They would have been happy taking him. They wanted another young ruckman after taking McEvoy the year before. Ended up taking Rhys Stanley at pick 47 instead.
They knew we would match the bid anyway.
Yeah, we're not exactly experts at holding our cards close to our chests...

So the Saints would take a chance on getting a player they don't wont, on behalf of all the other clubs:confused:o_O
The risk was infinitesmal, he was assessed as a top 5 pick and certainly a higher pick than either the Saints or our first pick. St Kilda didn't have much in the ruck stakes at the time, it was about the time they picked up Gardiner. If we passed, the Saints would have been happy.

So, forgive my possible stupidity but what happens to the player if the club decides not to use father son selection. Does the player then go to the team that bid or do they just enter the draft as normal?

Igloo's correct but there are three stages with slightly differing outcomes.
Firstly club A announces it is nominating a player for a f/s.
Then other clubs get to bid. Let's say club B bids highest.
Then club A has last call on whether to counter with their next "natural" pick after club B's (they can't use compo picks).

So:
  • If club A has a father/son option but doesn't even nominate him then he goes straight into the national draft (like Stewart of Collingwood this year, I believe)
  • If no club bids for club A's f/s then he must be taken with club A's last pick in the national draft (i.e. around the same time as rookie elevations)
  • If club A nominates a player as a f/s and club B bids but club A fails to match that bid then club B must use their nominated pick on that player.
  • If club A does match the bid then club A must use their nominated pick on that player.

Well they clearly wanted him otherwise they wouldn't have bid. They would have been extremely happy to get him

But no no you know everything :confused:o_O
Have you even been following the provouis posts:confused:o_O, maybe you should should before you post:confused:o_O

For all the advantages of having an ongoing relationship with these kids (inviting them to the club, having skills and training sessions etc) it certainly does send a clear message to the wide world that we're keen on them. When you've spent the last two years grooming a kid it's pretty hard to conceal your cards.

Doesn't mean you'll take them early.

True, but other clubs know you'll be reluctant to let all that effort go to waste.
We're by no means unique here. Young Essendon (Daniher) and Melb (Viney) are in the same boat. We all know Melbourne will be 99% certain to pick Viney at #3 if GWS or GC (or whoever) is game to bid for him with pick 1 or 2. So the tactical game is to make sure they don't pay way unders and pick him up with a 2nd rounder.

Indeed. but for instance if a club bid a first rounder on Hunter, Doesn't mean we'd definitely pick him. Definitely agree with your sentiment if it's in regards to top players, I think Hunter will help us see what it's like for the lesser lights.

"W Bulldogs have exercised its Father / Son option on Lachlan Hunter with pick 46 after N Melbourne nominated pick 35 in the bid meeting."

With some other less positive news out today, let's just be happy with the fact we have gotten 4 draftable sons in the past 4 or 5 years. You must admit that for a team that is often touted as highly unlucky it's somewhat bucking the trend. Thank you all, productive former players!

can someone please tell us who havn't seen him play what kind of a player he is and can we expect him to play at all next season?

Well apparently from Gary Walsh-
Lachie Hunter is son of ex-Bulldog Mark. Played with Oakleigh Chargers and St Kevin's College this year. Dad is a professional punter, and Lachie was seen in Fashions on the Field at Caulfield last year pulling his best Zoolander moves.

Quite the dapper young man
