Wayne Carey. Played true CHF first up, played as a true full forward in flag year of 96.

After battered by injuries, plays a great deal at centre half back and as a "big midfielder".

Silvagni kicked 10 in a game and two bags of 8 so had a heap of talent up forward.
Had Kernahan not been so durable would have been fascinating to see what would had happened had he been needed to go forward for a long period of time.

I think this is as close to the answer as you'll find, honestly. FB on the Team of the Century, arguably the greatest to ever play the position. He still managed to average almost a goal a game over the course of his career.

Alistair Lynch

Lynch was named at FB in the All-Australian side in 1993, when he spent the year up forward and took 143 marks and kicked 68 goals. Meanwhile, Gary Lyon's 120 marks and 36 goals earned him a spot on the HFF.

184cm Mark Harvey was named at CHB that year too. Weird season for "key defenders". Probably had something to do with all the goals that were kicked (16 players kicked 50+ goals), but no genuine small forward was selected to the side - 4 key forwards, plus Craig Bradley and Buddha Hocking, plus the aformentioned Lynch, and (relevant to the thread) swingman Nigel Smart on the bench.

Just remember fellas I'm talking about people that are genuinely really good at both ends of the ground, hence the idea "allrounders", not just someone who you can maybe swing up to the other end as a coverall.

I'm talking a Kallis or Sobers not a Mitchell Starc or a Glenn Maxwell!

Nigel smart was a key defender. When Robran broke his leg in 93, smart was moved to chf, where he won aa selection. Have a look at the chfs in 93, quite a list

He was back to defense in 97 and again after injury, thrown forward in the granny and kicked clutch goals late in the game

In 98 again thrown forward at half time in the granny and cut North to pieces.

One wonders why they didn't play in tandem up forward more often.

While he might have a bag of 10, from memory, he was very sporadic as a forward.

In the flanker size, Geelong had two that were essentially failed forwards, Hinkley and Mansfield. Both ended up AA as very creative hbf'ers.

Yeah, Horse was pretty cooked by 99, he got a game pretty much purely on his ability to negate and his leadership.

But he affected contests very well, he filled space, he played a role perfectly.

I didn't mean he won the flag off his own boot - Shagger Grant did that - I meant he was part of the side.

Tom McDonald. Started off as a near AA quality defender. Then he became shithouse at that and we moved him into attack and he was a near AA quality forward and now he's worse there than he ever was in defence.

Rodney Jamieson was the leading goal kcker in adelaides first season. In 97, he lined up at fullback in the granny. Played that role all year.


In 98, while modra was injured, he played forward again.

He's famous for laying into scott cummings at the start of the first showdown. Unfortunately he missed with the numerous haymakers he threw.
