Toast Lachlan Keeffe

Right now he is playing some rock solid footy, and with such a young defence that's exactly what you're after. Barely put a foot wrong since coming into the team under pretty difficult circumstances.

I think as a player he has a very high ceiling; extremely tall and agile, seems to manage to get a hand in there to spoil at the last minute, a good temperament as a defender, a raking kick off either foot, a hard worker and given what we've seen a very fast learner. I think it's just a matter of time and confidence. I can easily see him being our interceptor and our main distributor from the backline if he wants to be, the comparison to Fletcher is actually a good one, Dustbin at his best is what Keeffe should be modelling his game on.
 
His tackle on Joe Daniher was absolutely fantastic, same with Tooveys on Carlisle, they revved me up more than anything.

Petrie after being Keeffed=Should have been dropped
Carlisle after being Keeffed=most likely going to be dropped
Keeffe is the human blanket and the one man omitting machine.

Who found him BTW ?.
 
I am a huge Keefey fan... He has some special talents and I like his big Lebowski zenned out dude demeanor on the field.
 
The ultimate confidence player.

The blind turn shimmy in the third quarter would have been a dream 6 weeks ago, but with time in the senior line up he always grows another leg.

I also love the intimidation factor of Keeffe without him saying or doing anything. There are some big forwards in this league yet no matter who they are if Keeffe is sent to them they are smaller. It's a psychological matter, but when your always bigger than your opponent and all of a sudden your the smaller man it has an impact!

It cannot be undereestimated how important this is, especially for a defender. If youre not scared to run off with the ball and kick on your non preferred boot its almost impossible to be coralled. Makes you and infinitely effective player when rebounding because you have the whole field ahead of you rather than a third of it.

Easy to understand his inclusion in the leadership group. Footage of the rooms before the ANZAC game showed Keeffey going around to every player before they ran out.

How good is that to see. A young bloke taking initiative as a leader. Absolutely love it.

I'm seriously wondering if Keeffey is ambidextrous. After coming to the game so late, you'd assume he only really had time to learn the skills on his preferred side but he's proven that wrong and is very good on both sides of his body. Furthermore to this, in coaching and player development these days there is a huge emphasis on hitting targets and if a player can do so, he's obliged to get onto his preferred to ensure he hits the target. Using your non preferred isn't really coached as much in the last two years, as it was ten years ago. All of this coming from a development coach from the Brisbane Lions whose name I have forgotten (probably doesn't say much though being the Lions haha).

So it would be very interesting to note if he has a preference at all.

From his bio on the Collingwood website:
"Should he cement himself as a senior player, Keeffe may represent General Manager of List Management Derek Hine's greatest success story. Plucked from a Queensland talent search, Keeffe had barely touched a Sherrin before walking in the door at Collingwood. Three years of development culminated in his debut in 2011 and some promising showings at AFL level. Has a long reach, has great agility and has the capacity to play in key position posts at both ends of the ground as well as pinch hit in the ruck. Was one of the success stories of Collingwood's patchy start to 2012 but was forced to spent 12 months on the sidelines due to a knee reconstruction. Returned midway through last season and played the final eight matches at centre half back where he gained experience on the likes of Kurt Tippett and Lance Franklin. Will be aiming for an injury-free season in 2014."
 
Don't underestimate the magnitude of the jump he made this year. His preseason form was not good, and he only got into the side because of injury. As soon as he got there though, he was influential. Barring injury, he has a job for life. I don't see a weakness in his game.
 
It has been great to see him turn around his poor form from the preseason and really take a hold of his spot. So much potential for a big defender.
 
Seriously, what with Keeffe and Witts plucked from virtual obscurity by Hine, and then put through our development system, we must have one of the better systems in the AFL. The number of rookies in our best 22 is also demonstrative of this. Would love to know the stats, and how we compare.

I know the Hawks and Swans are renowned for picking up players from other clubs, and improving them. But our rookie development, and that of very low draft picks, is just outstanding. Talk about reward for effort.

Agree Vicky we all talk in reverent tones of Hine - well all except a few - and with good reason but our development staff and the work they do is largely unremarked.

It's one thing to pick a lad from obscurity using experience and intuition but its another thing entirely to nurture that nascent talent into an AFL ready footballer.

it is not the first time he has done this. He seems to be alot better at home and away games then preseasion games and even VFL games. It was the same in 2012
 
Lachie Keeffe is a very solid defender in my opinion. Always wins 1on1 and uses the ball very well
 
Never understood why so many had an issue with him personally.

I think many Collingwood supporters need to learn a little more patience with younger more inexperienced players. Keefe was always going to take time given he didn't grow up on the sport. Let alone the fact that he's 204cm and big guys always take longer. I think he's made himself a decent player in pretty quick time.

He's surprisingly agile for someone his size. Not so much quick, but very agile. His little twists, turns and baulks (borks?) really make you forget how big he actually is. His body shape plays a part in that. He's almost a 200cm Daicos in body shape. Long torso with short legs (like me), so I guess that gives him a really nice low centre of gravity, which would help enormously for someone of his height.

Looking forward to seeing him improve over the next few years.

I had a brief look at the Hawks recruiting over the last 10 years and it was pretty good all around. Breust and some others came off the rookie list. They were quite paitent with them. We've done well. I think our club has a rather large dept and should be doing better than 15 years ago, so we all realise the improvement. I think the hard deciions of the last two years was also required. I didnt like the number of hobbits but I like the balance more in the last year or so. Keeffe is one of those recruiting wins like Breust has been for Hawthorn. It's the strike rate that important
