Tigers' Knobel gesture

RICHMOND may trump Carlton and snare Trent Knobel in Tuesday's pre-season draft.

While the Tigers have allowed their former big man Steve McKee to train at Punt Rd in recent weeks, they are giving strong consideration to using the draft's No. 1 pick for the former Saint ruckman.

Richmond also has the final selection in the draft at No. 8.

Just seven clubs will participate on Tuesday after an examination of each outfit's books by the AFL investigations department.

St Kilda was one club ruled ineligible because it was nearing limits on total player payments. The Saints were told they would need to restrict themselves to 38 players, including veterans Robert Harvey and Justin Peckett.

Seven clubs were determined eligible for the draft: Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fremantle, Kangaroos, Port Adelaide and Richmond.

The Magpies are favoured to take Blake Caracella, the Kangaroos are keen on Lance Picioane, Fremantle wants Jarrad Schofield, Port is considering Ty Zantuck and Essendon might take Justin Blumfield.

Adelaide, Brisbane Lions, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Sydney, West Coast and Western Bulldogs already have full lists for 2005.

AFL club chief executive officers met yesterday in Melbourne and were told former Hawthorn coach Peter Schwab would play a role in the revamped tribunal system.

Hahahaha..

We will have the goose on as the head of the umpires and schwab as a tribunal chief.

Great place to position the rejects.

Maybe the spud dud will be CEO of the AFL next.

Funny how first rate failure can lead to a great administrative career.

If we draft Knobel , put him on an incentive based contract ( i know , he has already named his price ) say............. $100 a kick and $50 for a handball , and at the end of the year he would not have enough to buy my 84 pulsar .

I know we need another ruckman but please , he is useless , why would the saints get rid of him and then chase other ruckmen ? I would put him in the same basket as Mc Kee , but at least he will cost us sweet FA

Knobel doesn't get many possessions but he is a capable ruckman and still has scope for improvement. McKee is more injury prone, not as good a ruckman and has little hope of getting better. If we can afford Knobel, we should get him. He will also be a good replacement for Stafford in years to come.

Knobel is your classic case of a stallwart ruckman, a big bodied player who will always give a contest in the ruck contests.

Unfortunately, that's about all he does.

I would prefer Mckee over Knobel, as he would be cheaper and he can do more around the ground than Knobel.

Other reason is that Simmonds is our No.1 ruckmen, and Knobel is ONLY a ruckmen, he really can't go "rest" in the forward line like other talls very well.

In regards to the rookie draft, the names that i've heard in contention are Rix, Kirkby, Remington and Gilham.

I'd like Kirkby, May/JD Smith and maybe Falovic.

Went to training yesterday.......
First time I've seen McKee join in full training and was pretty impressed. He was paired against Simmonds for most of training and did well.
3rd time I've watched Rix at training and my opinion is that he's not up to it. Good athlete who looks great in the running part of training however doesn't look as comfortable when he has to chase a footy around.
The thing that stands out at training (other than the fast pace now on our list) is our distinct lack of bigger bodied tall players. McKee also has good skills for a big bloke.
I hope we pick him up. Definitely the best ruck option ahead of Knobel, Porter, Rix or some skinny kid who was overlooked in the National Draft and could take 5 years to fill out.

I'm not saying we should draft Rix, his just a name i've heard on a few boards and from a relative connected with the club.

Apparently Wallace rates him, but what i hear from people who have seen him is quite simple, "no".

Two pre-season picks for Tigers
8:43:29 AM Fri 10 December, 2004
Sportal

Richmond will have two selections at Tuesday’s National Bank’s AFL-Pre-Season Draft on Tuesday after the league completed its examinations of each club’s Total Player Payments estimates for 2005.

The 2004 wooden-spooners will have the first and last selections on Tuesday, with two places still remaining on their senior list and are reportedly set to bring ruckman Steve McKee back to Punt Road after five seasons with Collingwood.

Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fremantle, Kangaroos and Port Adelaide are also eligible to take part.

St Kilda is not eligible to take part because the TPP estimates indicate the Saints are at close to 100 per cent of the salary cap already, while Adelaide, the Brisbane Lions, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Sydney, West Coast and the Western Bulldogs have full lists already.

