Look, I breathed a sigh of relief when my son texted the news to me. But that bloke gave every ounce of himself to our club... it just wasn't enough. Cheers Smurph. Hope the next chapter is a good one.

I dont hate the bloke. Ive seen him through Crows social media several times and appears to be a great guy. Im a great guy, I just cant football. Being a great guy means little to professional football though. He can hold his head up, he played over 100 games of AFL football. He lucked out. He would know that had he been at any other club during his time he probably would have never played a game or played very minimal. So to survive 8 seasons on an AFL list is something he can be proud of.

There is a glaring divide between Nicks and list management, this is not the first time this has happened - a player being selected when he is clearly about to get delisted. We've wasted so much time on Murphy due to Nicks obsession with him when that time should have been spent looking at others, ridiculous.

Nicks would have a say on who is getting delisted though. Which could mean due to Nicks golden tickets selection ideology he was gifting Murphy every chance to prove himself to stay on the list.

Whether I am right about this or very wrong, Nicks looks like a pathetic loser at selection either way.

If I am right, he sacrificed development of Dowling, Edwards etc for his pet or If I am wrong, he openly admits his selection pays no attention to form or evidence based on what a player can produce and has consistently produced in the past. And he admits a reluctance to go in a new direction. Which again then lends itself to questions over Curtin, Draper, Dowling, Edwards treatment at the selection table.

Why would the coaches set up a process that they are only going to veto??? Seems an odd way to get players on board.
Because they have to be sure the player is in their best 22, if the player won’t be, having them in your leadership group is stipid isn’t it?

Also they set up the stupid 8 man leadership group in the first place, reduce the numbers and he wouldn’t make it.

Nicks clearly rated him in the best 23 in 2024. Selected him until his injury then proceeded to select him upon return for the rest of the season. Hence why he didnt veto.

People don't understand the difference between Team Selection and List Management.

Team Selection is about what is best for the short-term: winning the game this week, using whatever resources (players) are available that week.
List Mangement is about what is best for the long-term: building the strongest possible list for future seasons.

It is not uncommon for short & long term demands to be conflicting, as is/was the case with Murphy's selection and delisting. Short-term thinking should certainly dominate when playing finals (i.e. 2025), but long-term thinking should dominate late in the season if finals are no longer possible (i.e. 2024).

I understand that, but it was obvious Murphy was an awful short-term solution as well, hence why he was delisted.

Can anyone remember the last time we’ve delisted a player this soon after the season ended??

Usually even with the most obvious delistees we’ve always worked til after trade week to finalise these decisions.

We are usually one of the few clubs who never delist until around trade week.

The club hasn't made any announcements about Murphy's delistings yet. All we have is a report on comments Murphy made following his exit interview.

I have no doubt that he will be delisted, but we probably need to wait for the rest of the exit interviews before the club makes any public announcements about the first batch of delisted players.

What's unusual here is that it's being reported based on comments from Murphy, not the result of a media release by the club. Normally, the players wait for the media release before going public.

Don't you want "good Club men" around you though? Clearly it's why Smurph and Rob have been voted in to the leadership group.
Well you'd hope most would be good club men. But being a good club man/woman does not make you a good leader necessarily, and I think the role of a leader is different. Leaders sometimes have to make decisions or have conversations that maybe good club people aren't equipped for.

Murphy played 5x more games than Billy Dowling this season

22 total disposals for 0.2 - Murphy
14 disposals and 2.0 - Dowling

One was named as an emergency for a Semi Final, the other one was dropped after one game.
Worth noting too it was Dowling's 10th ever game. Compared to games 116-120 for Murphy.

can someone do a welfare check on Nicks - is he ok after making this decision ?

Why did we play him ahead of Draper this year ?

Yes Draper is a mid but he still would have had more value playing forward than Murphy

Can't believe he's finally gone.

Nothing personal against Murphy but he just isn't up to AFL standard. I wish him well wherever he pulls the boots on next year.

His claim to fame in my eyes was the free kick in the dying seconds in the Showdown, then staying down to allow Dawson to kick the winning goal.

Typical Crows that a guy we delist was emergency in a semi final just a week ago. Laughable club.
Says more about Nicks than our list management.

Correct, and apparently Smith still hasn't decided on his future yet. How is it even his option? He should be an easy delist.

'Winning' clubs like Hawthorn can tell Premiership Captains (Hodge) and champions of the club (Mitchell) that it's time to move on, but our club can't make a decision on a past-it HBF when it's time.

Our club is famous for having senior players hang on way past their prime as a 'break glass in case of an emergency' listed player. Which on the surface isnt a bad thing until as per usual these players end up being part of regular selection.
