Not sure anyone exactly knows but Bains has talked about trading down to a sub-10 pick. If that's a possibility then we might need to hang onto all our picks to give maximum flexibility to craft the deal.
Bains said both the Bulldogs and Saints are waiting to see what the dps end up like.

Deal is done, just waiting for the best outcome for both clubs

Unlike Essendon, the woodenspooners, the premiers are not up themselves and are fair to deal with.

Looks like an immediate best 18 player to me

Armitage also under pressure

Hopefully the competition for spots makes the entire midfield group spike in development

He may not have a ceiling much higher than he is at now, but its still higher than what we've seen from Minchinton , Sinclair , Mackenzie, Wright, so it gives the younger guys a bar they need to raise themselves above.

Sandy are going to be awesome next year.

Hopefully Koby can shake off any niggles he had. If he and Steele are fit we might get a bit of midfield depth with players who get a bit of the ball.
The last couple of yrs our depth players like Saunders, Minchi and Curren who got a game at various times all really struggled to get many possessions.
Pressure is great and causing turnovers is a big part of our game. But it would be nice to have a couple more mids who just go and get the ball.

I am still concerned about out outside game though.

We have a lot of inside mids and look at the gf Sydney had a great inside midfield brigade yet got destroyed on the outside by the dogs and even 3 weeks earlier got destroyed by GWS
An inside quartet of Armitage, Dunstan, Steele and Stevens means Steven, Acres, Newnes, Ross, Billings, McKenzie, Gresham etc can all push to more outside roles. It also means we can draft for speed and class.

Add Freeman to that if we can get him fit, and note that Stevens himself isn't a plodder and we're doing ok.

I keep reading that we've got too many inside mids yet we were ranked near the bottom for contested ball, so either we aren't playing enough or the ones we have aren't good enough (at winning the ball not in general).

We need to start winning it more often to allow the likes of Savage, Roberton, Montagna, Newnes, Ross, Billings, Webster etc to get on the end of it more often instead of defending so much because the other team won the ball. When that starts happening is when we'll start moving up the ladder quickly.

BINGO !!!!

Ross, Dunstan, Acres, Weller, Minchington don't win as much contested ball as Leigh Montagna or Daniel Wells.
We totally rely on Armitage and Steven.

a) Tom Rockliff won more contested possessions per game than any StKilda players. Significantly more than Jack Steven.
b) First year player Rhys Mathieson won more contested possessions per game than Armitage ( our 2nd best ).
c) Our third best , Dunstan, won about as much as Nick Dal Santo or Stephen Hill.
d) Our 4th best, Seb Ross, had similar stats to Koby Stevens.

Armitage was down on his 2015. Maybe he can get back there.
Dunstan. averaged 8, 7, and 7 contested possessions per game each year. 8 was impressive for a first year player.
Seb is showing some runs of games where he gets more than 10. At least showing some improvement.

Its not just a matter of big body. Caleb Daniel wins more ball than most of our guys.

Neither is Brandon White....

We beat the Dogs on the outside after beating them inside last time we played.

You want to see outside. Go back and watch what we did to Melbourne twice and Carlton second time.
Smadhed them on the spread and ball movement killed them.
We have pace with Steven,Gresh, Savage and Webster. McKenzie is also quick.

Those are some very damaging comparisons.

Hopefully stay fit. Helps us improve the team as a whole.

If he can develop his game by at least 10% then he will be an awesome addition rather than a stop gap as some have pigeon holed him.
