Mate of mine was in Sydney for the weekend. Flying home last night, gets on his flight and spots Matthew Kruezer also flying back to Melbourne.

Anything out there regarding the Swans or GWS being into him?

After posting I remembered Sydney can't trade anyway. Unless he's a FA this year?
Can trade but can't be more than $350,000 (roughly) in contract. What is a former number 1 draft pick worth who has had a lot of injuries and really hasn't played a great deal of football due to injuries? I'd say not a great deal really. Worth not that much to head to swans? Doubt it

You should add "and who isn't very good."

I think Sydney should get Kruezer, He is better than both Pyke and Tippett. Sydney need a better ruckman. I don't believe Kruezer is that bad. If he gets a good run at it, I think he could be a good player for Sydney.

It could still happen. Kreuzer is a restricted free agent so let's say the Swans offer him a two-year contract worth $700,000 (350k a year). Carlton can then choose to match or let him walk for free. They will likely match and Kreuzer can request a trade to Sydney. The Swans are then able to trade something to the Blues in exchange for Kreuzer on an average wage. You get the deal done and then around February Kreuzer happens to fall in love with the Sydney culture and signs a two-year extension worth $2 million. That's a total of $2.7 million over four years which equates to about an average of $700,000 a year. Basically just a back-ended contract to avoid the ban.

Kreuzer to GWS doesn't make much sense but Kreuzer to Sydney does. They are desperate for a quality ruckman.

The AFL completely made up the trade ban out of thin air.

What makes you think the Swans would want to poke the beehive again?

GWS already have 3 ruckmen.
1 experienced and 2 getting experience.
Swans have a habit of recruiting this type.

How can the AFL justify any sort of ban when the COLA is completely removed next year? The reason Sydney would attempt a move like that is because they are probably one good ruckman away from another flag. The goal always has to be win a flag ASAP and when you factor in Buddy turning 29 before the start of next season as well as players like Goodes and McVeigh coming to the end, their window is somewhat limited. Maybe they'll just wait until the end of next season when the ban is lifted and chase a ruckman like Tyrone Vickery.

Fair point.

Anyone can see that such a scenario would be aimed at circumventing the ban the AFL put in place while it was still in effect. That's a pretty big provocation to the league HQ, and we know they don't like having their noses put out of joint.

Also I find it hard to believe Sydney would just extend his contract by two years when they have barely seen him play and already have him contracted anyway. They might have a gentleman's agreement sure, but they're under no obligation to fulfill it.

Knowing that possibility would make me pretty cautious if I were Kreuzer's management too.

That's true. The only reason they may not come down with the wrath of god is due to the fact that the Swans are based in NSW.

Yes but it would be more a case of justifying a clear under the table situation as opposed to anything else. He is worth more than 350k so it's just a case of back-ending a contract (with a contract extension) without breaking the rules. I was just providing a hypothetical situation that the Swans can perform without technically breaking the rules.

We offered Jaeger O'Meara for Kruezer a few years ago. Carlton said no. Can't see any reason to revisit the trade. If Sydney wants him, they can have him.

If that is what you wanted for Jaeger, can Freo have McCarthy for Zac Dawson?
