Because generally when something doesn't work, you replace it.

Just like the flowers I bought my wife for her birthday, some things don't need replacing though. They were pretty, they died, they ended up in the bin. The vase that held them is back in the cupboard and life goes on.

If that's the angle, fine. But if you take a player off the list, you still need a replacement player.

We don't need a like for like replacement for MJ though. We have enough jack of all trades, master of none utility players as it is.

This. Of the McPhee, Bradley and Johnson group, we only really [strike]need[/strike] should have one.

However, in some ways he is more valuable than others. Better decision maker and ball user than McPhee and Bradley. McPhee has hardness at the contest to a greater extent than the other two. Bradley is more capable of holding down a key position (though not brilliant at it).

So even in that utility group we have that is clearly not great at anything, there is no clear 'best' player of them.

Agreed. The key for me is simply that McPhee and Bradley have contracts, whereas Johnson does not. He's better at some things, than some of our other fringe players, oh and he's tall, so lets sign him up ASAP!...Really?

Where does Johnson play his best footy? Half-forward*

Do we need to sign up another half-forward? No

As a club we need to stop giving players games/contracts based on what they can do and start giving them games/contracts based on what they are doing. Look, certain players will always get the benefit of the doubt for poor form - Pavlich and Sandilands immediately spring to mind - Michael Johnson is not one of those players.

I know this is somewhat redundant as he's going to get a new deal, but if Fremantle de-listed him and/or traded him they would never regret it. Never.

*I'm ignoring the loose man in defense option, as that position simply kills the team against good sides.

He's getting into his late 20s. 'Could' is turning into a 'will never'. His best season was five years ago, and by a fair margin. Looking exceedingly unlikely he will be anything except a talented B grader who goes missing most games.

Yea, I unfortunately agree. Really if he's not hitting his straps now, I can't see him ever doing it.

He's also entered the trade bait category too - sometimes a talented but under-performing player like MJ can look attractive to another team, but I'm fairly sure MJ's made it clear he doesn't want to go anywhere. So we're stuck with him.

There's a good number of years left in him, maybe he can pull the finger out, put it away, whatever, and realise his potential a bit more ... here's hoping anyway. :o

Pretty disgusting though that a player like him (or any player) is able to dictate to the club on what he can and can't do. Who the **** does he think he is

Someone whos had it far too easy in his whole career an doesnt want to risk a change as he may have to pull his head in.

He knows everyone rates what he CAN do an feels safe that he will never be dropped or traded/delisted.

What the hell are you talking about, we don't have to sign him if we don't want to - just saying that, according to Harves, in recent negotiations he/his management have said he's keen to stay at Freo. That's his and every other players right to say and frankly pretty normal. He may have had a bellow par season or four or five, but he's not dictating anything.

The hate has got to relax with this guy.

Somebody please tell me we're not using Johnno as one of our poster boys.

Is that an actual piece of official merch Reg? One of the most poorly designed pieces of shit I've ever seen

Yes, official merchandise. It is the weekly web special. Down to $15.00 from $24.95.

To be fair, Silvagni has a bigger arse. Johnson's extra weight is around his middle. :p

Definitely not good enough though, and needs to work hard in the preseason. Hopefully won't be slotting in to the starting line up so easily next year.

So let me guess People have a dislike of Michael Johnson because hes fat and Lazy eh?

If my mind serves me correctly I dont know who said this, it Must of been chops is a must or another freo fan on here had a suggestion of body fat % on here.

Wasnt there a slogan called "keep it under 8% or GTFO" as a tagline in 2008 or 2009?

I tell you what it Seems Michael Johnson has More than 8% body fat on his body. I might be a bit harsh. I reckon its time to bring that slogan back.

Either Do that or give him the Lex Luger Treatment. Spend the whole off season pumping weights... And If you dont know who Lex Luger is... Well Im sure there are a few Professional wrestling fans out here.

Take my word for it Lex Luger in his Prime definately had less than 8% body fat!;):thumbsu:

Lex Luger would have also been on more juice than a 90's eagles player.

Meh, if MJ makes the switch from blow to juice at least we'll get some benefit out of it. Given the club is the one paying for his drug use, the least he could do is show a little less selfishness and reward them for the financial outlay.

FFS, this shit is getting out of hand. It's like listening to a bunch of ****** politicians bat on about broadband by talking about nothing but speed, as if that is anywhere close to the real root cause of the issue.

Guys, can we agree that we're a Football Club and not a ****ing Weight Watchers?

**** Body Fat. Let's get our priorities straight shall we?

How's this for a tagline for 2012;

Repeat After Me.... 'Disposal Inefficiency < 8% or GTFO'.

I'm not saying we don't have to worry about match conditioning. I am suggesting we're all putting a bit too much emphasis on it compared with demonstrable deficiencies in how we make decisions and dispose of the footy... areas of the game which are not exactly what you'd call marginal. You could put a team of 22 cyclists on the field at Subiaco with less than 8% body fat and watch them get creamed by Peel's Reserves. Less than 8% body fat won't in isolation win you football matches. Good disposal and decision making might, on the other hand, just do the trick.

How about as a club we learn how to clean up our decision making under pressure and learn to dispose of the ****ing football properly? I can't be the only supporter on this board that thinks this is important?? And yet we're crapping on and on about Body Fat? When our kids surprised the living shit out of everyone last year at the beginning of the season, it wasn't because they were finely conditioned examples of the human form. It was because our play was quick, the decision making was improved, and the disposal, whilst haphazard, set up plenty of running, open and penetrating passages of play that were coupled with hard (and in our first couple of games, unrelenting) pressure.

Body Fat < 8% is a worthy goal. But I'd be happier if we made fewer sub forums and list management threads with that byline and instead concentrated a bit more on what we do to get the football and what we do with it when get our hands on the bastard.

Just a thought... :p
