I was barely listening - but didn't like what I did catch of it.

I expect better from Buckley. He was oddly very critical of Collingwood for this. I believe they did try to call for a stretcher but play wasn't stopped and they quickly tried to remove him from the field. This was not on Collingwood.

Damning evidence against the AFL - to hear them in the comms, all discussing the injured player that they had first claimed not to see. Whether umpires lied or AFL did, this was poorly handled.
To my very untrained eye it looked like our medicos were calling for the stretcher, but Schultz started running off

yep - and I think they went with that since play wasn't stopped.
Schultz wasn't in his right mind - I remember Voss getting a massive concussion in a game at Marvel against us - he got up and ran to a contest, head first, fell flat on his face again.
I think instinct kicks in while they're on the field. Not stopping the play didn't give much option to lie him back down and wait for a stretcher.

regardless of the persons sex, do you think the game is better run since Kane was appointed?
I'm not sure we have access to all different data necessary to make that kind of claim, and it would also be dependent on what your success criteria are. There are obvious issues, but is Kane solely responsible?

We also don't know what the hiring criteria were, nor who was interested in the gig. I know I wouldn't want the kind of scrutiny this role entails (not that I am remotely qualified).

Dillon and Kane have had their moments - good and bad. But for me, the administration is performing better than it was under Gil. I’ll credit him with running the competition well during COVID - but I have other issues with how he performed.

It goes without saying that these positions are very difficult, barely compensated by the good remuneration.

As has been posted here, Kane and her boss would not be caught up in the nitty gritty of every footy scandal and slip up. What is important to us fans - and what happened with Shoota was truly awful - are oftentimes matters which are handled by lesser lights at AFL HQ.

The treatment of Shoota has become a high profile matter - as it should be. Kane may have mishandled it, initially at least. It’s what happens next which is important, and that may include her. At the very least, the AFL continues to inch its way forward on improving concussion avoidance and management.

But I’d also say there are significant double standards at play here. I’m a fan of The Front Bar, as are many footy fans. Do posters get so enraged when that show frequently features and celebrates ex-footballers who went around hitting opposition players? Some nights, the footage from the 70s and 80s is full of violence. Our own Phil Carman a recent example. I don’t recall any complaints about showing footage of the ‘hard men’ of footy history. We also rarely if at all hear about what happened to their victims.

I guess because they didn’t expect 4 umpires to lie to them?
Pretty f**king stupid to believe 4 umpires didn't see a bad case of concussion, a major incident that occurred in the game?

She lied twice in her statement.

1) The umpires saw the incident.

2) They didn't stop the game after seeing the incident.

Now another bullshit lie she posted.... they don't 'remember'! LOL This clown Laura Kane needs to go.

As I said earlier.

If we assume Laura is telling the truth, their initial statement was that the umpires “didn’t recall seeing the incident”

So, the umpires lied or Laura lied
The umpires lied and Laura did what any other executive would do and support the umpires, it's her job. She did apologise afterwards.

While this is no doubt quite a serious issue, and they do need to work out what really went on, I find it very annoying that people are so quick to jump on the AFL and criticise every chance they get (I don't mean you!). They get a few things wrong, but the level of criticism is totally over the top!

All the things that to me should matter the most are in fantastic shape. Attendances have been just phenomenal over the last three or so years in particular (despite "cost of living crisis" talk dominating the headlines!), club membership figures have continued to soar year after year, the game itself is superb to watch once again (it wasn't for a long time), and the competition is incredibly even, exciting and unpredictable. We've just had one of the greatest rounds of football in the game/competition's history, with eight of the nine games won by 15 points or less. It would have been nice if the media had focused on that for a week or so, and just reminded people of how brilliant the game is, but of course they prefer a negative type story/scandal any day!

