The Brisbane Lions have welcomed a new crop of exciting young talent to its list on night two of the 2025 Telstra AFL National Draft at Marvel Stadium.

Western Australian duo Koby Evans and Cody Curtin joined the Lions at pick 38 and 43 respectively, followed by Queenslander Tai Hayes at Pick 44.

...

The Lions opened the night drafting Evans, a 188-centimetre hybrid forward from Perth, after West Coast chose not to match a bid for their NGA talent.

Evans is known for his blistering pace and strong goal sense, who despite some injuries during his underage campaign still showed his potential.

“We are super excited to add Koby to our list because he is a very talented player,” Conole said.

“He had to overcome adversity this season and continued to work through this.

“Upon resumption of his injury he was outstanding at Colts level and made his League debut late in the season.

“He is a longer-term option, and we look forward to seeing his development as a Brisbane Lion.”

“I had a bigger picture, because I knew West Coast were going to match Tylah’s bid wherever that was, because they had had Tylah in front of me,” Evans told The West Australian.

“I kind of already knew that they weren’t going to match it, so it was just what club was going to call my name now.”
“I’m stoked, over the moon. I was at home with family and friends (watching the draft). My mum started crying,” Evans said.

“I love to tackle so I love watching Josh Dunkley, I’d love to learn off him.”

Fresh Brisbane draftee Koby Evans has revealed he was not surprised West Coast Eagles did not match the Lions’ bid for him, but is over the moon to be heading to the reigning premiers.
Evans was a member of West Coast’s Next Generation Academy, but the Eagles did not match Brisbane’s bid for the midfielder, paving the way for him to become a Lion with pick no.38.
The Perth product trained with the Eagles throughout this season, but battled poorly-timed injuries — including an ankle injury sustained in his second senior WAFL game which he is still rehabilitating.

With the Eagles having a handful of academy products sought after by other clubs like Charlie Banfield (who went to St Kilda) and Tylah Williams, Evans admitted he was not shocked to not end up at West Coast.

“I kind of already knew that they weren’t going to match it, so it was just what club was going to call my name now.”
And Evans could not be more thrilled to be heading east to link up with the Lions and learn off their bevvy of talented on-ballers, including Lachie Neale, Will and Levi Ashcroft and Josh Dunkley.

“I love to tackle so I love watching Josh Dunkley, I’d love to learn off him.”

Evans’ draft stock has been hindered by back and ankle injuries which have cost him a chunk of the year, and said he was glad to finally reach the light at the end of the tunnel after worrying the ailments may hurt his chances of being drafted.
“I’m buzzing. Obviously, it’s been a tough year, so it was very unexpected, and I’m forever grateful for this opportunity,” he said.

“I spoke to all my coaches and injuries are part of football, it happens, so I just had to look at the positive side of things and did everything I can, because it’s not going to be all stars and perfect.”
“’m still rehabbing my ankle, so that’s just been keeping me busy and stuff like that. I’ve been keeping my mind off it really in all honesty.
“It’s been a bit up and down. The nerves only really hit from Tuesday.”
