I learnt Japanese in school for a few years and all I can remember is how to count to ten and a few other phrases.
A mate of mine from school spent a year or so in Japan and came back almost fluent in Japanese.
You need to speak quickly is the lesson I learned, better to speak Japanese badly and quickly than to speak it well and slowly.
