Ladder after Round 17
x - clinched finals berth
SFA Headlines:
Round 17 saw some siginificant games with some interesting movements in the ladder. Southern Dragons remain top of the ladder despite losing to Baghdad at Dragon Island. The loss proved costly for the Dragons as the rest of the competition gained one spot on the top placed side. They may not have the minor presmiership just yet and will need to win at least two games to get a bye in the first week of the finals.
West Coast Wonders finally broke their drought, winning a tight game against Mount Buller Demons. The win keeps the Wonders in second and they gain some ground against the top placed Dragons after the Dragons lost to the Bombers. The Furies are in much the same position and still sit third after easily defeating the Gumbies. Geelong and the Furies tussled for most of the first half but the boys from Punt Road showed why they are third, pulling away from the Gumby side in the second half to record a pretty comfortable win.
East Side remain fourth but they are proving to be a real threat now after another win, this time over the Mod Squad. East Side were fairly inaccurate, kicking 11.20 but they did more than enough to overcome the Mod Squad who are in a real trouble now. East Side now have the best percentage in the league and if it weren't for a four point penalty early in the season, they would actually be second on percentage and a real chance to take first place come season's end.
Baghdad move into the five after a shock win over the Southern Dragons at Dragon Island. The Bombers trailed early in the last quarter but had a fantastic final term to overrun the Dragons and post an important win. That win moves them into the five and they are a big, big chance to play finals now.
The Mod Squad drop to sixth and the wheels have well and truly fallen off the Mod Squad wagon. They are really, really struggling after another loss, this time to the Hawks. They were lucky they didn't lose by more as the Hawks wasted many chances up forward and the final margin flattered the blue and green men. They seem to be stumbling towards the end of the season and at the moment, regaining their place in the five looks a long way off.
Geelong Gumbies are seventh but they are a game and percentage outside the five now. The loss to the Furies has hurt their chances of making finals but they are still a chance to make it with four games to play. However, they need to win probably three of their last four games to get there and that may not even be enough with East Side and Baghdad boasting long winning streaks.
Mount Buller remain last and are now a firm favourite for the wooden spoon. Their defence continues to function poorly with the Demons conceding an average of 107.82 points per game, a figure which is far, far too many too be thinking about winning games regularly. Not much to be gained by the Dees' for the rest of the year but their first goal would be to start winning a few games and finish the year on a high. From there they can start planning for season 09/10.
Round 18
West Coast Wonders v Mod Squad
Wonders out to win two in a row and keep their chances of winning the minor premiership alive. Mod Squad to try and keep their finals chances in tact and end a horror run of form by getting a win.
East Side Hawks v Fighting Furies
Match of the Round by a mile. The battle for third at Waverly, East Side will be aiming to take third spot on the ladder while the Furies must win to remain a threat to the Wonders and Dragons in the battle for top spot.
Geelong Gumbies v Southern Dragons
Geelong must win too stay in touch with a top five. A loss could prove almost fatal for their season here. Southern Dragons must shake off the loss to the Bombers and win here to firm their hold on first place.
Mount Buller Demons v Baghdad Bombers
Baghdad would fancy themselves against the lowly Demons and a win would really help their finals aspirations. Meanwhile, the Demons' endeavours to get off the bottom start here and they must beat the Bombers in order to gain ground on the seventh placed Gumbies.
