What a shocking move ! KP retires from limited over cricket. Its like gayle vs wicb all over again this time KP vs ECB, KP wanted to play world t20 but for that ECB demanded him to be available for a whole season of ODI. He retired from both ODI and t20, an other gun player retiring from national duty to play in t20 leagues and tests.

if IPL/Cl20/BB are the reason for this, then it makes one wonder if such gun players from national sides keep retiring prematurely, would the supply of exciting and proven international gun players be active, i mean with out a roboust international game the t20 leagues would mean next to nothing, even in India.

He had serious love for the IPL. Trying to free himself up for those sorts of tournaments I suppose.

will take a while but you would have to think that international cricket will suffer if these exoduses keep occurring.

i personally think that this is the way to go in the future, less international cricket and more team and club type cricket.

players should have to play for domestic clubs to qualify for the international matches, it could give it a soccer type feel and the champions league could be a fantastic showpiece with 2 teams from each nation being represented in t20, ODI and test match world championships

Since its clear that Test and T20 are the skill changing formats, ODI should be reserved for WC only.

It would be even better if we settle down with dominant t20 seasons, Summer of Eng,Spring of Aus,and Winter of Ind perfect time for cricket all around.

International games should be only tests, and world cups of limited overs format, that would make the 50 over wc super precious, and club games $$.

Unfortunately International Cricket can't pull back from the cesspool of cash and the BCCI has no intention of parking the IPL.

Players aren't robots, you have to have a break at some stage. Next year the Australian team faces 250 days on the road, not a lot if you have a family which KP has.

Something has gotta give, fortunately at this stage, England, SA and Australia have enough cash to keep most players in the international system. Countries under this level don't and you will see more Gayle like scenarios where players opt out of international cricket.

BCCI controls world Cricket now, ICC is unable to do anything about it and both know it.

Wow, didn't see this coming. My first thought was IPL/$$$/KPvECB. First time I've actually opened my Cricinfo Daily email in ages. Still, I wouldn't be suprised if he comes crawling back in the future.

Dissapointed that it takes a gun player out of international cricket, but for the last 1-2 years I've only really watched Test matches anyway, so not a huge deal.

I agree with what someone above said, the ODIs should be reserved for the WC only. That would be fantastic and give it much more meaning.

What baffles me most is the ECB's stand on this. If KP was dropped from the ODI side, he could play in the w20/20. But because he chose to retire, he's retired from both formats. Why are they linked? Considering England were the pioneers of having a completely different lineup for t20's.

Yep, exactly. Wouldn't it be great if there was an Australian season with weekly clashes, doesn't have to be a long season, 10 weeks or so.

One test tour and one test series hosting a year, club commitments in and around that, world cups every 4th year.....the first time since forever there would be no cricket overload

Yes, it seems unneccesarily harsh to force players to choose all or nothing when it comes to the short formats. I can't see how it helps the squad strength for T20, he'd be the first picked for me.

Out of all the English batsmen, I enjoy watching KP the most. I don't blame him at all for doing this. He has pointed out before how much he hates being away from his wife on long tours. This will probably make it easier for him to manage that part of his life as well.
