Kane Cornes had a few blunt observations about Sam Maclure's nominated A Graders of the competition this morning on SEN, going as far as to suggest Sam hadn't watched footy in two years.

I'm not sure about some of Kane selections either...

Here are their respective lists, with some added value - my personal analysis of who from their lists should be regarded as an A Grader (highlighted in Green) going into the 2025 season, with 5 additional players I feel they both overlooked (I have landed on 40 A Graders):

The only common selection I had to have a good think about is Charlie Cameron - but I think he's done enough to scrape in (conversely, Papley just misses out).

I don't expect a player like Dangerfield to play enough footy in 2025 to have an 'A Grade season', though when he plays I expect him to still be very good (refer to his impact when he played in 2024).

What are your thoughts - who have we all missed?

There's not a chance 2024 Charlie Cameron was ahead of Stengle (or even close), likewise concerning Dangerfield or Stewart over Holmes.

Parts of the lists read out like a 2020-2021 entry.

Never thought I'd defend a West Coast player but why did Kornes pass on McGovern when selecting one from each team, only to select him later?
Is he really that far behind Gulden and Weitering as an AFL player?
McClure didn't even fit him in because he had too much Taylor Walker in his team.

Idiots.

Nah, that's just the way I grouped them (and how it was shown in the article), to show the common picks first, and then the unique picks from each of them.

Walker and Dangerfield? Please.

Both are still capable of A grade football as most elite players are always capable of until they retire, in patches, but seriously when it gets to the point where they - in Dangerfield’s case obviously - have to be managed through the season and within games to make sure they are having maximum impact, they aren’t an A grader anymore. They are an impact player who you want to have the most effect possible for as little detrimental effect on their body

Andrew Brayshaw, H Young, S Bolton, are 3 Freo players who are at the very least no worse than plenty of the listed players. Bolton just got traded for 2 x rd 1 picks, that is not the price for a B Grade player.

Why is D Houston better than J Sinclair. A team just paid picks 7 & 28 for 28yo D Rioli & 4 late picks. That says he is a top class half back, which he is.

Why is Josh Kelly not on these lists?

Why is Ed Richards any worse than Max Holmes?

Tom Dekoning is a fair way short of franking his class as a ruck.

Touk Miller with any sort of fair run at it is better than loads of the listed players.

K Pickett is as good as any of the small forwards listed.

Harley Reid will waltz onto this list this year, if we are anticipating T Dekoning then Reid has to be on there.

If we are going by form, where is Adam Treloar, he had a terrific 2024.

Typical populist lists.

Holmes received the most coaches votes and won the BnF for the 3rd best team in the comp in 2024. In fact only 8 players in the comp received coaches votes more times than Holmes did. He received them 14 times, compared to 6 for Richards.

Stengle had a much better season than Bolton, by the way.

Meh

that ends this year , never to occur again

Probably. It doesn't change what happened in 2024 though.

Stengle has had 2 AA level seasons in the past 3 years (his 2024 was as good as 2022), 169 goals/assists total. Greene has a stronger form line in that time, but few other small forwards would.
Stengle played average in finals from memory.

Tom Lynch, Shai Bolton , Daniel Rioli and Harley Reid are ones they both missed
When is the last season Tom Lynch put together an 'A grade year'?

Same too with Shai Bolton.

Daniel Rioli a good player, and had his best season in 2024, but a long way from the top 40 players in the competition.

Harley Reid will be there one day, but too early to call it for 2025.

In comparison to Stengle, Bolton has 155 goals/assists across 2022-24, in a mostly poorly performing team. He also has 300 inside-50’s to 210 and 145 clearances to 80 as he plays a decent amount of time midfield… he has played 1 less game than Stengle in this time.

Much easier to produce quality numbers as a small forward in a strong team.

In the Geelong team of 2023 that missed finals, Stengle averaged 11.4 touches and 2.0 goals/GA, 2.8 I50’s and 0.7 clearances.

In the wooden spoon team of 2024 Bolton averaged 16.4 with 2.1 goals/GA, with 3.8 I50’s and 3.1 clearances.

Bolton was ridiculed for his 2024 season … but vastly superior to Stengle’s 2023 … small forward in a sh*te team is bloody hard work.

So the fact Bolton almost matches Stengle’s scoreboard impact despite playing significant midfield minutes and being in a much poorer team from 2022-24 shows his superiority as a player.

If Freo make top-6 as I expect they will Bolton will absolutely dominate.

He’s definitely an A-grader.
