bit of an obscure question knightmare but was just wondering what you though vic metros strongest 22 would like?
obviosly a bit hard at this stage but if you could tell me your thoughts would appreciate it! anyone else who wants to have a go feel welcome

Hey KM,

Was watching the Foxtel Cup qualifier between Burnie and Southport earlier tonight and was wondering if you knew anything about Burnie's midfielder/forward in Guy Grey? Looked to be pretty agile and have very good skills. It was a match of very poor quality but he really stood out to me. If you have any information that'd be great. :thumbsu:

Not familiar with Guy Grey. Perhaps a Queensland poster who sees more local footy up there might have more knowledge of his game.

KM, just on Dunstan/Sheed/Aish - I think it's entirely possible that Dunstan could end up the best of the three, given his strength and game style, he's a much more explosive player.

I'd like to see how the trio go at the U18 champs first before saying conclusively which of the three is the best.

For a period I was favouring Dunstan early but there has been some discussion that he may be an early bloomer and some questions as to how much development is left so I'd like to see whether he steps his game up again this year before evaluating where he is at v the field.

Interested in your justification for tipping that a guy that can't kick will be picked up so high?

I'd say Scharenberg can't kick either but then some have him going no.1 overall given his early season form so go figure.

Dumont has impressed some locals more than he has me so he may just go higher. In the games I've watched he's been sloppy with his ball use and his disposal efficiency has been exceptionally low so I'll re-evaluate him when I see more of him later in the year.

Be interested if GWS pick another Key Forward in Boyd.

Yeah with Patton going down with the ACL it is something that could come under consideration if he is evaluated to be the best talent available. I wouldn't put it past them. But having gone very KPP heavily last year I get the sense that GWS might ride their KPP group and let them develop first before adding something different.

Things should become clearer as the season progresses but anywhere inside that top 5 is possible for Boyd at this stage.

Jake Owen from Calder will get drafted.
191cm overage midfielder who was very good in metro trial game.

lol his dad's name is Guy. I don't know much about him, but I'll keep an eye on him when I watch Burnie play this year. They have a few youngsters coming through that have a chance of making an AFL list.
Wow...channel 7 commentary team must've wrote that one. They still call Matthew Boyd "Brad" and Mitch Wallis "Steve" most times. No wonder a Google search came up with nothing!

Thanks for that. Looked very clean and had pretty decent speed.

I'm not such a big fan of the Metro boys this year as I have been these past couple of seasons.

SA have the best talent and WA also would be right up there if not for Martin and Hogan going already through the minidraft. Even Vic Country I rate more highly than Metro this year, with those Falcons boys particularly impressive with the sheer quantity of quality talents they have this year.

A quick attempt at a Metro best 22:

B: Max Hayes Mark Orr Aidan Franetic
HB: Marcus Bontempelli Tom Cutler Will Maginness
CEN: Joshua Kelly Jake Kalanj Christian Salem
HF: Jack Billings Darcy Moore Ben Lennon
F: Jay Kennedy-Harris Thomas Boyd Cameron Conlon
FOLL: Angus Milham Nathan Freeman Ben Cavarra
BENCH: Jason Cooke Angus Brayshaw Sean McLaren Peter Wright

The squad is probably too tall and I'm sure I've missed a number of names but for this stage this is probably a reasonable enough attempt.

Correct on Goddard. Just edited the above squad for accuracy.

CEN: James Tsitas Lewis Taylor Isaiah Miller
HF: Jacob Chisari Hugh Goddard Jarman Impey
F: Clayton McCartney Dallas Willsmore Nicholas Bourke

I'm a little confused. So if in your opinion neither Scharenberg or Dumont can kick, why are they at picks 3 and 12 in your update? Just based on what other people are saying?

In terms of Dumont, you seem to be basing a lot on the U18 Championships from last year. I remember his disposal efficiency wasn't great in some of those games, but only so much can really be learnt from a stat like that. Because, actually watching him in games paints a different picture. For example, Trent Cotchin is going at 57.5% this year but I would suggest he is a great kick. Patrick Dangerfield is also in the low 50s. But, they get a lot of their ball under pressure. And that's often the case with Dumont. Not saying he is a great kick or anything, but he isn't any different than Wines and I don't think Port fans are complaining there.

And believe me, Scharenberg can kick. I think we'll be on the same page once the Championships start and you get to see the South Australians more.

Decent attempt at the Vic Metro side though, I'd say most teams probably have 15 of their 22 decided on and the next few weeks will provide the rest. The toughest positions to guess are the small defenders/taggers and the like, as well as which underaged players will get a gig.

What are the chances of any jets players getting drafted this year

Mark Orr is a possible. Jake Greiser intrigues me as a big body.

Harrison King, James Sicily, Brett Bewley, Jason Robinson and Harley Armstrong-Weston could be in the mix if they have big seasons.

