Kieran Jack... is it just me?

Or did he play ordinary last night?
Most of you seem to think he had a 'fantastic' debut last night... but I just couldn't see it. As a matter of fact, I think he played poorly last night, --screaming every time he made a blunder.

I'm not big on criticizing our own players... but this is an exception... and yes, I am aware that this is the kids first game, and nerves etc are inevitable.

To me, his kicking was poor, gave away a few cheap free kicks and his tagging was terrible. What am I missing? Why did he play well?
Um, your middle paragraph actually answers your own question.

I think that is absolutely the role they have in mind for him at the moment. There isn't another obvious candidate on the list at the moment for that small defender role - though Schneider has been used like this in the past.

He isn't as solidly built as Crouch - pretty obviously - but his frame looks like it will take a decent amount of development. Otherwise his physical attributes are pretty similar. It remains to be seen whether his mental ones are. On the face of it he looks like he has the potential to be a better kick than Crouch is, at least in terms of penetration. We need to see far more of him before we can determine how reliable his kicking is.

I think he could also go forward at the moment and snare a few goals as a crumbing player. He is probably better equipped to do this at top level than Phillips is at the moment, just because he is slightly bigger and strong enough to lay a tackle or two. There was a reserves game a few weeks ago where he kicked three goals in a quarter and showed he can size up a situation well and get boot to ball very quickly - which is pretty important for a crumber.

Well if he has shown the sort of goal sense that Phillips has in the past, then I'd say he could do a few jobs for us on any given day. Interesting to hear you assessment of his kicking. Crochy's kicking is a little underrated, he certainly can bang it long if he gets a head of steam up. But if Keiran has a penetrating kick off a couple of steps that would be very handy. And as for his build, with his pedigree, I'm sure he could end up a wiry little power house in time. Positive signs for sure.

You have me completely perplexed with that post.

I rate Phillips' performances in the twos very highly. He is consistently one of the best players and I love the variety of ways he is able to kick goals. I am glad he's been given a taste of senior football and I hope there is a lot more to see.

My comparison of Jack vs Phillips was in terms of their current physical readiness, as indicated by the phrase at the moment Anyone who has watched Phillips' senior games will have noted how easily his tackles are brushed aside and how his (very natural) instinct is to protect his body when in a pack situation. I have criticisms of the way he's been used at senior level. IMHO he needs to stay close to the goals and not try to wander up into midfield. Whether he does that under instruction or his own volition, who knows. But regardless of his talent, he is still very physically slight.

Jack's not huge either by AFL standards but those extra 4cm and, more importantly, 8kg do make a difference, especially when it comes to laying a tackle.

I certainly haven't said "stuff Phillips" nor "stuff Grundy" either. I like what I've seen of both. But I don't see why that should prevent also liking what Jack may have to offer too.
Point taken sorry if I affended you but Reg shouldnt have played when he did wasnt ready at all and I know he will get much much better and also for Phillips I dont think we have seen the best of him yet either

Agree with you on both those counts.

Hmm... maybe I was being a little harsh... but still though... I think we have to wait until his second and third games before showering him with praise.

Young Jack looked all at sea in the first three quarters. In the final quarter he seemed to pick up and got plenty of possessions even though they were in junk time.I was very surprised to see a first gamer get 94% game time in their debut.Good luck to the kid.Roosy obviously loves him so hopefully he will do well.

I have to admit... I think Jack played better last night than he did the previous week. Perhaps he'll keep improving each week?

Fingers crossed. :)

He's been dropped for Tadhg. But he'll improve no doubt about it.

He's definitley got his father's competitive traits. Its actually big in the NRL. The past 2 weeks straight, on the Sunday Footy Show and the Sunday Roast were talking about Kieren and his father, Gary. Gary actually was with the crew last Sunday.
