There has been a lot of hype surrounding Judd, Hadley, Armfield, pfieffer and browne (not so much ellas), yet for some time Kreuzer has really dropped of the scope.

This may be because there is so much else to get excited about, the new players are going to release other players (the much vaunted knock on effect), we are just disappointed with him, don't think he will have an impact, etc.

However this guy is big, quick, huge tank, good around his feet and yes a potential ruck man. The guy was taken with the expectation that he was a super elite talent AND a ruck.

So this guy wont step into the ruck, we have hampo, cloke, ackand, even setanta, aisake.......but he will probably play as a forward or do his brick down back.

How exciting is this kid going to be ? I really think people have just let the fact we have a new number one draft who is a super talent slide right over them. Murph, Gibbs sent people crazy, the hype around walker was even bigger, yet kreuzer seems to be ho hum.

Massive talented bloke slotting into teh forward line, sounds better the JK, better than setanta for sure.

Your thoughts.

Agreed 99%, don't think big fellas are as visceral or exciting as a quality mid, but we potetnially have a 200cm kid as versatile as Kosi with greater footy awareness/nous and better below his knees, on our hands. Less exciting because he will take some more time to adjust to AFL footy than a gun mid, but not as much as most ruckmen.

By the way, who the heck is ellas??

I don't expect him to set the world alight this year. Has to learn the trade in the Big league first. An injury free year of development will set him up well!

We probably got over the excitement of having the number one pick again for the third time in a row.

It has it's pros & cons about it (being a #1 pick).

Pros: Best talent available, huge tank, tall, athletic, quick and footy smarts etc etc

Cons: Too much pressure & nerves

Kreuzer seems to be settled in already, which is an awesome sign. What we have seen at training is that we made the right choice. It's good that that there isn't alot of media hype surrounding him and putting him off his game. So I'm glad there isn't all this hype around him!

Don't know whats been getting through to London, but the wraps on Kruezer are massive. Dont have the detail to hand, but can recall a stat claiming how many articles he had written about him in the lead up to the draft, and it was absolutely unprecedented for a #1 draft pick.

Skills, engine, and overall abilities are all understood to be first rate, but I think the general consensus is we need ot take it slow, put some muscle on that frame, and give the kid a year or two to evolve.

My brother knows his TAC coach and says he is the best talent he has seen come through the club for the past 5 years. Not a bad wrap.
But I wouldn't mind seeing him him play up forward to start.
Hopefully Cloke and Hamson can step up to play permanent ruck for now and give the kid another year or 2 to develop rather than burn him out.

I think he will be an awesome player in the future, however I don't expect much this year.

I can't remember many big guys having major 1st seasons in the AFL.

I think people are slowly coming around to the realisation that tall prospects generally show little early on. Reiwoldt didn't play a game in his first year, Franklin was patchy at best, Roughead looked out of his depth, and if you look at Hawkins, Gumbleton, Hansen and Thorp - all exceptional talents from 06 - there's not a lot of return there. To further add to that, Kruezer gets the best out of himself with workrate, so while he doesn't have the strength or speed of the game he'll just look like he's running around in circles albeit continuously. Young players who have some sparkle or flash generally get noticed early, guys like Hampson come on to the scene and contest a ball up and jump half a meter over their opponent and you hair stands on end, but in actuallity Hammer is probably behind Jacobs and Kruezer in being a real footballer.

Kreuzer has dropped off the radar for one reason only.
Judd.

Whenever Pagan was interviewed last summer the next name mentioned was Gibbs..........well, actually it was Mitchell, but the next name he responded to was Gibbs.......and the year before it was Murph.

Kreuzer has had his one big day - first training session, where in the interview the press asked him about?..........meeting Judd.

The media have Judd on the brain and Kreuzer is reaping the benefit by not having huge expectations publically placed on him.

As for posters on this forum, there have been some positive reports, but I think most accept that as a ruckman we have low expectations of him in his first year, which we hope he will exceed, but won't be upset if he doesn't.

I hope he plays at least 7-8 games, but if he plays from round 1 its because he has earnt it during the NAB cup.:thumbsu:

Thanks Bluebear, this is kind of what I was thinking - Judd.

But it is also worth considering how little is mentioned of him in our constant assessment of our forward and back structure. I mention this as I see him as not being ruck ready for some time, and we other better options, so can we look at him as a forward option for the next couple of years.

if so, how does this figure into the forward structure,

Fish, Gibbs, Kreuz, Houlihan, Edwards, Hartlett etc.

I think the answer is ATM we really don't know.

I'm sure he, along with all the other hopefuls will get a crack during the pre-season to claim a spot, but don't be surprised to see Cloke at CHF, with Ackland (cringe.......he'll get the first crack IMO) and Hampson/Aisake rucking, with +/- Kreuzer in the forward pocket - possibly with Waite playing back........BUT

IF (big if)
  • Hartlett or Edwards dominate pre-season they could take Kreuzer or Clokes spot
  • Austin, Jamison or someone else stands up down back Waite could go forwrd again to take the spot as well.
Wait and see, but he may not be an automatic start for round 1, depending on the form of others.

Spot on BB! But don't you worry audas, me and the other principals of the 'Special K to Carlton Action Faction' are well and truly on to it. ;)

Although we must be patient and not throw him in too deep too soon, Kreuzer's special attributes - his lust for the the contest and his athleticism - will see him come on a bit quicker than your normal young ruck. Stay tuned for exciting times ahead. I can't wait to see him in 2010! I think i just wet my pants.

Kreuzer will be a gun, but we HAVE to be patient. I suspect he'll play about 10 games in 2008, with the majority of this time spent in the forward line. If opposition teams don't give him much respect, I could see him kicking a couple, and having some influence over the game.

My brother crosses paths through work with a club director who doesn't give squat away politically by the way.

He says Judd doesn't say a lot and he hasn't heard him talk about any of our players but out of the blue the other day muttered Kruzer will be an absolute gun. I get only little harmless snippets like this through my brother from this director which is a good sign.
And theres no need to disclose his name or my brother will shut up shop. You'll just have to believe me.
