Theyve never had a real standout - Gooch is their highest run scorer...

Thats why I think Cook can get to the top.
?????

Hammond, Hutton, Compton, Barrington, Boycott, Gooch, Gower.......

Check out Hammond's record before the war, against some pretty decent Australian teams too (not to mention everyone else's).

Hutton, Compton etc did alright back in the day, ditto boycott.

I'd probably agree Cook is their best, most consistent batsmen, but Pieterson if he fires is far and away the most damaging.

Pieterson going leaves them very reliant on Cook and Trott, as Strauss is in fair decline (Windies series aside) and Bell has never really made the step up to number four, not to mention they've never really replaced Collingwood at this point. They have some batsmen slaying the County Championship but they remain untested at the top level.
Think you might be referring to James Taylor who played the last test. I know Sachin is small, but he dwarfs this bloke.

The likes of Tendulkar, Bradman, Ponting, Kallis, Pollock, Lara - they are in another league compared to the likes of Boycott, Gooch and Gower...plodgers of the highest order!

Gooch is Englands highest run scorer, but only 12th on the all time list. And Alec Stewart is second!
Gower averaged 44 at a strike rate of 50 - hardly world beating. Boycott 47.

Hammond, yes a splendid player - still he averaged 40 less than Bradman!

Gooch is Englands highest run scorer, but only 12th on the all time list. As for averages, Sutcliffe from the 1920's is the highest yet is way down the order too.

Gower averaged 44 at a strike rate of 50 - hardly world beating.
Can only play who's around. As you say, Sutcliffe (forgot about him) and Hammond's averages are sensational. They played on uncovered wickets as well. They also didn't play anywhere near as many tests then, you can't use the argument about where they are on runs scored, it's just not compatible now.

You definetly can for more modern play players IMO. The likes of Gooch, Atherton, Stewart, Gower dont go near Ponting, Tendulkar and Kallis. Personally I think Cook is on track to at least supercede these Englishmen and go further, perhaps making a name as a long standing captain in the 5 day game too, taking leading run scorer as he goes. He'd be one of the first picked in my world XI.

You're using a horrible way to judge all time greatness - most runs scored and discounting anything before 1980. we all know England doesn't have an all time great batsman post 1980, but there's no way Cook will leave a mark on the game like the marks Grace, Hobbs, Hutton and Hammond left

Most of the comments on the BBC website seem to be criticising the EWCB, but I say, good for them. It's not often you see sports administrators (in any sport) show a bit of backbone these days. Fair play to them.

As Jonathan Agnew rightly points out, he isn't Chris Gayle, who has the excuse that he's playing in India cos the Windies are to too skint to pay him, likewise some of the Kiwis. England players are well-paid, and if he can't make that his priority, **** him.

I don't follow international cricket all that closely so I am wondering if I missed KP doing something really stupid to generate all the hate on this board for him.

I agree that it was crap of him to text the Saffers about his own teammates during the match - even if in jest - but it strikes me that the hatred for him on this board is too palpable to be just for that.

Ask yourself this: Why is Clarke hated so much on here?

There is another twist in this - the South African Manager has come out and made a statement saying there was nothing in the texts exchanged between KP and the Saffers. They have not been asked to provide anything and so will not be making any further comment.

It's a truly bizarre situation. I don't think England can win without him and recent performances would suggest that they win when he fires.

KP pobviously has a few issues but have the ECB jumped the gun here?

Lot's of pressure on two inexperienced players in Taylor & Bairstow now.
