How far below the VFL is the TSL. Is it a massive difference and if so how can you compare the performances in the TSL to those in the VFL

KM - Would love to hear your comparisons between 2 players of similar height,Build and position
Dion Prestia / Lewis Taylor
Who is the better player at the same age and who has the more chance of becoming elite and who you would take 1st if both available in this draft

Thanks mate

How do you rate Jedd Clothier?

I'm pretty sure he's part of the Essendon NSW/ACT rookie program.

He's a tall midfielder with excellent endurance. Not a great kick though.

Rookie chance.

Very different players.

Dion Prestia is more a powerful Bull of a guy. He's more a straightline running with a lot more power, the stronger inside game and the more penetrating and damaging kick.

Lewis Taylor on the other hand is much more evasive and effortlessly runs around anyone he wants to run around. He's has more of an agile/evasive pace to him but then straightline is equally quick if not a touch quicker again. He's also got the better outside game of the two as someone who finds it earier outside of the contest.

Lewis Taylor was the better players at the same age. Lewis Taylor has the opportunity to become one of the better smalls we've seen in a long time.

Dion Prestia had an incredible breakout season and was one of the absolute driving forces to Gold Coast's improvement this season but Lewis Taylor has something and is not bad either and you'd love to have either on your team.

I'd lean towards taking Prestia just because he's the known quantity and someone who has already broken into his own whereas with Taylor he's more someone where you know who he is but haven't seen him against AFL quality talent just yet. But not much in it and Taylor has the opportunity to be spoken about in that same conversation and possibly a different conversation entirely if he can continue to build on his game.

Tsitas doesn't have any hurt factor or any one thing that seperates him. Sure he's hard and will win his own footy. He just has a 40m kick and isn't going to do any outside damage.

Tsitas will do whatever it takes. For this reason I think he will be a bargain pick up and would be an ideal hard close checking defensive mid. Has all the ingredients of a good stopper or even a small back. His endurance and mental toughness will stand him in good stead. Going to be a good value pick if he slips to the 30's as you still need disciplined role players.

Spot on.
In theory Taylor should be the better player.
But Prestia has shown he is exceptional at AFL level.
Got to take that ATM.

#25 Brisbane (Via St Kilda compensation) - Michael Apeness (VIC – KPF/Ruck)
Height: 199cm, Weight: 101kg, DOB: 28/01/1995
Recruited from: Eastern Ranges
Style: Jonathan Giles
Player comparison:
Range: 20-rookie
Profile: Strong bodied ruckman who has shown some excellent ability up forward as a big marking target when given the opportunity. As a ruckman Apeness isn’t particularly dominant and probably at the next level won’t win the hitout count every week but when he gets his hands to it his hitouts are well directed. He’s not a super athlete but more of a physical player with a real presence to him at his size. Apeness I like most when he’s up forward because of that presence. He’s not only a big body but he can take marks at the highest point and take the contested grabs and marks 1v1.

Hopefully still available for us at #40.

KM you've updated the power rankings and am very happy to see Sam Heavyside in there that for sure. Just curious does this mean your draft will be getting updated soon as well?

Dunno if it's just something you missed or what... but you have Hartung coming to Port at 21... but he's not even in your Power Rankings. Do you personally really rate him that low, or just forgot to put him in?

Hi Knightmare. What are your thoughts on Meyrick Buchanan?
Trawling through old posts I see you had him going to GWS in 2011 (19 I think??) and rumours were that a couple of clubs had committed to him in the 3rd round that year. Haven't seen any games of his since he came back so wanted to know if he's slotted back in easily or not? any chance of going in this draft?

I'll without question update my draft before draft day.

Just a question of of this weekend or next week.

If it's a small update this weekend. If a large update more likely next weekend.

Hartung I'm not a massive wrap for. He's small and he's outside. I'm struggling to see a role for that unless he develops into more a forward but then his run and carry probably isn't going to be as damaging. He's boarderline top 60 for me as someone I have 50-70 guy in my personal rankings.

That said some others rate him inside their top 15s so that's where personal opinion comes into the evaluation.

So I'm not going to penalise him in my phantom draft as my personal rating isn't representative of what clubs think and will do on draft day.

Buchanan I'm not as high on as some others seem to be.

He was spoken about a few years back as a potential top 30 selection and maybe he would have featured there but even then I had him more as a late draft selection.

He hasn't done anything so dominant this year and then after five games got injured so I'd say he probably goes to the VFL next year and will need to earn his way onto an AFL list but with the limited depth this year he isn't out of the mix for selection.

KM have you seen much of Jacob Sharp?

Looks a likely type although he could use a few extra inches.
What are the knocks on his game? Do you seehim getting drafted? Maybe rookie list?

Chances of billy hartung sliding to pick 24?

Possible but most likely gone by that stage.

Sharp has some ability and is draftable. Really nice user of the footy on both sides. Can play midfield or off a back flank well.

He's just perhaps not as dominant as some others and is there more for offensive impact with that defensive side something that may get exposed more at the next level.

He's a late/rookie selection but someone in that range I like more than many others with his footskills/decision making/vision all excellent and something you can work with.

Knightmare is Angus Milham worth a rookie spot for Essendon??

Milham as long as you're happy to invest 6 years in him before he's AFL relevant may be a possible investment for a club as a rookie.

His game even in the TAC is relatively poor at this stage even despite the height disparity between he and the other ruckman in the competition.

That said at his height he's interesting and as someone new to the game and with a willingness to improve he's someone a club if they're ok spending the time on him could invest in.

I'm just slightly concerned about his slight frame and how it will be able to carry weight and whether he will actually develop into anything more than Peter Street.

KM Could you rate 2 players please
(1) Charlie Cameron
(2) Ziggy Alwan

Charlie Cameron is exceptionally quick. An agressive tackler. Breaks the lines. Very clean at ground level with his pickups and has the ability to leap for a mark. The scoreboard impact he proves is relatively low which is the query but he's got some traits and natural talent for someone who hasn't played all his life so he's someone I'd invest in late/rookie.

Alwan is more a small marking forward. He just doesn't have a particularly natural game for a forward and lacks consistency which isn't so great for a mature agers. He does some things well though. He's a strong mark 1v1 and can fly for them. He'll also move it on quickly which I like. Perhaps a club looks at him as a rookie but he wouldn't be on my shortlist.

Is who we will get very different from who you hope we'll get Knighty? o_O

We probably end up taking Bontempelli and Lennon.

I'm hoping for Bontempelli and Acres.

We'll see what happens.

Thanks Knightmare
Also any idea which unlisted players are training with clubs? Sikora is with Essendon I think

Players usually train with teams before the preseason and rookie draft.

I may be wrong but I wasn't aware players could train with teams before the national draft.

I thought so too, but we had Kommer training with us (as well as Fields) before last years national draft, and Sikora is definitely training with us atm

We're probably less likely to see players training with teams before the pre-season draft from now on given that the time between the National and Pre-season draft has dropped from 19 days in 2012 to 6 days this year. Which is bad news for players trying to prove their worth to clubs.
