Swingers with (a hot, thin) Vince Vaughn.

ALSO, I FINALLY made Stripey watched Ferris Beullers Day Off, and after all the kicking, screaming, crying and tantrum throwing bullshit he made for not watching it, he actually enjoyed it. Nub.

Next on the agenda is Breakfast Club. :D:thumbsu:

Magnolia

Wow, just wow.
One of the longest films i've seen (clocking in at just over 3 hours) but so incredibly elaborate and beautiful.
As with all Paul Thomas Anderson films not a single shot is wasted with so much depth, detail and thought going into every frame throughout so i'm sure even on my third or fourth viewing i'll be finding new aspects and angles.
It was quite 'artsy' and pompous, but you expect that from PTA films.

The cast is also pretty amazing, with wonderful performances from Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Tom Cruise (yes, Tom Cruise), John C Reilly, Jason Robards, William H. Macy and Phillip Baker Hall.
The ending was a little bit of a letdown because it left so much open, so much for you to draw your own conclusions about, but i expected that being a Paul Thomas Anderson film.

Good film, no doubt. But let's not get carried away with PTA. He's only made 2 films worth watching (Magnolia & There Will Be Blood). The others are stinkers!!

I can still vividly remember the stench from the cinema when watching Boogie Nights and Punch-Drunk Love.

I said his films have many layers with an amazing amount of detail shown throughout which is pretty hard to argue with if you've seen some of his work.

You may or may not rate him as a filmmaker (i have a love-hate relationship with him) but his attention to detail can't be questioned.

Boogie Nights was a great film, PDL was incredibly self-indulgent and pompous, something that PTA is prone to adding to his films, sadly.

We'll have to agree to disagree on Boogie Nights.;)

....But I do agree with the love-hate thing.

He's just outrageously inconsistent for mine.

There Will Be Blood  (I haven't seen it  but I heard it was MEGA boring)

"Southland Tales" for the second time...and I still haven't completely nutted it out yet but still enjoyed it.

Really want to see 'The Box' by Richard Kelly as well.

"The Boys Are Back" (Advanced screenings at the cinema)

Chose this mainly cause there was nothing else on.. an Aussie movie with Clive Owen in the lead as a sports writer whos wife dies suddenly from cancer and is left to raise his two children alone. Was okay, wouldnt rave about it, but still quite funny and touching at times. Ending was a bit disappointing.

Bloody spectacular scenery shots of South Australia though.

"The Box" with James Masden and Cameron Diaz.

The best part of this movie were the maltesers I purchased from the Candy Bar. Second the frozen coke... then the popcorn.
That sort of review does not inspire me Shell, especially for a film I'm keen on - was it really that bad??

Oh, and last movie?? Yesterday's return to 'Big Trouble in Little China' with Kurt Russell. Just a classic romp from the 80s. "It's all in the reflexes"

Yes. But who knows you may like it! But yeah, I watched it on one of those 35 degree days, escaping the heat. Probably wasnt in the mood for that "type" of movie. I enjoyed the first half of it, then it was all downhill from there, imo. "Weird" is one word I would use to describe this movie.

Anywaaaay... one movie I'm looking forward to seeing (like yourself with The Box), is "Paranormal Activity". I saw an ad for it when i was at the movies for The Box.. while i think they were a little OTT with the actual ad (less is more when it comes to ads for these types of movies).. it does look really freaky. It got me thinking about The Blair Witch Project- Phil hasnt seen it before, so we're gonna rent it soon. I ****ing loved TBWP.. Paraormal looks like the same kind of film, so I cant wait to see it.. :thumbsu:

I read something about this a few months back - I think in the US they have some sort of demand poll or something completely American where people can vote what movie that want released in their area - go with me on this one - anyway, this flick did really well on the word-of-mouth and did pretty well on a tiny budget, very much like Blair Witch. People claim it is pretty scary but proof would be in the viewing.

Beyond Borders. It was on TV last night and it was ****ing TERRIBLE. Jolie wants to play the 'save the african children' card so badly she did a really shithouse movie about doing exactly that. Plus, she made herself look ugly.

Paranormal Activity is just too creepy. Any noise in the night after seeing this movie will get your heart racing

I seen 2012 yesterday and I enjoyed it. As a bit of escapism it works well.

Thats nothing.. I suggested to Stripey we watch The Blair Witch Project (he hasnt seen it) in the bush when we go camping (like on our laptops)- how ****ing scary would that be.

I doubt I would actually go thru with it tho. :D

The word of mouth on Blair Witch was amazing. Iirc they made over $12,000 for every dollar they spent on the actual movie. Anyway, when I was working at Hoyts we had these "dodgy" advanced screenings for staff and family and friends of staff only. (the $4 we paid went straight to the xmas party fund ;))... anyhoo the lines for TBW advanced screenings were out the door. The managers had to show it like in 3 or 4 cinemas.

If you liked Blair Witch then hunt down a Spanish movie called '[Rec]' (which happens to be the last movie I watched). It riffs off Blair Witch and 'The Last Broadcast' and, to a lesser degree, 'Cloverfield' in that it utilises hand held, p.o.v

It was remade less than a year later by Hollywood as 'Quarantine'.
