Aren't those the same sort of questions that saw Adam Goodes slip all the way down to the 40's, with some clubs passing on him up to 5 times, despite his immense potential?
There weren't really major question marks on Adam Goodes, he was a unique situation. Clubs could only pick 1 17 year old player, so he went lower than he otherwise would have

A broken leg is a terrible injury to get because, apart from the obvious, you lose basically all the strength in on leg.

That greatly affects balance, acceleration, etc.

I think Stringer's done very well to play almost a full season this year.

Getting back to the Saints trying for Hickey, how about Pick 13 for Hickey plus their pick 25 and their 3rd and 4th round picks that they are not going to use?

Failing that, how about a player for Hickey, maybe Montagna or Gilbert, and GC to throw in their 3rd and 4th round picks they are not going to use.

Both are contracted, and St Kilda would lose out on that deal

Although getting their latter rd picks is a good idea, because we have quite a few players that could get upgraded from the rookie list

Can't you just do that with really late picks, like in the 80's and 90's? I don't think there is any necessity to be using 3rd or 4th round picks for that.

Hey KM, you've probably answered this a thousand times but where would you rank Martin in this years draft?

Jack Martin would feature in the top 4 selection. Would have him at 8 in my power rankings.

I see where you are coming from however the old argument, list needs verse best available comes up. I would feel more confident in going with list needs with only one selection, however not the two top 20 picks.

In your opinion is there more value in going after best available midfielder at selection 12 then using selection 13 on Jaksch, Shaw or Clurey and then picking up a Tanner Smith, Tom Lee or Tim O'Brien with selection two?

It's also worth considering that we will likely lose Goddard as well as Jamie Cripps, that's two outside midfield utilities however we may pick up a Tom Hickey type with the Cripps pick or our second rounder.

What I'm getting at is looking at something along these lines:

Pick 12 - Wines / Vlastuin / Stringer
Pick 13 - Jaksch / Clurey / Shaw
Pick 34 - Lee / O'Brien / Smith
Pick 38 - Tom Hickey *

* Pick via WC for Cripps and forwarded onto GC for Hickey

This way we use pick 12 for best player available, pick 13 and 34 for best KPP's available and 38 for a project ruckman. Do you see that as sound list management and recruitment and something that we may do?

This is the other potential approach and I expect St Kilda to look into a number of different possibilities.

I'm probably not as keen on T.Smith/O'Brien as others and not a huge fan of those KPPs likely to be available later so would probably go for the Jaksch/Clurey combo first just to maximise those chances at adding those AFL quality KPPs.

But without a doubt all these possibilities need to be looked into and all these talents will be evaluated differently so entirely possibly St Kilda go with these type of scenario.

As far as comparing Stringer's form this year to the likes of Membrey and Jaksch, surely the fact Stringer is no-where near fully fit has to be taken into account? I mean I've heard that he has done brilliantly to just be playing again this year, so surely his form has to be largely ignored? He is probably only going at 70-80% fitness/capacity, compared to their's being closer to 100%.

Even if he doesn't get all his burst speed back, he is a similar height to the likes of Brendon Goddard, Jobe Watson and Josh Kennedy and they are not what I would call quick, so he could always play the sort of roles they do, couldn't he?

Absolutely Stringer's fitness needs to come under consideration. As well as this where he is coming from and how good he was.

Certainly has the ability to play a similar inside role to Watson/Kennedy or something more outside similar to Goddard. Will be interesting to see how good he can be.

Not wrong. Just to be considered a potential 1st rounder considering what he went through last year is an exceptional effort and he has shown great character throughout the process making sure he was ready to play this season after that terrible injury.

Hey Knightmare, sorry if you've already answered this but where would you rate Tyson is this years draft?

Would be among the top 4 selections this year. In my power rankings would fit him in around 8.

Getting back to the Saints trying for Hickey, how about Pick 13 for Hickey plus their pick 25 and their 3rd and 4th round picks that they are not going to use?

Gold Coast will probably keep their selections to a minimum but none the less they still need to use 3 draft selections so unless their final two selections are zone selections it's unclear whether this happens.

In St Kilda's situation I can't say I'd do this deal. At 13 there is a fair chance that you add a serious player. At 25 that chance really decreases in a hurry with it being more that top 15, maybe top 20 group who are the real top end talents this year. I don't honestly think this trade would be in St Kilda's best interests and it looks like a losing trade with Hickey not worth nearly this much.

Nightmare

Just wanna say good luck to your update post Trade Period..

Looks like it's going to be chaos and plenty of action in the pipes already.

