I dont think the club needs to rookie Laycock...

I would rather us keep room on the rookie list for younger/less injury prone players.

TB is coming along nicely and after a few pre-seasons and gym work under his belt so will young Bocky!

If we lose Laycock, we can't lose Bock.

If we do, we'll need to have another genuine option as a back-up Ruck, as Hille has maybe 3 years left, and we've shown a habit of being short of ruckmen.

Perhaps there's a few handy mature-aged options running around in the WAFL?

The medical expenses for Laycock over the years have gone from variable to fixed, the bean counters will be grinning along with all the knockers.

Do they end with the contract though? or does the club pay until injuries that happened under contract are fully rehabilitated? I imagine as his employer and the fact it is a workplace injury they have some long term obligations.

One that springs to mind, though in the SANFL and not the WAFL, is Jonathan Giles from Sturt.

He was in the system at Port for some time behind Lade and Brogan so barely got a run, and was actually 2nd option at Centrals behind Buckets MacKenzie (a massive man who was made for SANFL footy i.e. not athletic enoguh for AFL but perfect for SANFL). Giles has gone to Sturt this season and has had a ripper season as their first ruck.

I guess the issue will be to convince any ruckman coming to the Dons that you're essentially a Bendigo ruckman and start as 4th in the pecking order and have to prove yourself to get above Belly and into the seniors.

Surely any mature age state level player would jump at the chance to be put on an AFL (or rookie) list, and would expect nothing other than to start at the bottom of the pecking order?

I think it'd depend on whether or not he can get another gig.
If someone else (even VFL/WAFL) lists him, they take him on with all his costs.

I think big Courtney "C-Money" "the J train" "messiah" "more nick-names than senior games" Johns still occasionally has check-ups with our docs. Imagine it'd be a similar scenario.

There is a mob called JLT Sport that looks after the AFL's insurance. You need to look at what would be stopping him geeting a gig at that level, or even in footy full stop. If injuries sustained at EFC are stoping him, he may have a case for work cover loss of income and costs paid by the insurer. He could even go the whole hog- "lump sum" Laycock.
