Have no issues with Nick and his attitude/antics as he is only 19. Confidence, perhaps arrogance and petulance seem to be the norm at that age. If he doesn't grow out of it in the next few years then my opinion will change.

He's clearly not overly arrogant.

I would imagine most grand slam winners or successful tennis players all have a "I'm ****ing better than you" mindset when they step on the court.

Yep. I think if he was American and being touted as the next big thing, they'd consider it pretty normal to have that "I'm better than you" mentality.

I love his swag, but he has to be concious that on-court is where most people see him, so that's where they'll base judgement, even if he's otherwise pretty well grounded as a person.

I honestly don't see the big deal in any of his on field antics, although I haven't seen or really heard what he did to some ball kid.

Like, none of the stuff he's done, is an objectively bad thing. He hasn't purposely hurt someone, gone against the spirit of the game, cheated, or anything like that.

If they don't like him because he smashes rackets, swears, tell people to shut up in the crowd.... then fair enough... they wouldn't get along with him in person at all, just doesn't make him an arrogant, cocky, whatever...

Yeah that's fine; personally I have no problem with anyone smashing racquets or berating themselves, even approaching the chair if that's what they feel they need to do.

Agree with ball kids and lines people, but I was at the first round match between Kyrgios and... other guy.

And some people in the crowd are just down right idiots.

This Open has been one of the more moronic crowds no doubt. As a self-confessed moron of the upper echelon, if I can realise they're about to play and keep quiet, anyone can.

I laugh at all these people who complain about his foul language. Dropping f bombs and the like
How precious do you have to be. It's just a word. People use it all the time. If I could count the number of times I heard people say it this week it would be well over 100 times.

When I make a mistake I swear. When I get frustrated I swear. When I see something outrageous I swear. These things all happen frequently in tennis.

He isn't one of the local church ladies playing social bowls on a Sunday afternoon. He is a highly driven, testosterone fuelled male. I just shows how out of touch some people are with young Australians these days,

The other concern is he's showing signs of big head syndrome. Rafter is doing his bit to keep that in check. Not with much success at present.

I think the difference is with the swearing is that everybody in the court can practically hear it where as footballers who swear on the field don't get heard by the crowd

Oh I've heard them, but I don't really look at the "tennis rules" when judging a player.

I don't really care if a player throws a **** or whatever here and there. Yeah, they are uncontrollably, a role model for kids. But they are just normal human beings who are good at tennis. As an adult, I can understand that.

Exactly the same how I feel regarding smashing rackets. I know it might not look good to the PC brigade, but **** man, when a mans gotta smash a racket, a mans gonna smash a racket. Or a woman.

As for the smartass comments, I've only heard the 5th set one, in which... yeah I agree... probably could have handled it a bit better just to be nice, but it was a stupid question.

Maybe Rafter and Newcombe, who knew how to win, found it difficult to tolerate a player with a heart like a split pea who let down his team mates. Phillipousis was a mental squib and because of that never realised his full potential.

Kyrgios is a hugely impressive kid who has top 10 player written all over him.

As long as he surrounds himself with the right people and continues to work hard on his game I believe he'll certainly get there in the next few years.

What defines the best of the best is their stats on the return game. Kyrgios is behind significantly.

I'd be interested in seeing some stats on this? I would imagine his return stats are a fair way off the elite right now, but is there any way to compare them to the Nadal, Djokovic etc stats from a similar age/time in career?

Looking forward to see how he goes tonight. Dont expect him to win, his defense needs major work, but his attacking game is better than Murray's. Hopefully he can win a set or two.
