Ok, I'm moving into a new house at the beginning of January, and I have to buy some new whitegoods (ie. fridge, washing machine and microwave).

Can anyone tell me where to go to find some bargains? I don't want 2nd hand stuff, but "scratch & dent" is ok. I know of Retravision, The Good Guys, Myer Goodbuy Warehouse/Megamart, Clive Peeters, etc. but someone has told me they've heard of other discounting places, but don't know where.

We have a place up here called 'Beep World' - it is a specialist scratch and dent, end of model runout warehouse. Usually a couple of hundred off the original price. If you have them down there, they are worth a go.

I don't know if Australia or the particular place where you live operates much like Jackson County, Missouri - USA, but here's what I do.

Go to the County Records Branch and see who has filed for divorce. Find out where they live and stop by. Tell whoever answers the door that you heard there was a sale on. During a separation, you can always find someone who wants to sell something dear to the heart of their spouse. And they'll do it cheap.

That's how I got my brand new double wide fridge with ice and water in the door for $50.00. Of course, it is also how I lost my double fridge and all my books! :D Fair is fair. ;)

When I worked a lot of street time on the ambulance or fire truck, I noticed quite a bit of cool stuff in the homes of the dead. I just knew that the new widow had no idea of the value of her recently deceased husbands guitar. I have been tempted to come back during the estate auction, offer condolences, and bid $100.00 for the nice Fender Stratocaster. I've never done that. Somehow that always struck me as unethical and unprofessional. Oh well. Hope that helps. Peace

OK, Kristin5!

I'm terribly sorry! Just like I said in my post, that's how I lost my old stuff and got the new! LOL

Sounds like your ex and mine are two peas in a pod.

Do you think it is really all the same stuff just making the rounds? :D

Peace - Mooster

You've just given me an idea - I think someone should open a shop, selling goods gained solely from people separating/divorcing. You'd make a killing! Buy it for next to nothing, sell it at double the price...

It's like real estate - they say that over half of the property market consists of people looking due to separation/divorce. Sad state of affairs, really.

Kristin,

I bought a washing machine from Good Guys at Northland, and the salesman was none other than former St Kilda Best and Fairest, Jeff Sarau!

It was pretty cheap but the real thrill came from seeing an ex-champ load a washing machine into the back of my car.

I've heard of footballers being car salesmen, and even selling real estate, but whitegoods? That's a first! (I guess they still have to earn a living, especially when they could never break into the media :D)

I've actually been to the Northland Good Guys place, to price all the stuff I need, but I can't say I saw Jeff Sarau there, although every other man and his dog came up and offered assistance!!!

Nah, Clive Peters or the Good Guys are usually the cheapest, and they give pretty good discounts if you pay cash.