The National Bank’s Rookie Draft will take place 30 minutes after the pre-season draft.

Pre-season Draft
Round One
One: Richmond
Two: Collingwood
Three: Carlton
Four: Kangaroos
Five: Fremantle
Six: Essendon
Seven: Port Adelaide

Round Two
Eight: Richmond

if this is the case id go
selection 1-Kirkby
selection 8-Mckee

cheers!

The other reason is that you don't necessarily want to spend big bucks on a backup player. We basically need a 1 or 2 season bloke on minimum wage who can come in and play 8 games a year if injury strike. Seems a bit of a waste to take on someone like Knobel for that role.

Rix is too old I think, 24 next month. He has been playing as a key defender apparantly. Thursfield, Gilham and Burley are all key defenders training with us. We have another one in Barling there for a couple of weeks as well. Even Kirkby and Young are probably CHBs.

So I would imagine that at least one of our rookie picks will be a key defender. For mine Thursfield, Barling and Burley were the 3 unluckiest fullbacks not to get drafted from Victoria, so am happy with whoever the coaches go for.

If we want our midfielders to get first use of the ball(which we do) ;), then Knobel is the man. He is is taller and can jump higher than Mckee. Knobel actually has a pretty long kick and looks a decent mark. He left St Kilda, but he was good enough to play 20 games this season for one of the best teams going around.

Mckee - looked a bit unfit to me at training. Has good skills when he gets the ball but Simmonds continually beat him in the tap and around the ground in the drills. Rix - great motor and good size and i think has alot of learning left in him.

Id prefer kids.

In reality we will get McKee as a back up, with the no. 1 pick.

However, id rather us get types.

Ruory Kirkby
Heath Grundy
Beau Wilkes

Caroline Wilson reckons Knobel will be the first one called out on tuesday. and she is usually on the money.

-This column has devoted copious amounts of space to Greg Miller over the years and it is fitting as the year draws to a close that we do so again as football's popular and charismatic wheeler-dealer puts the finishing touches on yet another deal.

While the industry remains baffled at Miller's unorthodox and - in our view - unworkable move onto Clinton Casey's election ticket, the Richmond football boss of two years has finally offloaded the problematic Ty Zantuck and looks to have picked up another ruckman, Trent Knobel, in the process.

As the votes flow in to decide who will be running the politically torn club after Christmas, Miller has convinced Casey that the Tigers can afford the 24-year-old former Saint at a base of around $160,000 and potentially $210,000 depending on the number of senior games he plays next year. This is despite Richmond's massive loss this year and the belief by some current board members that the club should consider putting out its hand for funds from the AFL's soon-to-be restructured competitive balance fund.

Subject to AFL approval, Knobel will join Richmond via its first pick in the pre-season draft thanks to some freed-up funds that have emerged via a sweetheart deal between the Tigers, Zantuck and the AFL - although the relationship between the first two parties has been anything but sweet. Knobel is a risk but a significantly better proposition than Steve McKee and his problematic groin. McKee was reportedly told on Friday he would not be returning to Tigerland.

Draft gloom for McKEE
12 December 2004 Sunday Herald Sun
By JON RALPH

RICHMOND has told former Collingwood ruckman Steve McKee it will not select him in the pre-season draft and is seeking clarification with the league about fitting Trent Knobel's contract into its AFL-approved budget.

The club told McKee yesterday it did not feel his troublesome groin could stand up to the rigours of the AFL and it would look elsewhere in Tuesday's draft.

The Tigers expect an AFL decision by tomorrow, which would clear the way for them to draft Knobel to the last spot on their list.

The club is well within the salary cap, but after the AFL had its accountants scrutinise its vastly scaled-back projections for 2005 it is keen to run any variations by the AFL.

Knobel has put a price on his head, but his two-year contact is only slightly above what the Tigers would have paid McKee.

If, as expected, the AFL approves Richmond's offer to sign Knobel for two years, it will swoop in before Carlton, which has flagged its intention of drafting the former Lion and Saint.

The Tiger move leaves McKee in limbo, with the majority of clubs having pledged to sign particular players.

With first selection in Tuesday's rookie list, Richmond is expected to take Ruory Kirkby, a key position player from Echuca desperately unlucky to be overlooked in the national draft.

If you can afford him, you've got him.
