Mundy is 192 Fyfe 190 and Barlow 189 they are tall
I actually thought Barlow was taller than that too.

I'm 189cm with my height recorded by a laser measuring device for insurance purposes.
When I met Barlow I could have sworn he was about an inch taller than me and looked to be a fraction taller than Mundy.

No matter which way you put it, they're tall for mids.

Is Boyd Aish scharenburg the guaranteed top 3? Any chance of scharenburg slipping to the dogs? And would they take him if he was available ?

Hey Knightmare, great work getting the mock draft up and running.

I just don't see the Blues selecting a half back flanker with our first round pick, we have far too many on our list. We'll most certainly be targetting a midfielder with that pick. I have my eye on guys like Crouch, Salem (but they probably won't be there at our pick), Dunstan and Sheed. Are there any other good mids that could fall down the draft boards and land in the Blues' lap in the 2nd round?

Cheers

I think it is the way of the future to an extent with more clubs to have tall midfields.

There will be more Richo to the wings in those key forwards who do a Buddy and play up on a wing. And more Roughead's and Pavlich types who going through the guts. Then those Pendlebury/Mundy sized midfielders to become the norm. You'll see it more and more.

That's why a Bontempelli as one example this year may go earlier than he may otherwise have being a rare tall midfielder at 192cm who can develop that midfield game.

Perhaps a Mitch Harvey this year could be recruited to develop into a poor mans Jarryd Roughead to develop into a forward who may with some of his attributes while we haven't seen him given the opportunity, but I don't see why he couldn't develop the ability to pinch-hit on the ball as a big body with the skills, movement and ability when it hits the deck to pick it up cleanly and be in the contest.

But that Fremantle midfield make anyone look small - having quality size (not only quality KPPs but superior size in each position). It helps.

Its this logic to me that has Sharenberg at #2 , could develop into gun mid. Better fit melb than Aish imo

Not at all guaranteed. Josh Kelly or Jack Billings still in the mix for pick 3 with nothing locked in just yet at least to my knowledge.

It depends on where you place Gibbs, Walker and Yarran.

There will be plenty of midfield options. If Kolodjashnij is taken it's on a perceived best available basis.

In any case I'm exceptionally aware Carlton will add a handful of midfielders and unless Kolodjashnij is there or unless Carlton are really keen on one of Gardiner or McCarthy it's a midfield selection.

I change my draft order weekly so I'm sure there will be continued movement and quite possibly again to that Carlton selection as the order starts to fall into place.

The question with Scharenberg at this stage is that he isn't a proven midfielder/ hasn't played any midfield.

If he was played as a midfielder more perhaps he would go at pick 2. He's a Geelong/Fremantle type selection with both clubs liking those taller types. He's just not quite as well performed and is more Grant Birchall than one of those Fremantle tall type midfielders.

KM- suggestion on the Eagles board of Blake Acres being the best option for pick 6 given his talent and West Coast's need for size, pace and class in midfield.
Do you think he'll ever be a full-time midfielder, and do you think he compares favourably with Bontempelli and Sheed, who are also being talked about?

I see Acres as being more outside as either a wingman or flanker depending on the team need. At pick 6 he's a reach considering we haven't seen enough of him, or against stronger competition anyway.

Crouch/Sheed/Bontempelli are the mids I'd be picking. Crouch and Sheed are the best performed with Bontempelli the better of the unique upside guys who has the opportunity to develop from more a tall flanker at this stage to a midfielder with the signs he's shown.

This is just so wrong on so many levels.

Acres is the complete mid, inside out who can push forward and kick goals.

He'd add two things what West lack the most, class and size.

Hey km,
Seen much of Eddie Morris from Gippsland power? Had a fantastic season, any chance of being a lower/rookie a selection?

been following this draft since 2011

just in the background more so last couple of years with some SFA committments taking my posting time

Love your work as always,

interesting note Ken Hinkley said on 5AA on radio today that he will be very surprised if Marcus Bontempelli would still be there at 13

how much do you look into this, Coaches views on drafts?

