Good point.

How do you value Smith? Similar range?

Yes. History and commonsense shows that players of Smith's and Stevens's age and experience are not 1st rounders but are better than a 3rd rounder. Many clubs see their 2nd round picks as being expendable. Most of those finishing reasonably high on the ladder are quite happy to trade them out for a known quality unless they have someone specific in mind, as they know the chances of picking up real quality beyond say pick 30 is questionable.

Can any of the West Coast fans tell me what's up with this guy? At the start of the year I heard a few saying he would be in line to get a RS nomination, but he's barely played at all.

Injury? Out of form?

What would the Eagles want for him? Suns are short on inside mids. Wouldn't mind having a look at him, so long as he's not continually breaking down.
I must say I disagree with most of the posts from WCE suppoters here. I've watched Stevens train and play and have a big wrap for him. This is the first year he has been able to do a full pre season and he has earned a call up but whenever an opportunity arises he is used as the sub. He hasn't disgraced himse;f on these occassions but it seems to me that the selectors have preferred Swift in terms of opportunities and for the life of me, I can't understand why. Given that players all get specific roles these days I can only guess that he is not quite playing the role he is allocated and as someone else says, it has been difficult to fit another midfielder into the side. In my view though, Srevens takes a strong mark, runs to position well and is a good kick without being elite as a kicker. He certainly playes the game hard and would be a great aquisition for someone looking for a good midfielder as he will improve rapidly given experience.

Smith on the other hand has proven himself at AFL level but has probably been passed a bit by Brennan who just gives his all while Smith can look a bit disinterested at times. Both are quality players.

All the above is about right - but the OP asked for why he hadnt been playing and what he would be worth in a trade. So what would YOU expect to receive for Stevens and Smith if they decided they wanted out ?

He is hardly worth as much as some West Coast supporters seem to think. He has played only 14 games in 3 years and can't break into the Eagles midfield, which frankly is probably their weakness.

I wouldn't give anything more than a Pick in the high 30's if that.

Fair enough! I guess I haven't thought too much about it but I think Stevens is a valuable footballer who, I think, was the captain of the Vic country team and was consequently taken ay a fairly high draft pick. I have to admit he slid a lot lower than was anticipated as a lot of journo's had him in the top 10. I also think some other team posters underestimate how hard it is to get into the EAgles midfield as there seems to be some sort of plan in place.

To my mind the best scenario for WCE and probably the AFL is for him to be used, possibly along with Smith, as part of the mini draft which was created for just this reason. Otherwise I can see him going at about mid second round given that this year most clubs will have earlier picks as the majority of top picks haven't been reserved as they have the last 2 years for the introduction of GC and GWS

Neither Macaffer nor your third round pick would have any value to West Coast.

Reality is that being a uncontracted player and still finding it difficult to cement a spot after 3 years, a third round pick will be about as good as you can expect to receive.

That may well be true. But it doesn't change the fact that a fringe player coming off a knee recon and a third round pick have no value to us.

If he wants to leave and we get nothing that's ok. We did it McKinley, to help him go where he wanted.

Were they re-occuring injuries? Is his body made for Aussie Rules?

He has been injured a helluva lot since he got drafted IIRC.

He had OP when he was drafted but the couple of problems he's had this year have been impact injuries, not at all uncommon for a guy who's constantly at the bottom of packs. One was a concussion from memory and the most recent injury is listed as a "glute".

Really i don't think he is worth much more than a 3rd rounder. Looking back in history players like Houli only got offered 3rd rounders and i think for memory kennendy went to the swans for a 3rd as well, while they had shown alot more promise at AFL level. I think west coast would be very lucky to be offered a 2nd rounder and would jump on it at any chance.

Maybe we package him to stkilda along with Strijk?
Hell no to Strijk. Wouldn't even take him for nothing at this point.

Why do Richmond fans keep offering up Luke McGuane whenever a decent player is up for trade? Do they think that because he's back in the team we've all forgotten he's a spud? Pretty sure I saw him miss another goal from 3m out on the weekend.

Haven't seen much of Stevens so it's hard for me to comment, but we look pretty good for inside mids going forward so unless Stevens is going to be an absolute star of the competition it's probably not worth trading for him. Particularly if he isn't a great kick.

Did you even read the posts in this thread?

I'm not Koby Stevens' biggest fan, but I can appreciate the value he'd hold to any team in need of a solid young inside mid capable of a decade of service (which I'd imagine is most teams). He's not particularity quick or skillful, but he's strong, versatile, a good size and a decent overhead. Not to mention his cleanness in congestion. I'm personally annoyed with how he's been managed, but our midfield lineup is notoriously inflexible and spots only become available due to injuries/suspensions.

I'd be surprised if we're offered anything within the top 30 for him though. At this pick he'd be an absolute bargain. Perhaps even more so than Ebert to Port last year. You think we would've learned after that episode

I personally would look at a direct swap with a young West Australian. Myers or Lucas?

No he was injured when he was drafted, his injuries are often caused by him getting himself cleaned up. Like in Round 19 when he played pretty much half a game.

Stevens will command more in a trade than Smith. AFL list managers aren't as stupid as people around these parts and will honestly reflect Stevens value. Which is higher than most of this years second round prospects.
