Toast Kyle Cheney

Was excellent both defensively and offensively. Should keep his spot, injured players should come back through Box Hill.

Finally I can say unequivocally that Cheney has arrived & now belongs on the big stage!...A full season of regular season football now beckons as he becomes a seamless replacement for Guerra at the heart of our defense.

His work in tandem with Gibbo on Friday night was brilliant....Looks poised, confident & up to the speed of AFL now....All he needed was regular senior football without the threat of demotion hanging over his head with his every kick and handball.

Kudos.
I have to say that Cheney has a heart as big as Pharlap's. But he gets some terribly hard jobs to do and has had to defend against blokes with 6 inches height on him. He never stops trying. He has real Hawk blood in him , like Spangher, fight to the death. But I've thought sometimes he could be used differently , I'm not sure where but I've seen him in impossible contests and never gets moved , maybe there is no one else to defend against the monsters , I don't believe that.

I swear it's because of the missed set shot 10m out from goal in Tassie that everyone thinks that.
That Tassie miss was absolutely a one off, if people can him from that they don't know what they are talking about. He's a senior AFL footballer, getting better and maybe used differently when we have a full contingent.

Interesting player is Cheney.

Cant put my finger on him as a player. Sometimes he makes you put your head in your hands, other times he is completely brilliant. Ie Last week.

If you've ever seen Cheney play at Box Hill then you'd know that he is a class above anyone else at the level....In defence he is seldom beaten & always appears a half second ahead of everyone else with regards reading of the play!...He is a solid uncompromising footballer who is a rock of Gibraltar in defence.

The trouble at senior level is his lack of pace for a bloke of his size.....This is the only thing stopping him from being a senior regular IMO.

This is true, but when he is playing well in the senior team, Ie last week... he is absolutely sensational defensively. Almost Gibson like against GWS.

But other times he looks like a deer in headlights.

Absolutely CLA!! i have never thought of Cheney as deer in the head lights either? He is not quick off the mark but he gets across the ground quick enough to spoil or mark. We certainly wouldn't be 7-3 without him.
try telling that to some of the fools i have seen lately bagging him :-(

Last week was the first time I have found myself in a close game hoping that he would get the ball as he was steady where others were messy. That is a tick.

He does telegraph what he is going to do with the ball pretty badly at AFL level which makes his disposal easy to read but I feel his decision making which has been a tad slow is getting better.

Hoping for another steady one from Cheezels tomorrow.

Interesting that Cheney is rated a class above VFL but his tasks on the monster forwards have found him out a bit. How do you rate him in comparison to Shoenmakers?

If Chee was the same height as Shoey. He could've been a serious key defender!

Pound for pound- cheeney is better than Schoey... But Schoey has more pounds AND is coming off a reco... So in summary- Schoey should be better in time, but at the moment cheeney is more reliable.,.

Cheney is the better footballer. He is a poor mans Gibbo. Most of his AFL experience at hawthorn has been playing as an undersized defender. I think he would be a good medium sized defender in a weaker side. Ideally play on the third tall forward. Shoe is bigger and taller but that's it really.

Schoenmakers has better size and ability. Cheney has better heart and fight in him. Cheney was going to ground a bit too much early in the year but he is strong for his size. Even the game that Tummy got to him, it was only in the last when our midfield basically rolled over and played dead.

So if you are worried about your midfield having a poor defensive side then Cheney is not for you as a KPD

That is exactly right. His endeavour is unquestionable , he has the heart of a lion. Where he was played in defence at Hawthorn was really the only place where he could be played. I saw many times his height leave him at such a disadvantage.

I like Shoenmakers as a forward , if Cheney had another 3 or 4 inches he would be dynamite in defence. The giants like Tomahawk are to big and tall.