And IMO sheed at 16 would be a huge steal, i'm hoping he slides to Port

I totally agree. Acres can play either an inside role or out side role just as good. He can run off the half back and drive the ball inside the 50. He was even put in the forward line to kick goals during the year and he did just that. The difference between Acres and the others is he can play all over just as good or better than the other guys who play just in the midfield. If he goes top 10 then its probably a good pick but if he slides due to his shoulder then a team is going to get a bargain

I have. He's had a strong season and put up some big numbers. He'll have to iron his footskills out but otherwise I think he could be a late/rookie chance with the way he produced through the midfield.

I think Hinkley is on the money. He could go as early as pick 6 with West Coast said to be considering him but otherwise he likely goes somewhere 6-15 if you were to narrow his range down.

Some clubs are more keen on him than others but if he tests/interviews well he's probably gone by that stage.

Coaches don't usually know the draft all that well until the time of the combine but in saying that Port Adelaide have been out of the finals for the past few weeks so I'm sure he has been putting the time in to learn about the prospects and find our who he likes/doesn't like and who he thinks will be compatible with his gamestyle.

I agree with your thoughts on Sheed. It's still unclear to me where inside that top 20 he lands. I'd happily take him top 5. But I'd say the same about Matt Crouch who some are starting to predict might go lower than expected.

KM, any idea who the Suns might pick up if they're not interested in Billings? I'm not really convinced that he's the sort of player we should be going after. Also seems a bit of a flight risk, stating his desire to remain in Melbourne. VM boy to boot!

Would #5 be reaching for Crouch? I think with someone like Crouch in the squad, our inside 'grunt' depth should be complete. In past drafts we've seemed very keen on those mids that can work both ways and known for their tackle count. Highlighted by Martin and Lonergan last year. How is Crouch defensively? If he racks up the tackles, I think we could be keen?

Any whispers on who we're keen on?

Kade Kolodjashnij has played the entire season for Launceston as a high half forward or wing. Looks so much better there than he does at HB.
He is more versatile then he's given credit for. The Birchall comparison probably doesn't help. He can play a Birchall-like half back link up role, but is way more suited to a midfield, wing or forward role than Birchall.

I agree. He's an absolute ball magnet with a real attacking nature when played in the midfield, tends to take it easy a bit at half back though. Has really shored up his kicking, physicality and work in the air in the second half of the season. Perhaps at AFL level he won't have the goal sense or marking ability to really make a forward position his own but as a midfielder with great size, really good speed and endurance and ability to win contested ball and link up for a heap of uncontested ball he looms as our best prospect in years.

Km, who do you think is the best tagged available in 3rd round or more?

Could possibly be. Still think Thurlow and Lonergan from last year have good careers in front of them, and I know you're not as big a Templeton fan as I am (admittedly his end of season form has me slightly worried) but I am pretty excited about what he can be at AFL level too. But Kade is a very well rounded footballer. Be interesting to see out of those four who has the best career in the end.

I would take Crouch at 5 but I'm in the minority and I don't think he'll be considered quite that early. For inside grunt he's the best in this draft. Perhaps not a two way runner yet but he's an excellent tackler who in the TAC will get his 30-45 disposals per game and 5-10 tackles.

Dominic Sheed is another who could be a heck of a get at pick 5 and is another I'd strongly consider.

But more likely other than Billings: Lewis Taylor, Kade Kolodjashnij and Ben Lennon I'd expect to be strong considerations.

Just on this, word is that the Saints will take Aish or Kelly (whichever is available) so Scharenburg should be available at the Dogs pick.

Beat me to my next update. I've had Kelly at three to St Kilda since last weekend.

Km, who do you think is the best tagged available in 3rd round or more?

Not often that a specialist tagger is drafted. It's something often developed as we saw with Cameron Ling who went from a chubby forward into one of the premier taggers.

If I was looking for a tagger I'd consider the big bodied Jansen with his strong body could cause some trouble and really wear you down.

hey knightmare whats your thoughts on bushies captain michael gibbons? any chance to be drafted?

Big time accumulator. Has had a strong season. Not tall and not a great kick are the questions.

A rookie chance but it's such a deep year with a dozen draftable sub 176cm types that it will be a hard year to get drafted.

I like your lions pick Lewis Taylor...we really need a explosive mid who wins the ball. He really looks like the type that will shoot up the charts late though

Lewis Taylor will play round 1 and once he gets in the AFL environment he will thrive. They won't get near him as a small forward. Staggers me where some have him going. Watch the bulldogs pounce.