Good luck bud and looking forward to it :p

Will be a fair bit of movement with all this free agent action. Fun in some respects with all the speculation. The players are really making the most of the chance to move!

Very low on time at the moment but I'll see what I can do.

Just wondering if anyone has any information on Joshua Waldhuter. Went to the national combine last year and was expected to go somewhere in the draft but didnt, would he be a chance in getting picked up this year at all? Has played well this year in the SANFL for Central District. Thanks.

I still believe Waldhuter should have been rookied at the least last year. But, he wasn't. So what he needed to do was cement a spot in the Central District league side this season, and really impress. But unfortunately he wasn't able to do either. His reserves form has been good, but that may not be enough. Especially now that he is looking like more of a defender than midfielder.

That's not to say he isn't without a chance. In 2010, Fremantle were interested in Cameron Sutcliffe but decided against drafting him. And then in 2011 (on the back of a very similar season in the SANFL reserves), they picked him up in the National Draft.

But, it'll be a long shot.

KM great work on your draft as always, there is a bit of love coming for Tipungwuti on the Essendon board at the moment. A lot of us think he may be our answer for a lightning quick small forward that we desperately need. Can you tell us more about his strengths & weaknesses?

Cheers

Should have received an opportunity last season.

Might be a rookie chance but no guarantees.

Most who have seen Tipungwuti like his game and for good reason. Impressive talent but missed out last year.

Very quick, evasive type player and could be a fit as that forward. Duel sided. Has a mostly good skill set. Has that ability to play forward or back.

Not a consistent finisher around goal and endurance still a work in progress but improving.

Hey knightmare.

Dogs fan here. How do you see the top 6 playing out if the suns bid on viney as they are purporting??

Thanks man

There will be plenty of change still to come in that top 6. Particularly with the minidraft still to come and GWS to trade those selections off.

If Gold Coast bid on Viney then likely Whitfield, Grundy and Toumpas go in those top 4 before the Dogs come into the draft. With O'Rourke/Mayes/Plowman those likely to be considered at 5/6 assuming those selections are retained.

You seem higher on Lachie hunter than some other mocks. A lot have him going 3rd or even 4th round. What do you like about him and which current player does he most resemble?? Should us dogs fans be a bit excited about him?

Waldhuter looks an AFL prospect but doesnt get enough of the ball at this stage - once you miss the draft as an 18 yo the competition to get picked up gets tougher. Centrals has probably 6-8 players worthy of a chance before him. The kid needs to perform next year.

Hey Knight... Few ??? for ya. about Esso

1. Who would suit Essendon better Tipungwuti or Irra...as we need a speedy forward... (dont think Daveys the man)
2. Can O'Rourke drop to our 2nd rounder?? i think he could be somewhat the steal of the draft..
and 3rd and final... if Kennedy drops to our second rounder any chance we would take him

Cheers mate!!!

EDIT: ok sorry just seen your update and you have moved orourke up a fair way!

So i ll change him to Stringer.. .Any way he can drop to our secind rounder

Thanks km.

I'd liken him to Dayne Beams without being that same level talent. Not the same level clearance player but has a similar feel to his game to what Beams showed early. Looks good on a forward flank and is a good finisher around goal. In congestion uses it well and has some quickness to him and a strong tackling game.

Every bit worth a 2nd rounder and I think you've got someone in Hunter. He's had an excellent season and while there is the chance he slips to that 3rd round selection I see him as worth a fair bit more and if he lasts later then that is just a bonus.

Possibly Tipungwuti. More of a forward/back pocket option.

Irra is more of an up field option and less of a crumber assuming that is more what you are looking at. Has great pace and a nice skill set but I like him more on a wing or back flank.

O'Rourke will absolutely not last into the 2nd round. Looks like a top 10 selection

Kennedy probably doesn't slide into the 2nd round. Most likely goes mid 1st round but it would be surprising to see him last past 25.

Stringer if he slides is more late 1st round, early 2nd round at worst. Can't see him lasting into the 30s. Stringer is too talented for that, but maybe if a Membrey slides he could be an alternative to Stringer.

Stanger things have happened. You can rarely expect it but players slide every year so you just have to be prepaired for it on the off chance that it does happen.

Would demons be happy if got ordure wines and stringer with first three if they dontk have to use first round on him or who would u think would be best with our first three picks

Knights what type of forward is Bourke. Geelong have knocked him back as a father and son. And rumour is Gold Coast are going to trade him to Brisbane, Just wondering what pick we would have to give up to get him and where you would rank him. And would he be a good player for brisbane to trade for
