with players like Marsh, Mayne, Morabitto alongside someone like Taberner and a ruck. Those guys pushing up the ground and turning their opponents could be pretty interesting.

The other thing is that a lot of defences now do not have match-ups for that kind of set-up.

There has been long term thoughts about Mora eventually ending up there - he may still yet after a few years developing in the mid. Fyfe may also end up there in the future - we all know his contested marking ability, something Mora would need to develop further if he progresses there. Both have great tanks and with even more kilo's at the appropriate time will be gorillas whilst they should still be extremely mobile. Apart from our need for a clear Pav replacement we really aren't that bad off from a Forward point of view, remembering Taberner and Hannath (F/R) development.

IMO KPD are our greater concern, with Macca retiring soon (hopefully we get at least 1 more year) and MJ (also ZacD) getting older.

I am not necessarily targeting Mora or Fyfe. One of the reasons Pavlich has worked well for us historically has been his mobility. In modern terms he is a "short" KPP, not that it matters. But we play a style of football that isn't really about stay at home forwards, and the pace and agility and size of players such as Mayne, Mora, Fyfe and Marsh will create a bit of havoc for defenders. Fyfe and Mayne are decent marks as well.

I know there is a trend to a gorilla or 2 at the pointy end, but I can see one of Clarke/Moller/Taberner/Hannath providing that, and then going with pace and size with tall/medium players + the likes of Crozier, Ballantyne and Walters. Dangerous.

Another thing to consider is the size and type of players we have in our mids - 4 of our current team are bigger and heavier than Mayne (Fyfe, Mundy, Barlow, Crowley) and with Mora next year (Fyfe and Mora are as tall as Pav). They are all proven (or now proving) goalkickers. We are in a very fortunate position with this - it does actually provide somewhat of a natural progression of the best big mids (only need 1 or 2 to have the capability over a 4-5 yr period - Fyfe already has the capability IMO) to move into that Pav type position. Naturally Pav is a one-off, but I am sure there is plenty being learned along the way from him. RTB is certainly aware based on what he has said the last 2 yrs about that continuing focus on improving our mid's scoring (including our outside mids).

We smashed Geelong in the midfield, it really wasn't their plans going forward that cost them the game. Going long to the big guy is a fine plan when the guy is of the quality of Tom Hawkins or Jarrad Roughead, and you have quality small forwards to mop up (which we do).

If all you want is a hit-up forward, then you don't need a KPP to do that. Small forwards like Mark Williams and Mark Lecras are quite capable of playing that role, but we already have one of the best in the business in Chris Mayne. What we need is a power forward who can take contested marks, along the lines Hawkins, Cloke or Jarrad Roughead. (Could have also mentioned Josh Kennedy but I didn't want to make anyone lose their lunch).

All 4 of those players would have been or were top 5 draft picks. I just wonder if we are more dangerous if we are a bit unconventional.

Hogan is understood to be very happy living in Melbourne and excited at the prospect of Roos becoming his new coach.

So I guess I was just talking shit when I said Jesse Hogan really enjoys living in Melbs, and has been talking to other Claremont guys about how easy it is to adjust and how much better the lifestyle is.

Hogan is going nowhere. Loves the city of Melbourne too much and was offered a deal so ludicrously high for a 0 gamer, he'd be mental to leave.

An 18 year old is looking forward to his post retirement status, perhaps a gig on SEN huh? You're talking crap. I agree he probably won't leave, but it will be because no-one could afford the price. Not any other rubbish like that or loving Melbourne.

I've changed my assessment of Jesse White.
Even after a pretty average game from him on the weekend, I liked the way he competed & he showed glimpses of talent.
I reckon I was wrong to not see it in the past, but we all make mistakes & I'm prepared to own up when I make one.
Unfortunately, I think that his price may be too high since his recent good form & there are others in the market for big KPF's, so I am not confident that we will get him cheaply, if at all.

I still think he might struggle if he had to play as a proper Key forward, on the McPharlin/Harry Taylor class of defender. Who was on him this week?

True, but was White playing on Carlton's number 1, 2 or 3 defender? I didn't see much of the game

Mate, I smashed 2 much red wine on the night, but after Tippett went down he must have had at least the 2nd best KPD. I'm pretty sure Jamieson started on Tippett, so he might have gone to White after the injury. Hopefully he stinks it up on Saturday night anyway. :D
