It really depends what kind of club you are. Recruiting a 20 year old ruckman may seem like an odd idea, but GWS have most positions filled, so if they feel like they need to go after a ruckman, it makes sense. My worry is that Lobb doesn't seem to offer that much more than some of their other ruckmen. I think a Phillips and Giles combination could work, and given GWS have time on their side, maybe they should chase a younger ruckman.

Look for Thomas Hodgson out of WA. Has played more as a half back this year, but I have this sneaking suspicion that clubs will look to make him into a tagger in the midfield. He has the size and apparenty mindset for it.

His mate Shannahan may surprise a few as well.

Did you see this article on him the other day?:

"Largely unknown big man Rory Lobb has soared into first round calculations despite playing only nine senior games in his first serious season of football in the WAFL.

Swan Districts senior coach Greg Harding described the late-bloomer as "the perfect package", given his exemplary attitude and athleticism, and said "every AFL club is interested in him".

Given his lack of previous football experience, Lobb's emergence has staggered talent-watchers, who halve flocked to Perth to gauge his performance in the past two months."

His form does not warrant a pick that high, at least off what I have seen. More hype than substance. I question his height. He does not look 205cm to me. If he does go that high its purely a roll of the dice and a 'gut feel' more than any empirical evidence.

do Aish and Dumont or any other players invited to the national combine, playing in next weekends SANFL grandfinal still fully participate in this weeks national combine?

Sorry KM again. It looks like Pods is going to retire, would Geelong be intrested in Mitch Thorp at pick 32?

Geelong have a surplus of key forwards.

Hawkins, Kersten, Walker are plenty. Vardy and West can both go forward.

Hamling and Brown can both go forward.

I'd be surprised to see Geelong target Thorp.

If you pick up any mature talls it will be Matt Sully as a key defender after his success this season with your need for key defenders.

Whether they are I do not know.

In the past some have, others haven't.

I don't put any weighting into the draft combine so it's not something I pay as much attention to as others. Sometimes testing can help explain things but it's more the player interviews and that feedback that I'm more interested to hear as an outsider not knowing who many of these guys are as people.

In any case clubs will have a pretty good feel based on testing as to where these fellas stand so it's no no big deal if we don't see them test.

Where do u think dayle garlett will go in the draft?

It's one of those interesting questions this year.

Garlett has the opportunity to get drafted and it only takes one club. It's just not as assured as the media made it out to be at the beginning of the season. If he goes it will be as a late draft or rookie pick I'd expect.

Thoughts on a club picking up Pods as insurance ? or a one year stop-gap ?

I said it before I am not sold on the idea. I didn't get to watch as many geelong games as I wanted to this year so I cannot gauge him.

Would Freo be interested ? He is better than Jessie White but you get only get one year out of him...

I'd have no problem bringing Pods to the Pies as a stop-gap and I'd recommend other clubs look at him as a short term rental. He came into the AFL late and he's still playing 18+ games every year so his body is holding up. He hasn't lost his athleticism and his game isn't predicated on athleticism either as a strong marking deep forward.

He's one of many Geelong are cutting a year early.
Chapman, Hunt and perhaps Corey also still have some left and for teams looking for those types as 1-2 year rentals could be exceptionally handy for the right team.

Did he get delisted!?!?!?

Hey Knightmare , does Mav Weller look like he'll get picked up? Whereabouts would he fit in if he entered the draft?

He would slot in pretty easily into that second round if he was of draft age this year.

It will be interesting to see how he develops next year.

It's been strongly suggested that he along with Chapman, J.Hunt and J.Corey will be delisted with the club looking to give the youth greater opportunity next year.

Geelong's loss. Competition's gain as far as I see it. Any of the four Cats could well receive another opportunity and be of use to a club looking for a player of those various types with all four still playing strong footy this year.

Knight, what do you think about the Swans? Mumford looks likely to leave and with our KPD stocks low, you expect us to grab one of each and then Perris?

It sounds like Sydney do likely pick a key defender. If Darcy Gardiner is there in the 1st round he is a strong chance to be the pick.

Otherwise a Matt Sully would as a mature ager be another potential option who could represent some value as a rookie and potentially make the grade.

There are some other guys who could be considered mid draft but next year is the better year to take your key position players with more quality talls available and I'd recommend coming back then to find that extra long term option.

Sorry mate, I meant Maverick who was delisted by Gold Coast.

Young Lachie would be a 2nd rounder if draft eligable this year.

Maverick is a rookie chance. But far from assured with his improvement in his three years with Gold Coast mild at best.

knight...Kade Kolodjashnij is impressing in the draft combine. Do you see his draft value rising? It is hard to get much footage on him, but any chance he can become a fyfe like player but with a better kick?

The draft combine doesn't concern me. Testing results can help to explain bits and pieces of on field performance but beyond that it doesn't add or remove any value in my eyes anyway to specific draft prospects. AFL clubs put more weighting into testing than I do but I'm more interested in the on field performance and then how they interview and how their personalities check out.

You can be Joel Wilkinson and break the AFL 20m sprint record and still not know how to use it offensively in game to effect as well as Lewis Jetta who may be 0.2 seconds slower so I don't put any value into it.

In saying that clubs do care but I'd say more it affects the draft positions for those marginal talents who are boarderline selections.

Kolodjashnij will still go 5-15 as expected. There has been talk for some time that he has the opportunity to go top 10 so that may help him establish inside that range if a club was strongly considering him and just wanted that extra little bit of re-assurance. But beyond that I can't imagine it would that greatly change things in his specific situation.

Kolodjashnij is much more outside than Fyfe. No chance he establishes that same inside game. He's more a Robert Murphy. Much better kick than Fyfe, but then again not too many guys are worse by foot than Fyfe.
