Media Predictions from Crystal Ball: Our predictions for the 2022 AFL season are in

Highest we were rated was 4th to bottom by 2 people, rest ranked us lower. If we finish 5th to bottom or higher that will mean every media person in this sample ranked us lower than where we finished up. In a sensible world, an accurate media should be distributed around our likely finishing position, a few above, a few below. In this case we need to finish second or third to bottom for that to be the case. I find that really, really, hard to believe. If we don't then we can pretty much see there is a systematic under-rating of us by the media, perhaps even a bias against us!??

If anyone else finds any other media ladder predictions, chuck them in can ya, I'd like a bigger sample.

I might just rant on a bit more, I am staggered at this rating of us. Look at the positives for us, we only lost 1 player who contributed in any decent way last year and that's Lynch. We're a young side but we've already bottomed out in terms of experience, it only goes up from here for us. We finished 5th from bottom with our super inexperienced side last year, the only way we don't improve on that is with mega injuries. We've now got our coaches plan getting soundly bedded in in its 3rd year. We've got one of the best fitness guys in the comp working with us. We've got two good high draft picks in the team now. Weve essentially gained two all Australians (Crouch and Dawson) and added another mature player in Milera to an inexperienced squad. We've got some exciting prospects in the twos like Gollant, Cook and Soligo knocking on the door, hardly had that at all last year. Unlike last year, we now have a viable second ruck option and can rest ROB if he gets sore and his performance drops away which has been an achilles heel for us. Anyway, I look forward to a lot of media salt and surprise if we sit just in touch with the logjam of teams vying for 8th this year, which I think its possible for us to do.

Lots of predictions coming in with us finishing bottom now.

Still working out how there's gonna be a 4 game swing between us and North Melbourne and I think a few are overestimating what Sam Mitchell will be able to accomplish in his first year.
These predictions hold no more weight than the predictions of anyone on here, well maybe not everyone’s, Mego Reds is out there.

Not sure why anyone would give a toss about journos or media commentators predictions, we bag what they write most the time and then give a **** about their predictions or top 50 players. It’s bizarre.

Yeah. Noone should take this seriously until they thoroughly analyze their previous year's predictions at the same time. ;)

Agreed. This prediction competition is for this forum.

The simple analysis would say that the modern game is won and lost in the midfield. Rate every teams midfield group and by any measure we have a bottom 4 group. More likely bottom 2. Ergo a bottom 4 finish seems more likely than not.

Love some of these "fearless" predictions in the press.

Top 4 of Melbourne, Bulldogs, Port and Brisbane.

Spoon between North and Adelaide.

Glad I took the time to read the opinion of someone that looked at last year's ladder and went "yeah, that".

The press survey on the AFL site went fairly heavily for Hawthorn as spooners.

There seems a clear top 3

Bris
Melb
WB

Then there's a bunch of top 8 potentials such as Port, Ess, Syd, GWS, Geel and Rich. I reckon Ess are really on the up. I have one too many so one has to slide. I'm going to go Rich, since their kids have to carry more burden and I don't thik they're ready.

Ess
Syd
Port
GWS
Geel

Rich

Then there's the rest of the top 8 contention list. Do I put the crows in here? If we listen to the club I should. I think Hawks and Kangas are clear bottom 2. I dont rate Saints. I don't really rate Carlton. How high should I put a Kingless GC? Freo, Coll, WC, Crows are the choices I guess.

Freo
WC
Crows
Coll

Carl
GC
Saints
Hawks
North

Isn't prediction just that, not trying to be different just because.

We are the youngest side in both games played and age. We have finished bottom 4 the last two years.

There is zero bias. We are the easy selection to finish bottom. Whether it turns out to be correct is irrelevant.

You may as well say the Melbourne Media are biased picking Melbourne to be in the top 4 this year.

My logic is already in the post. We've lost 1 substantive player from last year. We finished 5th from bottom last year. Why would we go backwards (all other things being equal - as in similar injury run etc - and also without Matt Crouch, Milera and Dawson)? Shouldn't we be about the same. We're more experienced this year than last.

Anyway, the reason I put this stuff in here is to check it later. That's the good thing about testing your skill. By the end of the season we'll get a better picture of how skilled these media ppl are.

Ha. It ain't skill. You think the media really care about this shit? They would spend no more than 5 minutes filling out the info required for this puff piece.

You can make a valid argument why would would finish bottom. You can make a valid argument why we won't finish bottom.

To think the media have an axe to grind by suggesting we finish last is laughable at best.

They should have skill. I've long suspected they don't. This year I'm going to collect some data to find out for myself. Pretty sure I'll prove that they don't.

I think what's laughable is your understanding of the concept of bias. Pretty sure you don't get it, at least not the concept of statistical bias.

Feeling more and more like we will finish bottom- we arent winning a game before the mid season break…and even if we get Pick 1 Hamish will blow it on a speculative pick from
Tasmania….
