Annan Says U.S. Should Close Gitmo Prison
http://news.yahoo.com/fc/World/Guantanamo_Detainees
UNITED NATIONS - Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Thursday said the United States should close the prison at Guantanamo Bay for terror suspects as soon as possible, backing a key conclusion of a U.N.-appointed independent panel. White House spokesman Scott McClellan rejected the call to shut the camp, saying the military treats all detainees humanely and "these are dangerous terrorists that we're talking about."

Note that at no time did either independant panel members or Kofi visit Guantanamo before rendering their verdict! They're psychic! Nor did they recommend where terrorists are suppose to go! Can we send them to Kofi's home...will he make room for 'em?

Bravo Scott McClellan...it's none of Kofi's business anyway! Alas...yet more UN stuff we can ignore...Hey Kofi...how 'bout them parking tickets? Any chance of paying?

So how does this reflect on Kofi?

In response, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said that "sooner or later" the camp will have to close, but added that he did not agree with all elements of the latest report.
And:

The US invited the UN to the camp last year after years of requests, but refused to grant the investigators the right to speak to detainees in private.
This is like refusing to let your landlord do an inspection of your flat until you've cleaned up the mess you made.

Or , heavan forbid IEA inspectors not being allowed to inspect nuclear facilities.

Yet we have a nation prepared to bomb another nation because of it.

Hypocrisy lives

U.S. Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld ripped Kofi Annan a new one today about the U.N. leader's asinine comments about Gitmo! I hope Kofi resigns....AND PAYS HIS NYC PARKING TICKETS!

Rumsfeld also rightly said that Al Qaeda has better PR! Exactly... most of the world's media has terrorist sympathies!

rumsfeld is a liar and has no credibility
he should stick to losing wars.
he was the secretary of defence when the US got but kicked in vietnam after murdering 2 million odd people
now he is the secretary of defence while the iraqis fight for freedom from US occupation.
lied about white phosphorus, and WMDs.
better PR? he's just afraid of the truth.

I have noticed that the only people I see on the net who are critical of Kofi or the UN in general are American.

It's not just here, I visit a few other (more international) websites.

There is something in that.

I don't think Kofi anan is that great but he's not the monster the americans think.

Much worse... the U.N. investigation panel was invited to visit but declined!
And tell us why.

Because they weren't allowed to talk to any detainee.

If they are terrorists , charge them

4 years and NO charges..bit slow even for your mob don't you think?

1. Firstly, Annan did more for the world than the Bush administration put together, even with the oil-for-food scandal.

2. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to gather that the guantanamo bay prisoners are being abused. I know that and I haven't been to south or north America. Then again, I'd never link the people who support these kind of abuses with the intelligence of a brain surgeon.

3. How can Scott McClellan make an objective statment on Guantanamo bay when he is involved with the adiministration which carries out this practice?

4. The relevance of parking tickets to prisoner abuses is miniscule. If the worst that people did in this world was not pay their parking tickets, then this world would be alot safer. Then again, some people see paying money to the local athorities more important than protecting the rights of individuals. Small values for small minds.

U.N. investigators WERE INVITED to visit Gitmo...the only requirement was that THEY COULD NOT SPEAK TO DETAINEES without guard...U.N. inestigators decided NOT TO VISIT then wrote report condemning Guantanamo WITHOUT HAVING VISITED FACILITY! Kofi boy then calls for closing Gitmo...letting terrorists free! THIS IS MADNESS! Kofi boy needs to go...

Thousands of media have visited Guantanamo Bay and they all have the same assessment... detainees are well cared for...no abuse whatsoever...

The reason these detainees cannot be charged is that they are not soldiers of any nation...not covered by Geneva Conventions....not battlefield combatants...many have sworn through repeated statements to cause and recause terror and terrorism to achieve their ends.. .To release such people from Gitmo would be reckless endangerment...Would you fly on plane if you knew one of these terrorists was on it?

Kofi boy is sympathetic to terrorists... that is why terrorists are winnning the hearts and minds of the incompetent...

We need a stronger anti-terrorism leader of the United Nations...Kofi boy needs to go...

ITN is right we need a UN which is stronger in standing up to the largest sponsors of terror in the world, that is standing up to the USA, China and Russia.

for too long these three nations have caused untold misery across the world and in their nations and the nations they hold by force for innocent people.

the sooner the power of Veto is stripped from them and the brits and french the better it will be for everyone.

I'm thinking of setting up a 12-step, group-therapy organisation in the US., to help its residents overcome this fear of the U.N. At this stage, I reckon California would be the place to start it up. I forsee it being a huge money spinner, with branches in all major cities.

I think I'll call it, 'Kofi Anon'.

The U.N. was invited and would have been allowed to speak to any detainee they wished, but not alone... that was the only proviso...

If you go to a zoo and look at the animals without any sound you might think they were humane too - regardless of whether they actually were. Interesting that the link you posted also included a view of the Red Cross- who DID visit, rather than just view the exhibits:

"The International Committee of the Red Cross, the only independent group allowed to visit the detainees, issued a rare public rebuke of conditions in October. It and other groups contend the prolonged detention has harmed detainees' mental health. Some critics, however, charge that is the result of harsh interrogation techniques....Twenty-one detainees have tried to kill themselves 34 times, the most recent attempt coming last January."

I suppose Abu Ghraive was just an Iraqi version of "Friday night Games" too??

It's bad enough that you don't read all of other people's links- but it seems you don't even read all of your own!