As for the people who like to complain about the umpiring and tribunal decisions (and MRO ones as well), if they were to have a read through some old newspapers they'd see that people have been doing the same forever and a day, and the idea that "the umpiring has never been worse than it is today" is not a new thought, it's something that's been said quite a lot over the years!

regardless of who said what, why wouldn't you check the video and audio before going on record? it would probably take less than 10 minutes total.
2 reasons:

1) You are not experienced/brave enough to call out BS

2) You don't want to do your job

The respectable thing to do today is for Laura Kane and the Umpires Boss (whoever that is) to front the media and explain why proper duty of care wasn't afforded to Lachie Schultz when he was concussed.

That is the most important issue. The AFL failed Lachie Schultz (which could have serious long term implications for him) and Laura Kane released a media statement which contained 2 blatant lies. 1. The umpires didn't see the incident. 2. The umpires would have stopped the game had they seen it.

So Laura and the Umpires Boss.... front the media today and explain yourselves, apologies to Schultz and family for mucking it up, and detail what will happen in the future WHEN (not if) another incident like this occurs.

Anyone protecting Laura Kane in this matter is misguided. What's more important Lachie Schultz's health or her career?

Executives don’t trust blindly. “Trust but verify” is the standard operating requirement here. She should have gone to the video before making the statement on Friday. That’s her failure and why she owns this.

Umpire Carbury was my year 12 English teacher. He was devastated when he came to school with a bandage spread right across his face. It's safe to say he wasn't happy. The 80's was a brutal time to play footy. I'm glad all the sniping has gone out of the game

Who do you support, the AFL or Lachie Schultz?

Lachie Schultz's family would be furious with how the AFL and their umpires abandoned their duty of care after his sickening concussion.... especially given it was a serious and OBVIOUS to everyone of 40,000 in attendance except for 4 umpires (LOL) it was a concussion.

frozen let it go GIF by Walt Disney Animation Studios

Bucks on Whateley this morning got it wrong.
Victim blamed Collingwood coaches/medical.
Said the umpires had no case to answer....
Buckley was 'angry' and accused the AFL (Andrew Dillon and Laura Kane) of poor 'LEADERSHIP' and lack of 'INTEGRITY'.

I agree too, because the current AFL administration appears incompetent.

Concussion is the number 1 issue in the AFL right now, and someone in the AFL administration decided it was a good idea to publish a public lie about it WITHOUT doing their job and crosschecking game video/audio which they have access to. This is after a week of NOT DOING THEIR JOB, in the Willie Rioli case and letting the media do it for them - and then the AFL looking stupid.

Buckley said he had no problem as to how the umpires acted on the Lachie Schultz concussion at the time. He also mentioned it concerned him that the umpires communicated that they were waiting for further instruction from 'someone' whether they needed to stop the game and there was a bit of confusion about this.

This also needs to be addressed - clarification as to what the process is when a player is concussed out on the field. You can't have umpires stopping games for cramp and not for concussion.

Leadership and Integrity is 100% correct. AFL administration is currently lacking both.

I just relooked the video of tackle, bump and concussion.

What a warrior Shoota is! The shots of him tackling in full horizontal moving at full pace is amazing. Pray for this guy to get back to 100%, because he deserves it and to keep us fans in awe.

I don’t understand the bump rule. Based on my reading, the Fremantle player jumped, braced, protected himself with the shoulder, and was obviously a reflex action. However, there seems to be a number of these reflex bumps which have resulted in suspensions. Does anyone have a clear explanation as to why this case is so obviously different?

I get it that he was angry, but victim blaming is not a solution.

He's got the ball.

Sam Edmund is pretty much saying the same thing on sen too this afternoon.

Even had a dig at Darcy Moore 🙄
Tools! Were we meant to just charge on the field with stretcher? No. Not unless play is stopped.
The umpires or someone lied. How one of our players getting knocked into next week, albeit not malicious, is our fault when the whole focus is on the AFL and/or the umpires, is just putrid journalist anti Collingwood. Buckley isn't, but he is clearly wrong here.

How does it work witha stretcher being an automatic game stopper? Do we just call for it and the umpires stop the game?
