He's a big lad and quick, but I'm not sure he's the contested marking forward that Bailey's looking for. Maybe worth a punt though.

We NEED a big guy that can take a contested mark and can kick straight. Someone our mids can target and kick to with confidence. If they can't mark, shouldn't even be considered.

Ben McKinley wants out.
Too small, only 185cm

If we are going to pick someone up id hope it would be a 3rd to 4 year KPF..
if we can't find that or match the needs of the club we should just pluck the best available to us in the draft. Say no to the mids otherwise we are going to go backwards, ala Carlton.

I listened to Bailey on SEN. He talked about the big contested marking forward and how he wanted Jamar to play that role but really couldn't cos he was needed in the ruck. He also said that we would prefer to use the draft for that but wouldn't rule out trading, so reading between the lines I would say we are after a forward\ruckman.

If we were to only use the draft then I can only think of Lynch, Gorringe and Lycett would fit that profile cos I'm not sure that Darling does cos he seems to play his best fooball up the ground like a Bate or Miller and with Cook at only 82kgs he would probably snap like a twig. Lynch and Gorringe will probably be gone by pick 12 with Lycett who could also be gone as the only other possibility.

If we were to look at trading then I would be going after Hale. I would give our 2nd rnd pick for him. I think that there is only 1 club with a better pick than that who would be interested and that's Freo and I think pick 20 is too high for him so if we were to get Lycett with pick 12, trade 31 for Hale, get pick 35 for Warnock and use our last 2 picks in 35 and 48 for the best available players who can run and carry I would be wrapped.

You had me sold until that silly gesture.

I would rather see us try to keep on our youth path to build the best possible team we can. Like LS I agree Gorringe or Lynch are our men. To be assured of getting one of them we will need P4 or P6.

To do this we will need to package a player like Bennell who we can cover or replace relativly easily with P12 and say hi'dy ho to West Coast. That way they get there small forward come outside mid and can maybe use P12 on Cook to pair up with Kennedy or another classy ball user.

We get Gorringe to play as that deep forward/ruckman.

Win/win

I reckon GC's pick 5 or 7 (plus 2nd rounder) might be easier to get and should still land us one of those 2 guys. Might cost us Jones (and pick 12) though.

Im pretty much writing Gorringe off he wont get past pick 6. And I dont like Lycett that much because hes mainly about tap work - but Cook is the next best behind Lynch and I reckon he ccould still potentially play a presenting, contesting KF role.

People, Jones is uncontracted. We can't just trade him to the GC and get a better pick... if they want him (and he wants to go there), they'll sign him - no need to trade.

IF Jones walked to the GC, I wonder what compensation we'd get. If Campbell Brown, who's 27, gets a first round selection, then surely Jones would be close too considering he is much younger? But then again he wasn't in our BnF top 10.

Fck knows how they work it out.

As Dc said he is uncontracted so no compensation or trade is needed they good just snap him up and steal.

No, we would be compensated with a draft pick, from the AFL. We just wouldn't be able to get anything from the GC in a trade sense.

Also, and I don't clain to know how they work it out, but I have heard that players in the (approximately) 23-27 age bracket will be considered the most valuable by the AFL when doling out compensation draft picks. As such, I don't think we'd get a better deal for Jones than what HFC did for Brown.

Ive been saying it all along but if Jesse White isn't signing with the GC we should really take a good look at him.

You have seen what Hall can do this year, old age and all, when he gets to play in a free wheeling team compared to Sydney's style of play. White could very well turn into our missing link with the quick delivery he will get from our midfield.

Plus, he can play ruck also.

I meant they, the GC, would have no need for trading with us, they could just steal him.
I stand to be corrected but if GC sign Bard Miller he should count as our "uncontracted" player?? Just because we dont intend to resign him doesn't mean that he's not currently an uncontracted Melbourne player until December 31st, 2010.

thats what i was thinking but they may choose to take another player and pick miller for free in other means maybe. Because I doubt there will be a heavy demand for Pia's husband.

I presume he can just nominate for the psd. Don't they have the first 5 picks?

I also read they don't want too many senior players because it will reduce their access to quality kids.

As someone said earlier, i would be willing to part with pick 12 if it meant snaring jesse white. He could not be the more perfect player we need, a big bodied stay-at-home forward with the ability to pinch hit in the ruck (although more suited up forward).

A deal like pick 12 + steak knives for White would probably be taken by them i feel and some may say we are getting the raw end of that but tough trades like that to fill needs will make us a far better side IMO.
