Hey guys could anyone tell me how zone selections work?

GWS for example with the NT, would Jed Anderson automatically go on to the GWS list next year if he chooses or would they have to use a pick in the draft?

As long as the player agrees, then they can be signed outside of the draft. The Gold Coast did it with Steven May and Liam Patrick last year. The only thing it costs the club is a spot on their list.

Although in the case of Jed Anderson, they would obviously have to wait until he is old enough.

He's an interesting one. Anyone seen him play? Seems a tad overweight, one wonders whether with a good preseason, a few less kg's and a greater fitness base, whether he could become quite a good midfielder.

1st round against NT he played a really solid game.

Far from a certainty to get drafted but thought I'd put his name forward because he has some attributes. Is stocky and can't run for extended periods on the ball but he attacks the ball and gives good effort none the less.

The small bits i've seen of him i've liked and think in an AFL program he could improve.

As Chris25 mentioned Jed Anderson is a 2012 guy. Looks good enough to go this year!
Looks like a 1st round quality guy for next year. Fantastic talent!

So if GWS likely finishes last next year they could potentially have a midfield with Shiel, Treloar, Coniglio, Wingard, Whitfeld (2012 #1), Anderson and maybe Scully in 2013.

That is insane!

Like Gold Coast, GWS will also have a super strong young core group.
2013 assuming pick 1 will be out of Whitfield/O'Meara.
Both by 2016 will be unbelieveable sides.

Lots of other more than hand prelisted players they already have who are super quality. Add Patton as well as Coniglio + Wingard to that group and you've got yourselves a very serious side.

Just checked it - Yes 2011, 2012 and 2013. Their concessions are much better than ours :( ;)

Particularly with the 4, 17 year olds they can trade and the two years to sign established AFL players.

But overall I think it pretty much evens out. 2010 was the stronger draft which made the concessions necessary if GWS want an equal chance for success.

The better of the two teams should come down to who capitalises on their draft year more.

Another advantage for GWS is that because they come into the comp after Gold Coast if they finish last next year they'll get the number 1 pick while the GC will get pick 4 this year.

I think Carlton might value him because of size, ability to play sooner rather than later and the value he respresents at that selection. Would bigger physical presence up forward to go with some of your surplus of crumbing types. Just completes forwardline if you find a quality full forward, maybe a Dobosz with a later pick.
.

Shifter seems to think Dobosz is a bolter.

Mentioned 1st round.

Can't say I disagree with him, his results speak for themselves, age is irrelevant, he's only played about 30 games of football.

Read in an earlier post from Ben also about him. Didn't know his history prior to seeing him and only knew that he was that little bit older.

Reviewed some of the Tasmania games since and not surprised Shifter thinks he could make the first round.

Incredibly impressive for a man of only 30 games! Fantastic story.

Would have to be in the 1st round mix.

Having not seen any vision of Dobosz, can you tell me what he is like as an overall footballer. Does he have the skill set and athleticism to make it as a modern key forward or is he more like a Panos of a few years ago?

Ex soccer player. Has only played the game for 12 months - this of course means massive upside. He kicked 7 against Vic Country hahaha. Absolutely dominated that game. Intelligent forward despite his inexperience.

I'd go so far as to say that he, Webster & McKenzie will get drafted. And I wouldn't be surprised if that's the order they go too.

Dobosz is a gun!

That's unreadable.

Use some punctuation

Tas are a great side, don't get me wrong. I'm Tasmanian and have access to Tas footage of sorts, but believe me - don't let that TAC Cup win fool you. As good as it was, they were playing against an unbeaten Sandringham side who had a number of first choice players out due to school football commitments.

knightmare how do you rate the mids, i really think port should target midfielders ( and primus has said our midfield is where we need to improve).

im interested in the pure mids, rather than the flanker mids.

dom tyson

toby greene

hoskin-elliott

liam sumner

brad mackenzie

taylor adams

shane nelson

how do these boys rate in terms of gut running, ability to win their own ball, and most importantly their disposal penetration and ability to hit targets?? seems to be a big gap between wingard/ coniglio and these guys from what has been said. greene has been very good last 2 games, can really find it.

yeah great stuff, very accurate from what i can see. went to the vic metro vs vic country clash tonight and was an interesting game to watch. One dom tyson had a fantastic game, best on ground. Would this see him jump a few spots? He had tremendous leadership qualities and his disposal is second to none. Has that general nack of finding the football, with the only question marks his pace (which has improved drastically) and a reasonably light frame. What do you reckon about him?

Michael Hartley is the boy who beat Patton.

Tied to Collingwood via scholarship.

If Collingwood took Waldhuter before Greene or Tyson I'd spew up. And Carlton won't be getting Buckley with a second round pick.
As I suspected, you would have to question how Tyson and Greene could be considered late 20's picks and I'm still waiting for Kelly to play a decent game so I can't understand why he's so highly rated.

What makes Dobosz stand out from the few games i've seen of him is his ability to read the ball in the air. Has excellent excelleration and 1v1 is not bad either physically.

Probably doesn't go for tackles as much as I'd like. Seems to chase but then seems to hesitate before tackling rather than really going for it - hopefully this will come with experience. That defense aspect to his game still needs developing.

Also his goal kicking totals I consider a little flattering. In the opener v Vic Country had either easy set shots from 30m out directly in front or cheap goals right infront of goal.
Set shot goal kicking routine I'd like to see more work go into. Seems to do a that few short quick steps then launch the kick. Needs work but from the games i've seen still seems to convert ok.

Overall still a raw, but exciting talent. Lots of improvement to come. Considering how new he is to AFL with only the 1 season under his belt. Could have a future in this league. Probable 1st rounder. Look for a St Kilda or other team looking for a KPF to look at him seriously in the 1st round.

Without a doubt one of the better forwards in this draft.

Lockyer at pick 40 is very low, on talent he's one of WA's top five, only behind Coniglio and Nelson. Would pick him up in the first round if we didn't have so many medium defenders from 187cm-191cm and a 191cm forward in Darling.

I find him hard to place due to height. If he was those 4cm taller he would be a top 15 selection. But Seb Tape did it last year so I could well be wrong again.

Without a doubt a solid talent and will go in the draft. Do regard him as more of a 2nd rounder than a 1st rounder though.

Of those you mention:

hoskin-elliott

shane nelson

taylor adams

dom tyson

liam sumner

Of those the ball user I like is Hoskin-Elliot. Adams is great because he consistantly forces the ball forward, has great strength and already looks like he could play at AFL level comfortably. Nelson I'd like to see a few more games of but he is right up there also amongst that group.

Both Tyson and Greene put forward a huge case tonight. Have them going in the teens after that performance by the pair of them.

Have both been standouts for Metro over the championships. Done wonders for their likely draft positions.

The main objective of this is to put some names forward and generate some draft discussion. The order will change drastically from now till draft day.

NSW/QLD/NT boys I left out because of zone selections or with the other NSW boys many are alligned with clubs and will go as rookies.

From Tas: Dobosz, Jimmy Webster and John McKenzie should go. Will edit them all in on my next update. Next year they have Jesse Lonergan who is probably the best of their group.

Totally agree on the putting the names out there call. There isn't a single journalist in the country that would attempt the first 62 picks at such an early stage. So it becomes a work in progress kind of thing.
So along with Tyson and Greene improving in the rankings, would certainly think Sam Docherty deserves a place in the draft, pretty high too.