Very strong looking country side there. Looking forward to seeing how Fraser Fort goes this year after playing several solid games for the Falcons last year as an underager..

You are likely right with the South Australian duo on their kicking. It's probably just in the sample of games I've seen of these that they didn't have that aspect of their games going. I'll be re-evaluating come the time the champs come around so it will be interesting to see how much my views change on these South Australians.

Scharenberg I don't rate top 5 yet, only because I've found his kicking in the games I've seen to be inconsistent with some absolute howlers. Otherwise I've enjoyed his game being that tall utility who just finds the ball so easily and reads the game so well.

Dumont I have in a similar category where I've just seen to many shocking kicks to rate him top 5, but in saying that I've enjoy other aspects of his game and being that strong bodied midfielder if he can continue to win his own footy and keep winning those clearances then I can see him also going very high.

I'm not a big fan of any of the Metro or Country defenders yet, I'm sure there will be a group of them I've overlooked entirely. Just not yet seeing that same strength I saw last year in that specific group.

Boy Country look strong this year.

Country certainly got the deepest team the way I see it. Exceptionally deep midfield group.

Early call but I have Country in the final with South Australia, though I'm backing SA to go all the way with that quantity of top end talent they have.

Boy Country look strong this year.

Tall forwards aren't exactly a strength. Take away Goddard, and there isn't really anyone imposing there. Few medium sized options like Willsmore and the overaged Josh Scott, but nobody you'd be losing sleep over as a full back. I imagine what they'd do differently to Knightmare's team, is to play Fraser Fort at full forward and possibly bring in someone like a Lachlan Devine or Dale Gawley down back. Fort has been impressive up forward so far this year - would be leading the goal kicking if he could kick straight.

I might post a premature look at the South Australian squad tomorrow. But they'd be favourites for mine heading in. Very good depth through the midfield, as well as some promising KPPs. Probably more potential rather than performance in terms of the talls, but nearly everyone has an AFL ready body - particularly the midfielders, who are nearly all around the 185cm mark.

Fair bit of scoring ability in the midfield though. If they can get on top there, Goddard and Willsmore will be more than sufficient at creating a contest and clunking a few marks. I agree they aren't great for KPFs but their midfield depth is unrivalled this year, in my opinion.

Luke McDonald is confirmed as lining up in the championships, will sit out a game of Foxtel Cup and a few rounds of VFL. Wearing #27.

Metro very underrated in this thread.

McDonald, Billings, Kelly, Salem and Lennon have the ability to destroy SA and Country if they win enough inside ball.......

SA have them beat. ;)

The key to the Country midfield will be the outside types. They have a lot of smaller ball winning midfielders, but not the game changers that Metro and SA have on the outside - which is why I actually prefer the Metro midfield. Actually, I think Metro have the more balanced team all round. But as for Country, I really hope Miller gets a chance on a wing, as opposed to the back line. I'd like to see Harry O'Meara get a run too, obviously is a 19 year old but I think he could add a lot.

It's going to come down to Metro vs SA imo.

How much Dunstan, Wilson, Dumont, Aish and Scharenberg go against the outside runners of Metro. If they can win enough inside ball, and starve the runners, then they are a good chance.

If they don't......................... there's absolute daylight between Metro's forward line and everybody else's. McDonald, Billings, Kelly and Lennon is as good as it gets for u/18 football in terms of delivery, they will be feeding them all day if they get the ball from the stoppages.

This Metro side is the sort of team that might bomb out of games, or smash some of the Div 1 sides by 10+ goals if they get a roll on..........

I agree. I think they'll match up pretty well too. SA have a lot of big bodies in the midfield so will hopefully be able to starve the outside midfielders of Metro, but more importantly will match up on Boyd/Conlon probably better than any other team. Our most likely looking KPDs (Giles, Redden, Andruszkiewicz) are all between 194 and 197cm and quite mobile. Plus, the likes of Scharenberg and Buckby are both around the 192cm mark and will zone off all day if allowed to.

Will probably come down to two things...

- whether Metro win enough contested ball to get to those outside types
- whether SA's outside midfielders can capitalise on their strength in the contested battles

As sure as death and taxes is that Bontempelli and Kalanj would swap positions.

Very strong, skilful Metro team with decent depth. Look forward to watching them against SA.

Yep, whats been missed here is the relative sizes of the midfields.

SA have alot of talent, but are a bit on the small side. Dunstan and Dumont are decent sizes, and Scharenberg is big, but the rest are a bit of a mosquito fleet for mine.

McDonald, Bontempelli and Lennon are all around that 6"3 mark and can all run, which leads me to think they might not have an issue winning the inside ball, if they get enough ball to Boyd, Conlon and Moore, they will beat anyone.
