Last night proved that we don't need the Grand Final at the MCG anymore.

MCG is shithouse for the entertainment element, pre game and half time stuff. At the ground and on tv the sound is rubbish and the stadium is too big for it. Last night was way better. The tv ratings is interesting, was it the time slot or was it due to Covid factors of less people at pubs, live sites, gatherings.
The entertainment is the game. Who gives a crap about the rest. Have you been to the G with 100k?

1- Would still sell the game out no matter if there is "entertainment" supplied or not? A- 100% yes.
2- How many people would not watch the TV coverage if there was no "entertainment"? A- Nearly zero IMO.

Also the 30 minute half time break is an abomination.

OP is correct. Grand Final must be shared around the country. Should be allocated to each State on the ratio of teams they have in the competition - i.e. Victorian hosts 10/18 years, QLD/NSW/SA/WA hosts it 2 in every 18 years, respectively. This is the only fair outcome, it's a great outcome for the growth of the game, and each city will bring its own uniqueness to the day.

The best thing about this GF was so many fewer corporates going because of covid so there was actually a decent amount of real fans there. Everyone who went seems to agree the atmosphere was awesome. Piss off the corporates and have as many long term fans as possible on the big day.

I think shifting the GF around would be good. MCG every 2nd year, Adelaide and Perth every 6th year and Sydney and Brisbane every 12 years. But no night GF. The wait was terrible. 3pm works well I think.

It was still a spectacle despite a reduced crowd and non-traditional state (most of the credit must go to the teams, to be fair, good quality game). It would be a spectacle anywhere, the MCG simply offers a little larger crowd. The difference isn’t worth locking out every other state.

The MCG is not the spiritual place some people make it out to be.

Enough of the 100k people crap. Its meaningless.move the GF around and share the love across the whole country, not just one pocket.
If every state had a world class stadium I wouldn’t have a problem with it but Perth stadium is the only other ground large enough and with good enough facilities to make it work its no coincidence the two worst grand finals for atmosphere have been the Gabba and Waverley park

Incorrect, the very first game of footy was held in the precinct ( Yarra park ) & it has been hosting matches since the VFL’s very first year.... It is without doubt the spiritual home of AFL.

No part of the MCG is older than 30 years. This isn't Lords or Wimbledon (renovated to put on roof but shell remained).

Playing surface and soil completely ripped up and replaced.

No reason for this fascination over a stadium that's less than 30 years old.

Perth and Adelaide are football cities. So what's the argument for not having the event there?
Perth is too isolated, it would only work if you don’t want competing club members to get their share of tickets.
Brisbane only worked this year because what 95% of competing club members were unable to attend due to Covid.

The likelihood of doing a rotating GF is that two competing clubs will be from east coast, no point having a Sydney v Melbourne GF with the 40k club members who would be able to get to the G be unable to get to Perth.

Every cell in your body dies and is replaced every 20 years (most parts far less).

Yet the vast majority of people consider themselves to be the same person they were 20 years ago. Changed to be sure, improved hopefully, but still the same person.

Well lucky for us that football is the main purpose of a grand final.

Despite being a Queenslander, I'll admit that the Gabba is probably considered 4th tier in terms of AFL stadiums, yet it was able to host a Grand Final that drew huge ratings and the game's quality wasn't effected at all. There's also the narrative of what a novelty grand final will bring to the state and how it could be perceived as "New". Whether you agree with it or not, every Grand Final at the MCG feels the same. The same tune is repeated year in, year out, the same commentators, the same production, etc. Can you imagine the event of a Grand Final in Perth? Or Adelaide? Or Sydney? You would get something different each year instead of tredding the predictable nature of showing the game at the G. Now, that's not to say that the MCG should host the grand final, however, why not share the event around? I know I would rather watch a grand final in Perth than at the G after seeing that it can work.
Exactly the opposite of everything you have said. Saturday night proved why we need the grand final at the MCG during the afternoon more than anything. This season also proved that the best teams win regardless of where the grand final is played.

the horror that you might have to deal with what we have to deal with is real and tangible and ignores the fact that there are plenty of wa based supporters of clubs that can attend.

I think it showed that a rotating GF wouldn't have been the end of the world like Victorians shout every time someone suggests it. Could easily make it every other year that it rotates between Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Sydney. So you'd have something like:

2021 - MCG
2022 - Adelaide Oval
2023 - MCG
2024 - Optus Stadium
2025 - MCG
2026 - SCG
2027 - Gabba

And so on. That way you're still recognising and understanding the particular place that the MCG has in the AFL but also seeing that it's no longer a Victorian competition and spreading it around the country.

Of course it's a pointless discussion because the AFL somehow signed a 10,000 year contract.
