Keefe is gold. His kicking is amazing. I am starting to think that people who have never kicked a footy until their late teens have no bad habits and end up with great foot skills.

He is not a ruck option as he is too skinny. Getting to fill this role would destroy his career. That role is for big lumps of blokes who are good at lifting things and potentially can play football (ie Chris Dawes).

Dawes is the one to fill Leroy's role. Completely given up on Wood and am looking to see how Celgar and Witts develop, but don't want to rush them.

Rotate Jolly and Dawes through the forward line, keep Keefe in the backline and that releases either Tarrant or Reid into the forward line. Either would probably work and both should be tried. Just take a horses for courses approach depending on the match up for the day.

The other thing with the forward line is Fazolo is a liability unless he starts to do the team thing. I would far prefer Goldy in before him.

I reckon play Fasolo off the half back flank and keep Clarke tagging for a few weeks, see what happens. Didak and Thomas come back in and were back on track again even without Krakouer. Last year we didn't really have a Didak, so if he does what he is capable of this year we shouldn't miss Kraks too much.

Re: Lachlan Keefe

He's been going well Keefe. I guess all he needed was some confidence in himself, that he really could compete at the highest level. Not bad for a guy we recruited as a Soccer player.

Keefe looks natural down back, like he's being doing it forever. Leave him there without a doubt.

Maybe we're even taking advantage of how well he is doing, well me anyway. TOAST to Keefe!!!

Possibly, but I think it might have to do with the fact he was a high level soccer player prior to his first boot of a Sherrin.

Does anyone have a theory explaining how a guy who looked clueless on most of the occasions he played in 2011 and NaB Cup suddenly has supporters worshipping his skills and tenacity on the ground? Even when sent forward, Keeffe looked threatening.

Why are some players able to suddenly go from 'not at AFL standard' to a dependable player who you want to have the ball in his hands? Keeffe, with his speed and overhead marking, would have to be a chance to stand Buddy Franklin next time we play them. Not to deny Tarrant first shot at Buddy, but Lachlan certainly seems more suited than Reid.

I am not sure how elite Keeffe's soccer credentials are but only Marty Clarke and Pendlebury have crossed codes while young and had instant success. Keeffe may have spent a year or two more in making good AFL standard, but under normal circumstances, his height and build would have held back anyone of his height. His skills both sides are exceptional and he is getting smarter with each game.

There is probably nothing more satisfying than a young player showing unexpected development. It gives you hope that others may take a similar path rather than ponderously pass their time in the VFL. Elliott, Paine, Williams and even Mooney may be the next player to make the transition. The year is not lost yet.

It could be something like this MMM. . .

I started learning to fly remote controlled aircraft at the age of 55 and it took me 2 fr1gg1n years to get a handle on it, then suddenly everything 'clicked' - I 'got it'. I'd known all the stuff for ages but couldn't seem to get my head around it and then suddenly it was all there.

That one has had me baffled too. When I saw Keeffe playing in the NAB cup I shook my head and concluded that would be the last ever game he'd ever be seen in the seniors.

I don't know about football, I've seen this kind of behaviour in other industries as being the difference between sincerely trying to be seen to be doing the right thing, and actually doing the right thing.

And that comes with both skill and confidence.

I don't agree he looked clueless previously.

IMO he was exceptionally good as a defender in the 2011 NAB Cup, but struggled later in the year playing as a key forward. Which is understandable given he was new to the game and had done all his development as a defender and played all his VFL footy as a defender.

It's the BUCKLEY FACTOR.

Forget about Malthouse - this guy knows how to improve our youth. No more stagnating piles of poo. We are seeing Sinclair, Keeffe, Buckley becoming solid depth (if not best 22)... Wait til Witts cracks a game!!!

Keeffe showed in 2011 NAB Cup that he was capable however I think due to him being played forward and also being his first taste of seniors he found it difficult. It is normal to think that having the experience and playing in defense was the difference between his confidence levels this season.

What is quite impressive was the difference between this years NAB Cup and the proper season. He looked lost in the NAB but now potentially warrant selection over our experienced guys.

I think he not only deserves a Rising Star nomination but should be up there for consideration for the overall award. Much more difficult to come in as a young tall defender and play like he has than a midfielder however I have little hope of this happening.

The "unexpected development" usually occurs because of confidence. I would suggest the name Tom Hawkins and last years Grand Final as an example...

Makes me wonder again why Magpies supporters kick young Pie footballers....

His recent form in the AFL is similar to how he played in the VFL for quite a while. Just very dependable. When he got promoted last year it was as a forward, so he looked uncomfortable. The anomaly is the NAB cup this year. Looked really out of sorts, but now his form is more reflective of how he went about it in the seconds. I must admit I thought he was gone after the NAB cup. Just felt he would never be able to adjust to the speed at his height, and the seconds was where he could play without getting found out. Not everyone catches as much seconds actions compared with the seniors so his form might be a massive surprise to some, but his play at the moment seems pretty familiar to what he's been doing for a while, be it at a lower level.

Id' be really disappointed to see him dropped right now.

Completely deserves his spot, and I'd expect blistering form from one of the others to be the only thing keeping him out.
100% correct he has and is earning his spot on a weekly basis I don,t think there has been a game yet where he has not been in the best 6 or 7 I think Harry O should be dropped before he is if we are picking on form.

I think the way we should be picking is on form not on past exploits and on displayed form he would be very unlucky to be dropped.

He's playing at a really high level, and being able to play alongside guys like Maxy and Heater who will zone off and help will have helped his confidence enormously. He still lacks mobility to an extent and will get found out at times by more mobile players on the lead, but it's also up to our midfield to apply pressure and impact the delivery coming in. When they're kicking it on his opponent's head, he's doing a tremendous job of killing the forward entry.

this :thumbsu:. with high midfield pressure he'll dominate, with high bombs comming in his opponents wont know how to play against a taller defender.

however he could get found out if we have low midfield pressure, due to pace and agility on the lead
