The kid is looking out for his own interests, nothing wrong with that. If he is asking for too much money, MFC can always simply say "no." If he wants big money, he better be prepared on signing a long term (4+ years) contract.

As I understand, he only really has 3 choices:
- Sign with MFC
- Sign with GWS
- Nominate for the draft, with a 99% chance of ending up at GWS anyway

You need to look at it from his perspective, he will be sacrificing hundreds of thousands of dollars if he stays at MFC. It's a tough decision for anyone to make. And from what I have read, he does not have the brains to forge a successful career outside of football. You can't blame a guy for thinking about their eventual retirement and what kind of lifestyle they want for themselves in the future.

With GWS having a 2 year signing period, if Scully goes does that mean another MFC player can join him the year after?

@ The Boss.

I still think GWS can only take 1 player per club unless the club gives their blessing ala Lions.

Agreed- though I think Scully is slightly more intelligent than you make him seem re 'doesn't have the brains to forge career outside football' :D

Also I don't think that Scully thinks about this as much as we do. There is a big chance he has accepted his managements advice to look at all options at the end of the season (even if he only wants to stay at the Dees), and hasn't given it another thought (or very little thought).

Also;

Spotted this in the HUN today;

GIANT FEV RUMOUR

If the rumours are true, Brendan Fevola is warming up in the VFL this year before finishing his career at Greater Western Sydney.
Track watchers spotted a GWS recruiter at Casey Fields as Fevola kicked five goals on the weekend.
Quickly, two and two became four million.
But if Fevola is to find a home in AFL again next year, it will not be north of the border in Western Sydney.
As someone close to the football department at GWS said yesterday, "I wouldn't think he has got any hope whatsover with us''.
Fevola's five-goal haul included three in quick time, and while he might not find a home at GWS, at least his progress is encouraging.
His best avenue to a return is to keep his head down, stay away from the media interviews and controversy, and just keep doing the team thing.
Everyone knows he can kick goals by the bucketful, but it is his conditioning and professionalism that will dictate whether he can resuscitate his career.

The article is about Mark Blake seeking a trade (dear God no Harrington- don't even consider it), but I find it interesting that a GWS scout was at the Casey game. No doubt they are just doing their due diligance and seeing as much football as possible, but I seriously doubt they were looking at Fev in any way, especially when you take the other comment onboard about 'there being no hope whatsoever' from an insider there.

So I ask- was there someone else they were watching in particular? A Casey player such as Wall or Stockdale? A player from our opponents team? OR were they looking at another Melbourne listed player? If so, is this a sign that they think they won't get Scully?

Obviously you can put 2 and 2 together for 10 here quite easily, but it's still food for thought :p

Surely they are having a look at Fev. Imagine if he was playing good footy at GC at the moment, they'd be a far better side.
GWS might consider him on a one year contract initially, so they have a solid target up front and cause some headache for opposition defenders.

But on the flipside is the off-field question mark. and it's a big, ugly one. risk vs gain

Cale Morton to GWS?

Doesn't specifically say it here and is an absolute puff piece, but maybe there's something to it?

Rivals target out of favour Dee Morton

MELBOURNE midfielder Cale Morton is languishing in the reserves as suitors circle.

Morton has suffered a stunning fall from grace, again struggling for Casey Scorpions on the weekend.

The 21-year-old is out of contract at season's end, with several clubs monitoring his situation

How many second year players over the years have done what he is doing? The only person I can think of is Des Headland but he wanted to go back home so it's different. Look at Dustin Martin, he signed straight away last year when the rumors started happening with GWS, that says a lot about the guy who could have got heaps more cash but clearly thats not his motivations right now. He wants to be in a successful team and that is how you win respect.

How many 2nd year players have been in his position? None, or maybe a few last year like Hurley, who didn't sign until May last year.

