Why not ? Wallis was rated as an early first round pick. We had 3rd last pick. We'd committed to him and put time and resources into grooming him. Like all clubs, we need to continually seek to improve midfield stocks, midfielder types make up the bulk of the team. Whilst you can question his ability/application/ mental aptitude in retrospect, the decision made at the time was the correct one. I disagree with the doomsayers. Wallis made his debut in his first year. Objectively speaking, his progress is about right. I expect he'll be a fine player for the club.

As long as we put enough doubt in the minds of the other clubs so they take a gamble that we may not take him with a round 1 pick. They then have to take him with theirs. There was never any doubt we'd take Wallis, Liberatore or Cordy. But at worst we only ever had to use a late first round pick.

But really....if we end up with picks 5 and 6 this year....Hunter would need to be pretty good to use one of those. Not having seen him play, but from what I hear he sounds like a second round pick to me.

There is no point in any other club playing mind games with this - if Hunter was worth a second rounder, they'd be giving up a pick in the first four for him, whilst we would get the 4th and 5th best players in the draft!!

Good point jtg. Makes you wonder if any club will ever bid and get another club's f/s prospect. Especially in first or second round.

On the Wallis debate - no-one was questioning the selection when he picked up 45 touches in the TAC GF. The drafting of Wallis and Libba was described as the scoop of the draft. We probably all hoped and expected young Wally to come on a bit faster than he has (and had not expected Libba to be as good as he has).

I think it shows how much faster the AFL is played than other comps. I reckon it will just take a little while for Wallis to adjust to the pace before he becomes a regular. I still think he'll make it. He looks to be dedicated and have an excellent head on his shoulders.

Given the reported strength of the draft this year TK, I would hope that all draft selections are measured against a prioritised set of needs that have been well considered in relation to our current list and that this especially important with the first rounders this year. We can’t afford to be bluffed into picking up a f/s with our first couple of picks if he doesn’t meet the most urgent of prioritised recruitment criteria.

A team bids for our f/s, we have to use our next available pick to get him.
This is before trade week, before anyone asks! But it does include Wards compo pick.

Best case scenario is hunter is valued slightly higher than a pick we have, so we get to skip an entire round before our 'next available' pick comes up.

Worst case scenario is hunter is valued slightly lower than one of our picks which means we get him for 'market value', ala Cordy.

Assuming we are going to get our two picks back-to-back around the early-mid first round, we want hunter valued at mid-late first round. If the boy is a deadset gun, he really needs to take it easy towards the second half of this year

T Walalce was on his regular spot on SEN today, someone rang and asked about Hunter and Beasley, I did not listen diligently but I think he daid hes a gun and must be picked and did not know much about Beasley he is a rower and would be a speculative pick.

Firstly, we won't have between pick 1 and 6, unless we have an absolutely dismal year.

Secondly, even if we did have between pick 1 and 6, it would only cost us this pick if a team higher than us put in a bid for him. Clubs are incredibly unlikely to do that unless he has the talent comparible to a top 5 pick, because if he doesn't and the Bulldogs call their bluff, then they are using a top 5 pick on a player thats not worthy.

Thirdly, the Father/Son process is about 8 months away, in which time the kid could either become the best junior footballer in the country, or do his knee and be out of action for 12 months, so could be worth a 1st rd pick or be undrafted, so it's rather pointless discussing whether we'd use a top 5 pick on him or no.

I am 100% sure with how it works BTW!

Here are a couple more scenarios on how the F/S works...

Example 1 - Bulldogs finish last in 2012. We would have picks 1 and 2, and (ignoring other club's actioning their compo picks), let's say pick 20 is our next pick.

In the F/S discussions, GWS finish 17th and bid their first round pick, pick 3 overall, on Hunter.

If we want to take him, we would be forced to use our next available pick - i.e. pick 20.

Example 2 - Bulldogs finish 17th in 2012. We would have picks 2 and 3 in the first round.

Let's say GWS finish bottom, and bid their first pick which is pick 1 overall on Hunter. They are just playing mind games with us, cos he is only really valued as a late first rounder.

We could either:
- Use our next available pick on Hunter, pick 2, to get him; or
- Allow GWS to have him at pick 1, allowing us to have the first two picks overall.

If Hunter is rated as a late first rounder, there is no way the bottom placed GWS would play mind games here - they would just be after the best player!!!


Example 3 (and most realistic):

Bulldogs finish 11th. We have picks 8 and 9 in the first round, along with pick 29 in the second round (our 2nd round pick will slide places due to Melbourne and Adelaide also using first round compo picks in their possession).

West Coast indicate a desire to draft Hunter. Their first pick is pick 14 in the draft, which is late in the first round.

Our next available pick is our second-rounder, pick 29. We take him using that pick.

going by the the info from GTG, it would seem that the lower we finnish the better the deal we'll get for Hunter. If he is a super star, then only teams with a lower pick than us can force us to use a first rounder on him in which case we'd want to grab him anyway I suspect.

Unless a gun key forward lands in our lap next year, Id be tempted to take mids with our first three picks, and that includes hunter as (hopefully) the third pick. If he has disposal issues, we just make sure we the first two picks are and on the quicker side and have excellent disposal.

As promising as Libba, Smith,Dal and Wallis were against the roos, they are going to need help once boyd and cross are finished. True we have Picken and Grif, but injuries will play their part - nothing wrong with having a stable of 9-10 midfielders to choose from.

Im not sure where higgins and cooney fit into our future plans, for differing reasons. It may be that higgins ends up in gias role as wily small forward.
