The guy that's been drafted for a grand total of three months, and still has two years to run on his contract?

Wow.
Yeah its purely speculation because he was a mad Hawthorn supporter.

Everytime GWS signs someone new his name is mentioned as being in negotiations. Even Corr from the same draft got a two year contract extension. Just smells fishy to me, especially when his cousin is playing for Hawthorn.

It's not a case of "even" Corr - Corr is the only player from the same draft, i.e. the one three months ago, to sign an extension. O'Rourke, Plowman, Jaksch and Stewart are also yet to sign extensions, but all five of them (including Whitfield) still have 19 more months on their contracts.

I'd be surprised if the Giants aren't involved in extension negotiations with Whitfield and probably the others, given they've proven to be very proactive at getting them signed, but I think you're reading way too much into not re-signing someone in the first 15% of their first contract. I suspect Corr probably just signed on for the extra couple of years relatively cheaply, so the deal was done quickly.

Adams would be the one left that they would really want to re-sign. Doubt he'll leave though, having his best mate Devon Smith up there will help him stay.

11 Taylor Adams - 2013
13 Sam Darley - 2013
16 Nathan Wilson - 2013
19 Nick Haynes - 2013
22 Shaun Edwards - 2013
25 Anthony Miles - 2013
32 Gerald Ugle - 2013
41 Josh Growden - 2013
42 Mark Whiley - 2013
43 Kurt Aylett - 2013
44 Tom Downie - 2013
45 Sam Schulz - 2013
47 Josh Bruce - 2013

so is this the group left un-signed if sumner puts pen to paper?

anyone that you guys are scared of losing there? darley and adams? has bruce come on at all?

ive been interested in growden but the poor kid cant stay on the park.

at least there isnt any losses there that will hurt you and you have some trade bait to manipulate another good draft pick. still the real test will come when your prime group is all in the 24-27 year age bracket in their prime and getting offered big money by other clubs that your cant spring their way.

I'd say these five would be the ones they'd really want to keep. Only from an outsiders view though.
I would also add Edwards and Miles to that list but the remaining guys will likely do it tough to get another contract, but that said I think we will try and give the NSW/ACT kids as much time as possible with the only one of this group who I can't see getting a new contract at all is Schulz.

Ugle and Wilson should get some interest from the wa clubs but I wouldn't expect more then a late second or third rounder for them. I personally think we should persist with the nsw/act kids. What's the point of being in nsw if we don't try our hardest to develop local talent.

i think it was a mistake to give the compo teams so many first round draft picks as it has discouraged them from developing local talent. anyway whats done is done but i dont see many local boys at gws/gc for their fans to cheer on. im sure their fans wont complain if your team is winning but i know having the local lad stewie dew playing for port meant alot to kids in the northern suburbs growing up.

you reckon gws will re-sign growden?

on one hand has been so unlucky with injury i dont see a team really trading for him so may sign with gws but if he does want out and has another offer i dont see gws would expect anything for him either. think they will hold out the hardball game for their star players if they need to.

i remember anthony miles played some very good football for the act side (or was it nsw? i reckon act if i remember correctly) racked up a tonne of football.

he doesnt have much in the way of weapons though and think he doesnt stand out. could find it very hard to crack the gws midfield with their #1 picks going through there. i think he should actively chase another opportunity for his career. in his case i might look to somewhere like st kilda. melbourne should actively chase him. perfect target for them. midfield accumulator, captain of his champs team if i remember correctly as i mentioned earlier i dont see gws playing hardball at all for their fringe players i think they will help them move and save hardball for their top kids.

On the NSW/ACT guys so far:

Townsend - has been re-signed until 2015

Miles - is an excellent chance to get an extension

Bruce - is also someone who might be given more time but there is still a bit of a question mark on him.

Aylett - has been very unlucky with injury but is rated well inside the club.

Whiley - has had some good games in neafl but may struggle to get an extension

Schulz - of this group of players he the least likely to get a new contract

Williams - on the rookie list but expect him to be upgraded

Redfern - also on the rookie list will either be given another year or will be upgraded

Also the u18 group from this years gws academy is rated a lot stronger then last years so that may put more pressure on players such as Schulz & Whiley

I suspect they lose the ones they don't mind losing. I'd be guessing at the following categories:

Hold:
- Adams
- Haynes
- Miles
- Downie
- Edwards

May want to leave for more chances (otherwise hold):
- Darley
- Growden
- Ugle
- Whiley

The rest may be struggling to be on the list next year, depending on how many they want to turn over.

They'll play them if they're good enough. GC have Zac Smith, Charlie Dixon and a couple more locked in. GWS has fewer because of the deplorable state of the NSW/ACT comp - a lot just wouldn't be up to scratch. Stewie Dew would've come with some solid pedigree.

The real Sydney AFL team drafted Sam Naismith, Brandon Jack, Daniel Robinson and Dane Rampe just this year alone. They also drafted Harry Cunningham last year after GWS had the chance to select him and didn't want to. GWS do not care about Sydney talent.

Silly comment, as those sydney based players were drafted from being in your zone area via the rookie draft just as GWS drafted Williams and Redfern from there zone area from the rookie draft. And at the moment GWS has over a dozen sydney players connected to the giants u18 squad and if there good enough they will be given a chance.

I don't get what you're feeling so offended about?

GWS's NSW players:
Miles
Townsend
Whiley
Aylett
Schulz
Bruce (ACT)
Redfern
Williams

I don't see Naismith, Jack, Robinson or Cunningham playing in your best 22.

Anyway confirmation we have re-signs Sumner until 2016. The fact it was only one re-signing suggested that we may just re-sign a couple more before the year is out and have the rest on the trade table