I can appreciate your sentiments, but this is a totally different ball game that bares no comparison to previous situations because of the expansion teams. You asked what 2nd year player thinks they're worth $500k, none do. I'm sure he doesn't think he's worth that much, but there's an offer there for that much so he can potentially get that, not that he's worth it. Worth & what you're offered can be very different, both way over & under at times.

Agree with a lot of the rest of what you said, especially the club followed as a kid thing. Every single AFL player says that they don't care who drafts them, they just want to play footy. Some still hold a little nostalgic inkling like Beamer, but I don't think he'd play any different if it was another club that got him from Geelong, Melbourne was a preference but I'm sure he wouldn't have refused another club if Melbourne weren't interested.

Indeed, what a nothing article, Jon Ralph at his best spreading completely unsubstantiated rumours.

Having said that, Carlton, we'll take your first round pick again if you're keen.

Not sure Cale is ever going to find the mongrel required at AFL standard, soft as.

Thanks nickgrant69.

The way I see it is that Scully will be very well off by the end of his career whether he stays at Melbourne or not so I can't understand why he would go. Sure it's a few 100k but he'll be rich regardless and I'm sure he is smart enough or has people around his who are and will nvest his cash etc so once his career is over he won't have to do too much in regards to working.

It's different if it were one of use who was offered an extre 100k a year coz it will make a massive difference in our lives correct? The average Australian makes around 60k a year (not including tax) s if someone came to me and said 'I'll give you 120k a year if u leave your job' I would take it and run. But an average footballer (a good one) would get around 400-500k a year which is more then enough and is well off already. Do you get what I'm saying? I hope i'm making sense???? lol

Ive been in Tom's corner all the way through, Id of thought that he'd of
signed up by now.

With this so called agreement that Scully is holding out on, Id bet that
our club would be willing to put a clause in his contract to more extra
dollars pending the TV rights - and Im sure many scenarios wouldve
already been put to Tom's management.

I think Scully will sign on, its a dilemma thats died down since the kid has
been injured - which is the only positive to take out of such an injury.

More likely the GWS recruiters at the Casey game were there to watch players on your list and Fev was just the sideshow. Interesting that Mitch Morton is also back in the reserves at Coburg and is also out of contract at the end of the year. Both of them are just as lazy at VFL level so hopefully the recruiters got a good eyeful and move on.

So Pendles has re-signed for one year. How would you feel if Scully re-signed for one year only? Very different situations but interesting nonetheless.

Personally I wouldn't like it one bit if Scully did that, and I think when he re-signs it'll be long term whoever he chooses.

Personally I don't like it, not sure how the Pies supporters have taken it but to me it seems like he’s keeping a foot in both camps, so if they Pies don’t build a dynasty like he hopes & they look to be heading down hill late next year he can take the cash from GWS.

For me I would like all or nothing, not draging this out for another 12 months.

@d33my- Yeah I beleive so. As I said very different to the Scully situation. A big part of it is the fact that GWS can sign uncontracted players for 2 years...

CA completely agree- if I were a Pies fan (shudder) I would hate it. But I'd take solace in the fact that even if he did leave at the end of 2012 there's a big chance it'll be on the back of 3 premierships (shudder again).

Is it possible that Tom has already signed but there will be no announcement until after the season is finished?

Signed for Melbourne with no annoucement? I doubt it. The football department will call an immediate ticker tape parade if he re-signs with us!

For GWS? Maybe. But that'd mean he lied directly to Jim Stynes which would bring an amazingly large amount of bad karma...

I meant with us. Maybe there could be a second parade before the Grand Final for that. Unless we are in it of course.:)

If Scully goes after lying to Jim, I'd hope that the players give him and that team of mercanaries and stolen youth an absolute beating infront of 50k at the G.

He better stay, you don't lie to Jim, Tom. You better not have signed anything, or indeed have been approached.

I've lost a massive amount of respect for Tom Scully, stay or leave im with DTE here. People say he's just listening to his management but he's 20 years old and has eyes and ears. He should know that pressure is mounting and that he's ****ing us around here.
