He's 100% right, people that send these abusive messages to players are absolute w***ers.

Not sure how you stop it though.
Social media sites used to have at least some sort of assistance to remove these things and block users.

Now it's all freeze peach...

Lachie Neale needs to grow up.

For some people (not me) their happiness depends on their team's result.

Lachie Neale got 25 last night, so I doubt his comment is linked to gamblers.

The Brisbane fans are rightfully annoyed at their poor performance. Be grateful to the fans who financially support you and don't get smashed by 10 goals in your marquee H&A match.
Buying a ticket or a membership doesn't give anyone the right to post over the top abuse and threats.

Not sure you're telling the right people to grow up in this post.

It was another player who was abused, not Neale, so it could have been gambling related. But abuse of any kind is unacceptable. Not sure why you're telling Lachie to grow up.

Clearly its Lachies fault for not single handedly winning the game, he deserves all the abuse he gets.

People whose happiness is linked to a football game to that extent are the precise demographic who need to act their age, assuming they aren’t actual children.

Calling these people out never has, at any time, done anything to stop it. Some just do it for attention and the thrill of knowing they’re getting through. “Calling it out” encourages them and other like-minded numbskulls.

Block, mute, ignore is the only way to deal with it. Period.

Other methods are:

- Remove yourself from social media completely

- Have a completely private social media account under a false name. A lot of people in the public eye do this - it allows them to engage with those they know and nobody else.

There will be some people with the “well they shouldn’t have to do that!!” opinion. Well yeah, maybe they shouldn’t have to. But they do.

Neale “calling it out” out of frustration will have the exact opposite effect to what he wants. It always has. It’s a very poorly considered decision.

The other aspect is problem gambling - when you derive your income from an activity which people gamble on, well unfortunately this is part of the territory. Gambling addiction is a mental health issue and it affects some people this way. Speak to jockeys or horse trainers, they’ve been copping it forever.

And if anybody thinks footy isn’t a gambling platform, grow up. The AFL is inextricably intertwined with gambling. It’s the single biggest funding source for the game, both directly from betting companies and indirectly from broadcast revenue, which is driven by gambling advertising. The AFL lobbies against gambling advertisement reform for a reason. The game and those within it have been bought.

Win a flag, be undefeated in the first month ❌

Lose their “marquee” match ✅

This whole post just seems like you wanting to get in a whinge about gambling - which is fair because the way it has normalised itself is awful, but you don’t get to just wave a hand at the player abuse either.

Who said he was talking about last nights game? I would say he's saying it's the w***ers in general who abuse all players after doing something that gets their panties in a bunch

Considering his recent form & last nights performance, fair chance it could be Ashcroft - makes sense it’d anger the captain enough when it’s a literal 20 year old as opposed to Zorko orhimself.

Awful regardless but something particularly awful about abusing a 20 year old - an age at which point in my eyes is still a kid.

So a team losing a game to another good team, warrants people hiding behind fake profiles calling players a s**t C word, making death threats, racist and homophobic slurs, as well as threatening sexual assault of said players wives, and even their daughters who are minors? This is literally some of the type of content that is sent out weekly by cowards on the internet. The fact you seem okay with this, and think financial privilege is a license to do the above, says more about you than the players.

Also unrelated, and not a reply to you. Saving me another post. But If people gamble and get angry a players for falling one disposal short of making you money, the issue is not the player, but YOU making a choice to gamble. There is a reason it is called gambling. Its not called "insta win every time". You took the risk, your loss.

And for those who say to players to just get off social media. Is just apologists to the toxic sh*t stains online, instead of telling people not to be a holes online, its blaming the victim of their vileness. People, regardless whether a sports person, should be able to freely connect with family, friends, and browse content in the way every regular person does.

If the AFL had any balls. They'd life ban all the ones stupid enough NOT to hide behind a fake profile. But oddly you never hear about anything like that happening much.

Not whinging about gambling. I gamble myself.

The reality is if you make your living from a gambling-based endeavour - and some will argue with this, but footy pretty much now is that - then this is always going to happen. It affects some people very badly and this is how some of them react.

I genuinely believe that many in football, including many players, are in denial about the industry they are in.
