To all you dicks who reckon we don't need power forward in the modern game, I'm watching Brian lake collect his norm smith for taking intercept marks against a forward line of short people plus one 192cm half fit key forward. Players like Mayne. Walters & Ballantyne are meant to augment your talls, not be your main Fwds. All this BS about all we need is a resting ruck plus Pav - take a look at Hawthorn. A tall fwd (Gunston) made a big difference in the final result.
Sorry if a bit OTT, but am a bit emotional right now.

Lake should never, ever have been the Norm Smith medalist - all of Gunston, Mundy, Birchall, Fyfe, Barlow and Sandilands had better games. Joke of an award by a loser panel of medalist selectors. Worst Norm Smith choice of the last 14 years.

To be clear, Lake's game has no bearing on our need or otherwise for a "power forward" - whatever you mean by that, as each will have their own definition of KPF/power forward/ medium forward.

For me, Gunston is hardly a "power forward" yet he won the grand final for the Hawks (or you could say our medium and small forwards - Fyfe, Ballas, Walters, Mayne - lost it with bad kicking). No "power forward" has performed on GF day since Lynch for the Lions. And even then he was repeatedly the beneficiary of great, great midfield passes and super-clinical clearances.

For what they are paid, and how much is given away to get them, so-called "power forwards" are the great chimera of the modern game. Go-on, just pick me and pay me all your fool's gold, then you can say you have a power forward.

Footnote - hardly any "power forwards" can apply pressure or chase worth a damn, and every single one of the current mob have huge, huge egos that can hardly be said to fit with the Ross the Boss mentality. Would rather have 3 Mayneys or 2 Gunstons than 1 so called power forward.

With Pavlich sort of pushing up now we have people like Walters there when Pavlich turns around for a forward entry but though Walters is full of skill he can't beat those tall back man that are in numbers as well but having a Aaron Black sort of player would be a great inclusion to our side.

There has been some talk about a lot of our rookies not a chance at making the big time well were was Cam Sutcliffe 12 months ago? now he is a grand final player. And Hayden Crozier unlucky to not make it to the finals but remember him and Jack Hannath in the Home and Away series plus Tom Sheridan played in a few finals and that one in Simonds against Geelong was spectacular!!!

Reckon we need a tall key forward who can contribute goals. He just needs to be a distraction so that Pav and Mayne can steal some easier marks; and/or Walters and Ballantyne to pick up the mess.

Kinda like our experimenting with Bradley and Crozier this year... could still work right?

Mitch Thorp is interesting. 194cm and I'd presume 92+kgs. He is the same height as Pavlich. He has also played up the ground recently so he's got a tank, which will only get better under Lyon et al.
They'd have to seriously consider bringing him in AND Gumbleton.

Could we afford to have both these guys though. Personally I can never see either of these two being stars and neither are necessary safe options. Not sure we have room for Gumbleton, Thorp, Taberner, Bradley, Pavlich on our list next year. I don't see Thorp as a very good option as we'd be picking him at a third round pick or something at best, if we get beaten to it we have very little back up plan by that point in time apart from wait until next year...again.

I do believe that next years draft is full of talls though.

Essendon's fans seem not to rate Fumbleton which I see as worry! I haven't seen him play much so I can't judge but to be fair he hasn't played much . I still would like him on our list, but i don't see him giving us anything more than say Kepler

yeah right - Keplar has his heart on his sleeve, falls to ground gets straight up before you can shout "keep your feet" gets the ball at ground level like a 160 cm guy. I just don't see "forward pressure" and Gumbleton in the same line, he is only valuable for marking and kicking goals with a style similar to Keplar. Keplar can ruck too. keplar and Gumbleton are basically like for like but Keplar is better and is better and is better

JONATHON Marsh wishes he wasn't tall.

The 191cm key-position forward starred for WA in round two of the NAB National Under-18 Championships, gathering 22 possessions and kicking four goals against the Northern Territory.

His performance has raised eyebrows from talent scouts around the country but Marsh is still coming to terms with his size and role.
